Cosmic Exploration sucked and flopped instantly - dead instances in less than a week.
Occult Crescent sucked and died in about three weeks. Very few people entering instances now unless they're doing FT runs. Compared to Eureka or Bozja it's a complete failure.

FFXIV Dawntrail ruined the reputation of the community for being the friendliest online and for being a good fun game.
10 years of good will spunked away because certain people didn't want to end the game at 6.0 and were out of ideas, so they put in place an amateur writer (Hiroi) who shouldn't have been given any responsibility higher than side quests, wrote the worst story in FFXIV expansion history and had people who should have known better (Ishikawa, YoshiP) sign off on it.
Wuk Lamat was the icing on top of the shit pile of how cursed this expansion has been.
On the Content end Occult Crescent was meant to be the saving grace, it was meant to save the content of the expansion, but it came out broken and a mess something that people did not have the patience for any longer.

By 8.0 actually being good and fixing the primary complaints people have with combat and content cycles. Will this happen? Probably not, but if the MSQ is actually "good" again (and I have to put good in quotes because I'm saying "good" within the context of what FFXIV players consider a good story) and content updates are consistent that will probably be enough to bring a lot of people back.

As for Dawntrail, I don't think you're going to see any sort of recovery for the remainder of its lifecycle. Raiding autists will come back at 7.4 when the new ultimate drops but I think things are going to stay pretty dead throughout the remainder of 7.2 and 7.3.
