In the game, there are fossils of 8-Bit DK and Pauline's collectible items from the Arcade game. The DK one mentions him being a 'certain Kong in the prime of his youth', that 'his barrel throwing skills were passed down by his descendants' and the items are mentioned to 'be left behind by a certain lady'. It’s a little harder than Odyssey but it’s still pretty easy. The health system is a bit different in this game compared to Odyssey and it’s a bit easier to get hit, and you’ll take more damage the deeper you go. You get tons of balloons so falling doesn’t matter much at all. But yeah, if Odyssey was easy, I’d say this game is pretty easy. The balancing is more linear though, because before post-game, Odyssey didn’t really get harder as it progressed while it does here.

the bongos just send all their inputs as certain direction or button presses that a normal controller uses, so they already work with the gamecube controller adapter. it's not like the GBA cable that used serial mode.

I gotten used to Pauline's voice after hearing her talk for a while. It's not good voice acting but it's kinda charming in how cheesy it is. When the bananza meter is full DK’s fur changed to be a lighter color, this applies to all fur colors except for black. When you select the default fur color this makes his fur become bright orange. The problem is that vast majority of gameplay is spent with the bananza meter full. Call me autistic if you want but this is fucking gross. I understand that there are other fur colors to choose from but if I want donkey kong to look like donkey kong I have to use my bananza power then turn it off and then not collect any gold whatsoever. I genuinely think they should add a toggle to turn the fur brightness effect off in the setting but I doubt that’ll ever happen. You literally HAVE to play as some weird hair dyed version of donkey kong the entire game. He’s not even a little bit orange he is BRIGHT fucking orange. This isnt DK.

Don't mean to single you out here anon but it annoys me when people still refer to the mid-2000s DK renders as "Paon designs" when in reality they were really just in-house Nintendo designs that contractors like Paon, Namco and even Rare themselves were mandated to use.

Tiny Kong's one of the best examples of that, Rare clarified on their Scribes that the tall teenage design was Nintendo's call and Rare just had to roll with it. Interviews for Barrel Blast also confirm that the new Kremling characters like Kalypso were created by Nintendo's in-house character management team.

Funny enough this may also explain why Smash Brawl and Smash 4 had a couple of all new "Paon-esque" 3D models for Winky, Expresso and Squitter seen nowhere else, because they were models Nintendo themselves created in the event that a developer wanted to use them (which didn't happen it seems).

He literally steals the entire game once he shows up, he appears out of nowhere in the second last level, and then the entire final level is a massive DKC fanwank extended gauntlet with a giant K.Rool statue and a bunch of OG DKC enemies.
The boss fight is also a massive multi-phase undertaking that will probably take most people over and hour to finish, with one part of it being a big platforming section with like a billion "K.Rool is BACK" signs glowing all over the place. He's similar to Twilight Princess Ganondorf in some ways, except the level he hijacks the entire game is on a whole different level.

Japanese devs don’t understand K Rool or the kremlins at all. Possibly the dumbest way you could’ve gone about reintroducing them. I love that part about the Odyssey team. They did the same thing in SMO. When you're on ingot isle and everything crashes down then the monkeys have radios playing club style music while they're mining. It's a nice little touch. On another note, I do wish Shiggy would reign in the Odyssey team slightly. They execute a primary gameplay gimmick wonderfully but then forget to expand further on it especially with challenge (I know it's a kid's game but the kids games we played had some challenge).

You can walk past anything difficult and find an easy objective instead to progress. I'd say Bananza has a couple difficulty spikes that are more notable than Odyssey at least.
The fire ball boss and the bat boss at least felt as hard as a Galaxy Boss (which isnt to say hard, just... harder than whatever Odyssey was doing) and Void Kong and K.Rool can genuinely take a bunch of attempts to beat.
Haven't finished post game yet though, but some of the challenges there have been pretty tough in a more platformy type of way, its kinda interesting where the difficulty basically seems to directly inversely scale to how much of the terrain is breakable.

Honestly, I like that approach a lot. The game overall felt a fair bit more challenging than Odyssey and it's probably because I didn't put points into health. I prefer it that way, though. Prioritizing exploration and combat skills early on was really rewarding and fun.

This is genuinely how their big 3D platformers have always been, except Sunshine, and a lot of people didn't like how difficult that game's main path was. I'd honestly say the main path in Bananza is one of the more difficult ones. Galaxy 1 and 2 were total cakewalks and Odyssey was only a bit harder.

The postgame runs off of banana gates, as in "you need 300 bananas to do this next part, and then to do the next one you will need 350 bananas" so even if you see credits a bit early you'll still have plenty of reason to search for the bananas you miss to finish the postgame story.

??? Galaxy 1 is miles harder than Odyssey. I've played both very recently.
Galaxy 1 isn't HARD, but Odyssey is like, below kirby tier, there's essentially no platforming or any sort of obstacle at all in the entire game, it's comically easy to a fault to the point it completely stops even being engaging.

With a few exceptions, all Nintendo platformers since the SNES era have been like this. It's more annoying in 2D games where there are way fewer options to deviate from the main path but it makes a lot of sense for 3D collectathons where you have a lot more control over how you progress. There's plenty of challenge in games like Odyssey and Bananza, you just need to deviate from the main path to find it.

Outside of one or two stars in Rainbow Ride, 64 is easy, too. The only real challenge in the game comes from micromanaging the camera. Sunshine is the only truly difficult 3D Mario game and even then a lot of it is bullshit. Shit like the watermelon level and the pachinko level is just not fun.

I'm slowly making my way through as we speak. There is almost no platforming in the first three levels and the odyssey team is kind of schizo/adhd when it comes to map design. I wish they took a little more inspiration from rare AND 64 titles and blended in more platforming and challenges.
