The golden era of scalping was 2020-2021. I was able to get two PS5s on launch; sold one for $1,300 and kept the second one for free. Same with Steam Decks, I got a 512gb one on launch for $710, sold it for $1,965 on eBay and walked away with $1,092 after fees. Used that to buy a 128gb model a few months later. Nowadays you just can't get the kind of numbers to make the risk/effort worthwhile.

The problem is that supply and demand control the price of goods. Scalpers won't exist if the supply outweighed the demand or the demand was under the supply. When there is a limited amount of a highly sought after item the free market will determine the price. You might be pissed that you can't find a Switch 2 and scalpers are selling it at a $200 markup, but the alternative would be Nintendo doing it themselves. In that scenario, everyone pays more, the scalpers can't move their product, and Nintendo could markdown the console once supply outweighs demand (not that they would).

Every single morning we have a customer who is the very first person in the store. He also only leaves when the production team leaves. So that's a solid 7.5 hours that he's in the store. EVERY single day.

He spends his time harassing the production team as they bring out merchandise. He flings himself at them before they even stop in the ailse they're filling and starts rooting through merchandise like he's desperate to be the one to look at and touch every single item before it hits the shelves.

He grabs something of value and keeps it in his cart for a few hours and posts and ad for it on some site like Craigslist and puts it up for sale at a higher price than what we're offering. If it does get sold, he buys it himself. If it doesn't before the end of the day, he puts it back on the shelf. He stalks some of the employees around the store all day long and had to be told several times to stop harassing them. Everyone is uncomfortable around him but the managers are too chickenshit to tell him to leave because he is a customer and does occasionally buy things.

Or the scalper tries finding some other exploit like sharing queue codes. But if the seller doesn't care to limit sales per customer, then frankly it's easy to just wait for the countdown and add as many as you can to the cart. Still, it takes attention and time. And it's not like a "bot" can physically package the items and drive them to a mailing service. All this so you can get like $50 a box after like 10 weeks.
