These Live Letters used to be interesting, and kinda fun. Now they're just "lets go through the routine of talking a lot, saying nothing, and do our standard talking points". Its rote. You can tell not even YoshiP and whatshisname(he firmly stuck in my head with the Morbol nickname) really enjoy it anymore.

I did expert roulette twice yesterday (once before and once after reset), and the first time I got Everkeep, where I ended up with two DPS that spent more time in the floor during boss fights than off it, and where I as a healer was constantly 2nd on enmity.
Like I had to raise one of them like 6 times on the final boss fight.
And then the one after reset was Yuweyawata. To their credit, it was a group of friends and they were fun to talk to and friendly, but almost an identical situation: lots of unnecessary deaths, lots of raises, me as the healer being 2nd on the enmity list basically at all times.

I don't know why they thought they should be experimental with stuff that people really wanted and were blasted for excluding in endwalker. Why is Forked Tower not like Castrum/Dalridad/Delubrum? Why is the ranking system in Cosmic Exploration completely pointless and meaningless? Why are Chaotic Alliances Raids?

It feels like the only content they're not fucking up is 8 man raids and the game is already so raid-centric I don't see how that brings back anyone that lost interest after Endwalker

Yeah, but they should also be aware that the whole housing system is no longer working out. If they really wanted to keep it as a ball and chain (which they've been kinda failing at given the... what, 8-9 months of demolition pause for EU by the time it goes back up in 7.3), then that window is surely shattering now. It's not something they can afford to be stingy with anymore.
I absolutely see them doing something to mitigate the damage from people being disgruntled about the housing situation. But I also don't expect them to just shake their shirt sleeve and drop instanced housing on us. With that in mind, starting with apartments being adjustable in terms of size would be a good thing to tide people over.
Surely they can see how the winds are blowing.

The problem though is that outside of 24 man alliance raid and seeing how 7.3 wraps up DT's story to possibly push out Wuk and crew, there's not much really there for the casual player. 7.4 will bring new Phantom Jobs while 7.5 will bring the new zone and instances for OC along with the rest of the jobs for that content, and I capped my jobs and crafters/gatherers back when 7.0 "hype" was still fresh, so there's no real appeal for cosmic for me at this time that the market board doesn't just grant me in terms of mounts and rewards.

7.5 will usually bring BLU cap raise and possibly BST this time as well, and probably a longer downtime before the next expansion since they're not even advertising fanfests at this point in the game.

(Don't come to me about Forked Tower being the worst mistake ever when we had both Pagos and Baldesion Arsenal in the expansion that gets sucked off for its content most of all)
But at the same time, I would say a sample size of one isn't much to go on. 7.2 could be a fluke and 7.3 a return to 7.0 and 7.1. Maybe that's overly negative, but I'll believe they cleaned up the writing when I see it, and one patch of MSQ isn't enough to decide if we're back to something more worthwhile as a story.
Moreover, as a x.3 patch that is back to the old formula (not the Endwalker patch one), it would have big shoes to fill even if it wasn't already trying to drag Dawntrail's writing out of the pit it got itself in. Expansion finale patches are expected to hit it out of the park. 3.3 did that, 4.3 somewhat did that, and we all know 5.3 is considered the peak of XIV writing by many. So 7.3 has a lot of work to do, and that with considerably little time given that 7.1 was squandered on things that don't seem like they matter much.

Don't get me wrong. I don't want to doom and gloom and expect the worst, but people are gonna be rightly anxious about how 7.3 lands given the twofold strain on them to give it their best after what we got in 7.0.

People here seem to think he's shit off rip, but I don't agree. But I do think they squandered a lot of potential for him to feel more.. substantial, by not having us butt heads with Preservation in 7.1 at least. Going from no Preservation ot "and now you're meeting and fighting the leader of it directly" made it feel like it's not even a real organization. Where are the lackeys? Did Preservation get culled, or something? I thought it was a big shadow-organization pulling the strings behind the scenes by means of their fake Queen Sphene. But now it just feels Calyx making sexbots in his basement.
Well, whatever. I still think 7.3 can be good if they just keep it up the way they did in 7.2, but my point remains that we can't be certain that 7.3 will be more 7.3, or 7.2 until we see it. They've conditioned us to expect the worst for now, so we'll need to establish a pattern of good. And, as I said, there's the fact that it has a lot of weight to pull on the "x.3 MSQ" end and the "it needs to pull Dawntrail out of the mud and present a good finale" front.

Exactly. We had let's be honest 5 patches of meh (okay, maybe 4), followed by an expansion of awful, and then a patch of even MORE awful. It's gonna take 7.3 being at least as good as 7.2 if not better for people to start to have some faith again that they cleaned up their shit and 7.2 wasn't just an outlier.
It will probably take longer than that, still. But at least we can start to get a feeling of whether they took action if 7.3 was good.
I've said it before, but I'm ultimately thankful Dawntrail (7.0)'s story was so bad. I feel like if it had continued on at 6.x levels where it's neither great nor offensively bad, just "meh", the community might not have been as vocal about it, and it'd just slowly glide down the funnel into pure apathy territory. Instead, 7.0 was so bad it woke everyone up and caused them to yell and scream bloody murder about the story being abysmal. Which, if it hasn't sent a clear message to CS3 at this point, they're beyond saving anyway.

Eh, if they have any desire to fight back against WoW's housing, it'd be fairly easy for them to do so. It's more a question of whether they want to.
They could easily add a Z axis to the movement tools.
They could (fairly) easily make instanced housing a thing, considering they were basically halfway there with the island and then just... didn't do it.
The only thing they might not do is (limited) object rescaling.
But they have 10 years of housing updates and a catalogue of things to craft, buy, farm, whatever. If they were to make instanced housing, they'd be 10 years ahead in the ways you can customize a house.
They just need to be willing to do so. And yeah, it wouldn't happen in one patch, it'd still require work, but they could do it and it wouldn't require earthshattering amounts of work.

On paper, I can understand the general concept of what they wanted Forked Tower to be. Personally, I'd love more things to be incorporated to try to tap into that old-school MMO feeling.

But there's just so much they fucked up with Forked Tower that it blows my mind that it was ever approved for launch.

The level of entry needs to be tweaked. Sure, you don't need a full set of OC gear or multiple masteries. But a Phantom Job at max level should be required to enter because certain abilities or spells are critical. Then fact that you only need 16 people to enter but need 24 to pass the first boss is a huge oversight. I don't remember if they were trying to fix this or not.

The raise restriction is definitely huge decentivizer, and it's wild to me that there isn't a single safeguard in place for uncontrollable mistakes.

If they don't learn from these mistakes...Don't give a good story hook in 7.3...And don't address housing situation especially with WoW's changes...It's all over for XIV. Because let's be real, most of the playerbase only cares about the MSQ and their venues.

I think they actually are gonna step away from job gauges for at least a few jobs, their importance has been reducing further and further as time goes by even if they're not stepping away from the builder-spender job design just yet. Bard's could be replaced with a timer, Dragoon's only tracks whether you've used Geirskogul and whether Wyrmwind Thrust can be used now, Black Mage's is essentially vestigial and only tracks Foul/Xenoglossy count and whether you can use Flare Star, Viper and Reaper's biggest elements are tracking your actual combo step during transformation burst.

I do hope they try class designs that aren't builder-spender, even their "measured, constant DPS jobs" in Viper and Monk are still builder-spenders now at the end of the day.

Most new players joined during the "Anomaly" phase of the game where there was both a great MSQ and good side content to do not exclusive to raiders. The reason why EW retained a moderately high playerbase throughout despite having no side content of it's own is because there was both Bozja and Eureka(ShB buffed) to do for newer players even if it was older content by that point alongside all the other older expansion stuff.

Savage has been eternally been on a downward trend of player participation save for one specific point, the start of EW at 6.05, that's when tens of thousands, if not likely hundreds of thousands, of new players engaged with Savage for the first time and discovered that it's nothing like the rest of the game. The entire rest of the game is designed around doing it blind then the endgame is Lost Ark styled "Watch a guide three times over" shenanigans.

Savage content is so underplayed that it literally dies within the patch it's introduced. Chaotics are already joever, M1-4S are joever, hell you'd likely struggle to fill a fresh "new players welcome" learning for M5-8S at this point. The only time previous Savages are run is when you either no-synch destroy everything or memers trying to solo very old savages, largely the same problem for EXs hence why the Unreals exist in the first place.

It's almost entirely a raiders game with an MSQ attached to it and the few times it hasn't been were Adventure Forays designed for everyone. So making the new Foray into a raider's game means there's even less for everyone to do but more for raiders to do. Players have every right to be annoyed about it.

They need to evolve the raid systems somehow to gain new players or it will be right back to SB or lower population, even the latest population data shows this trend where they're losing all the gains from ShB and EW. It will sustain itself with it's low budget like it did before but it's probably not something SE wants to see happen.

A writer who was passionate about the world they're building would go out of there way to make sure they've created a coherent fictional society, they'd have artists create various forms of attire their people wear (depending on their job, their status, etc.), they'd even create an entirely unique lingo for them especially if they're meant to be from another world, or from a significantly more advanced society. The entire city is just a generic neon sci-fi city of souless rectangular skyscrapers, the people there just wearing pre-Dawntrail glams (the citizens wearing EW pvp armor, the Oblivion organization just wearing Bozja clothes that look completley out of place, then there's the lala who's name escapes me who runs the Arcadion who's wearing a fucking tuxedo and cowboy hat).

Hell, the way Alexandrian's speak doesn't even fit a cyberpunk style setting. If you've played Cyberpunk you'd know how the writers came up with completely unique lingo for people in that setting (which is supposed to be in the year 2077), like people say "gonk" instead of "idiot", "choom" instead of "friend", etc. Everyone SOUNDS like you'd expect from a futuristic cyberpunk setting. Meanwhile, in Solution 9 everyone talks like they're still in medieval times, still using words like "naught", or "scoundrel", etc. Still having a King and Queen. Like what the fuck.

But the reality is the current writing team has absolutely zero remaining passion for this game's world. They didn't make Solution 9 because they were passionate about exploring a futuristic society in the context of FFXIV, they did it solely to cater to the modern-slop crowd and it shows in how utterly unimaginative, inconsistent, and lazy Solution 9 is as a whole, from it's architecture, fashion, to even their manner of speaking. What you ask for and what you get are not the same things.

You also forget that ShB, EW, and DT all are in a post large gameplay update world and that we're rapidly approaching a time where the "post Cataclysm" existence of the game will be longer than what came before it.

It's why the game needs a hard reset, a sequel, XIV-2, or whatever you want to call it. The old gameplay from 2.0-pre 5.0 was balanced around a bunch of shit that post 5.0 onward simply doesn't have, adding or taking away more stuff effects 2 different halves of the game now.

If 8.0 comes out and it's the true full overhaul to the gameplay it would need to hit the ARR-SB portion without breaking it and the ShB-DT section without breaking that too. It's a fuckfiesta of problems now.

The only reasonably way to fix the jobs is to go batshit with them with regards to how they interact with existing content and how you can use them to deal with said content (since I assume the following will never change)

1. The fights are in/out/stack/spread/stand in spot
2. The combat can't have RPG mechanics because balancing :(

SAM gets counters/counter stances like BLU, and they get a skillchain like system
DRG jump is invincible and works like PVP but not easy to get/use + extra range on all attacks because lance

Not really. Even in Solution Nine the attention is always on Wuk Lamat due to her ties with Gulool Ja and Sphene, and her royal status in a foreign/enemy kingdom. We're constantly treated like her sidekick or bodyguard, not even a full mentor, since we don't teach her shit, we just take care of strong enemies or annoying delays for her. She comes to the conclusion she will never be as good as her brothers by herself, accepting it and wanting to focus on peace after traveling around, not because the WoL showed her the way. The only ones who have been finally focusing wholly on us are Calyx and real Sphene.

For the most part in OC, I was just doing CEs. While I was doing that, I was just working my way through getting each job maxed. By the time I'd finished maxing all the jobs, there wasn't much left for me to do there. Yeah, I could work on a second gear set, or grind coffers, but that's getting into niche territory that most people don't care about.

Then it comes onto the type of content. Half of the phantom jobs are pretty useless for CEs, and then among the rest it's pretty much just a hierarchy of which does more damage. There's maybe a bit of consideration to flex for more utility (maybe you want Knight mits to survive) or job synergy (berserker works better on a tank than other roles), but for the most part, if you're only doing CEs, those things don't matter much.

Forked Tower is the obvious exception, which does have specific requirements for Phantom Jobs. Without getting into the usual debate on the pros and cons of that content, it's something only a subset of the community cares about, and it's one instance in OC. It's still just a checklist of certain jobs having required actions, which then won't really use the rest of their kit, and half of those requirements can be skipped or cheesed depending on the type of FT run you're doing. But it is at least a place that expects you to use specific jobs.

But there should really be more of that. Traps in the main OC area that make use of thief/ranger, areas that are inaccessible without thief/geo, which maybe appear at certain times and encourage people to team up to open them up. There should be more enemies that benefit from using the special abilities like berserker's rage, oracle's cleanse, thief's debuff, etc. There should be more of a reason to solo stuff that makes you consider taking a phantom job with extra mits or heals.

A month ago I'd have laughed but they did end up somehow untangling the headmorph/hairstyle/headgear issue with Hrothgar and Viera. At least partially. So who knows.

Split/Slug/Hot are now a slow moving cast/cooldown similar to PVP, Flamethrower becomes a walking toggle, so moving with it activated doesn't break the cast, but activating it again does (Movement with it active is at walking speed), and Full Metal Field is a channeled ability, dealing wide AoE damage over time centered on the target. While channeled, the MCH becomes immobile, so they cannot be moved by enemy or friendly effects. It cannot be manually stopped by the MCH.

I'm going to assume so as well as the timing is ripe. Him mentioning it multiple times during Dawntrail's media cycle makes me think it's something he wants to mention soon. The soonest opportunity would be 8.0, as there's no way they're going to overhaul character customization anywhere in 7.x.
It would also make sense as I said with them finishing the graphical update. Update what exists, then you can add new stuff to it. Rather than adding new stuff first that is lower fidelity that you then have to update with the graphical update.
Now it could very well be something planned for farther off than 8.0, but 8.0 just makes more sense to me. No point in dropping it that far in advance.

Yeah, the deal was always that Viera and Hrothgar would not get hats or helms, but they'd get special hairstyles to make up for it. Some headgear worked because "a few people on the team decided to make them work in their spare time."
Then they gave up on that and started making them compatible with regular and obtained hairstyles in Endwalker.
For the most part they've been quite forthright with not having any intention to give them hats. Until late Endwalker if not Dawntrail, I think?
