The other anons are not entirely correct. It's not that the pain just becomes pleasurable because senses are cranked up to 11, it's that sensation and seeking sensation is so cranked up that the people experiencing it eventually can no longer tell the difference between pain and pleasure, and seek more and more extreme sensations to test the bounds of what can be experienced. Both the original book and the original movie make it clear that suffering that fate is pretty horrible until their mind breaks. In the book the guy ends up cumming so hard and so long it starts to hurt, and he experiences immediate horror to realize that is the closest thing to actual pleasure he is going to experience and it's been all of 30 seconds and the cenobites haven't even started in on him yet. In the book and movie he then talks about how it it is complete torture until things start to become dull and then, know longer remembering anything else, more extremes are sought. It should be no surprise that it is inspired by and somewhat of a critique of BDSM culture. It should also be no surprise that it inspired a quite a few popular culture species/races/cultures.

Fun fact: Clive Barker never liked calling Pinhead, Pinhead. He ended up naming the character the Hellpriest, which was also pretty weird because originally the Cenobites had no connection to Hell or a hell, they were just Cosmic Horror like sex club purveyors. But it seems like with Hellraiser 3 the idea that the Cenobites are literal demons of Christian, or at least Christian-like, Hell was pretty much solidified in both the public conscious and Barker's depiction.

In the movie version (and this backstory was provided by Clive Barker, the author of the book himself, so he himself gave the Cenobites new lore for the movies) the Cenobite realm is governed by a god, Leviathan, which is responsible for creating the Cenobites. The Cenobites are people who open the box, so if someone has the right frame of mind and has been tortured long enough, Leviathan may promote them to becoming a Cenobite if it thinks they're right for the job.

As the sequels go on the Cenobite realm gets rebranded as Christian hell or something along those lines, when the aids got to Clive Barker's brain he even started insisting that.

The first Phantasm is a surreal incoherent artsy movie. The sequels are more accessible and coherent. They're basically road trip movies with the Tall Man gradually turning the US into an apocalyptic wasteland. It's a mix of Mad Max and Evil Dead. Hellraiser lore is so cool the idea that there are some other dimensional pervert beings that just exist to live in pain because it gets them off is so fucked up and weird in a good way that it makes me sad that really none of the movies have even properly explored how cool it is. First movie gets the closest, but its a very, very messy screenplay, 2nd movie feels more about the surreal and less about the pervert pain side.

Hellraiser is a series of loosely connected movies centering around the summoning of extra-dimentional S&M beings called Cenobite, typically led by the Hell Priest Pinhead with a puzzle box called the Lament Configuration for a big gory finale.

I highly recommend the 1st 2 films, 3 is fun in cheesy 90's slasher sort of way, 4 is Sci Fi madness, 5-9 were just generic horror movies that just had the Hellraiser IP shoehorned in to then just to keep the film rights from reverting back to Clive Baker, 10 is extremely low budget movie that tries to "play the hits" of the previous series, but was at least conceived as a Hellraiser movie, the 11th and most recent movie billed as a gender flipped remake, is more of a modern send up of the 2nd film with a slasher movie victims cast, the makeup effects are excellent for a Hulu movie.

My thoughts on the game is it's clearly inspired by the 11th film but is using 1st films iconic Cenobite designs. Hellraisers are typically not action movies
