This is the only one im gonna fight you. I tried for days to get my manually modded skyrim to work because mod managers are absolute dog shit once you start hitting 345+ mods & it in fact did not work. Otherwise you are right. I used manjaro for 6 months because thats what valve recommended. Got peer pressured into actual arch, had a good time before finding out the documentation for my network card had been scrubbed from the forums it was on. So after that fuck up & being unable to install it after moving back to manjar & learning a hard lesson about saving web pages snapshots of important shit I am back in win10 til I build my new pc.

Slop just werks 90 percent of the time sure. There's still plenty of issues as well even with the slopped games and for every game that performs 5 percent better there are 10 that run worse or not at all.
You may be convincing yourself you've learned a skill and are big brained for doing everything manually and the long way but in reality you're wasting more of your short time on this earth posturing to avoid what? Debloating the telemetry bs?

Mint does come with an archive manager, and it works, though if I'm dealing with ZIP files and already have a terminal open then I usually just run "unzip" from the command line, which also works.

>once you start hitting 345+ mods
This isn't just a Linux problem, it's a modding and engine limitation problem. I imagine you didn't do any cleaning, combining, and converting to light? Once you hit 300, you really have to start optimizing if you want to go any further. You can go well over 1000 but if you don't know what you're doing, rule of thumb is to stick under 300 total, and even then that's considering you're not running 200 heavily scripted mods.

Last time I tried it I tried two different version, and they sucked. I switched back to Windows 7 and wondered to this day who the fuck in their right mind even bothers with this infinite jank.

Android is the only version I've ever used that didn't shit its pant. Nearly every other one breaks, most of them on a reboot.

There's a reason Linux never takes off, no matter how bad windows gets.

Cool but I literally didn't ask.
Windows 7 was nice so you don't need to be mad about having gone back to it. It sounds like you never had a legitimate reason to use Linux which is mostly for people who hate Windows, so I don't know why you ever tried it in the first place. People said it was "good"? Who cares? Some people say macOS is "good" but I'm not gonna go out and buy a Macintosh and then get mad about it being what it is. I know it's not for me, because I have the ability to think for myself.

the only thing bad about linux is bloated game sizes from having to install shaders and proton versions.
also the fact steam doesnt self delete its own caches when you uninstall games for some reason (?)
and the interconnected nature of dependencies whenever you want to uninstall some program you dont use or need anymore.
other than that shit is pretty tight and you'd have to be actual sub 80 iq to get filtered by a beginner distro in 2025.
it just werks.

>if you dont know what you're doing, rule of thumb is to stick under 300 total
Here's the thing though, I did know what I was doing. I had skyrim so hyper optimized that it never crashed with my manual mod list. Upon moving to linux though it didnt work. The reason it didnt work had nothing to do with my mods, it had more to do with script extender & proton not getting along. There was a way to fix this. Installing a custom script that placed mod organizer 2 on top of my skyrim launcher in steam. The issue with this is as follows
1. Its a manual mod list
2. It had mods that MO2 would disable similar to bethesdas creation club downloader which i also disabled & removed from the game
3. False warnings about non working or updated mods
4. Made the mod list more unstable somehow despite me never having a crash without it
To which I've heard 4 is because the mods arent managed or whatever. My point is modding everything doesnt just work for some people. I've also been told the culprit is proton not handling dotnet & some other things several mods required properly. I'm also not saying this bothered me. I just uninstalled it & moved on with my life.

I found a random indie game to uninstall just to test this, and it turns out you're wrong. Either that or your shit's all fucked up (not my problem).
>and the interconnected nature of dependencies whenever you want to uninstall some program you dont use or need anymore.
What do you mean? When you uninstall a program, packages that aren't used anymore can be deleted with "sudo apt autoremove". It's not hard. It also doesn't remove dependencies that are still needed by other things. I don't see the problem unless your shit's all fucked up (not my problem).

wether its caches or something else, i had 30GB of folders in my steam directory all named after games id uninstalled, i deleted them with no issue leading me to believe they are cache's you have to delete just like on the steam deck.
>It also doesn't remove dependencies that are still needed by other things.
thats exactly my problem.
i will never use shit like libreoffice yet it is permanently stuck on my pc because its a dependency for other programs.

if i remember correctly it was a generic "this program cannot be uninstalled because it is a dependency for others" message and i couldnt be bothered to troubleshoot further.
yes it could be harmless, at the same time im well aware how easy it is to nuke your install so for the sake of the 1 - 2GB's its taking up it really isnt worth it to me.

Actual IT here
Linux is amazing for devices with narrow functions. We use it at work for OSs for our robotics and I'm working on getting a server rack together that has few VMs running Red Hat. Absolutely no complaints, runs like a dream. Braindead simple to use once you know your stuff.
For a regular workhorse device it's absolute hammered dogshit. Especially if you need airgapped machines that can't just pull whatever package you want whenever. Linux for regular daily use is a meme pushed by contrarians.

The only OS i actually like is Win7, but i'm forbidden to use it by modern applications so use the one i hate less (linux with xfce).
The kind of annoyances that linux brings are less annoying than the WIn10/11 ones, and that's the LTSC ones.
The full blown versions are full idiocracy mode.

Most people with friends aren't grinding competitive garbage, lmfao. They're playing co-op games together, of which there are thousands and they all work on whatever platform you choose.

Competitive AAA games are for the lower 1/3 of the bell curve for male IQ, so it makes sense why these exact people are the ones seething about the idea of having to learn something new. These are the same people who think changing to a new browser is a monumentous task. Genuine fucking morons. Dolts. Dullards.

i mean yes. microsoft has backported a lot of their shit into windows 10 anyways. linux users are just jumping in to try to scare people into switching.
if you're sick of microsoft, linux will always be there, but using iot windows, extended support windows 10, even windows 11 won't kill you in your sleep. just don't use windows 7.

I don't use Linux because it works perfectly, but because it works fine for most things, and if something is not working I am given the control to change and fix things. Having grown up with PCs in the early 2000s, Windows just doesn't feel personal anymore. It feels like you are given slop by an Indian and told not to complain because all your software works (not true), while you dare not notice or complain about the unneccessary bloat/spyware, which you are subjegating yourself to.
Yes Windows is easier, but if you are white, you should get the hang of Linux easily. It's actually wild how just using your PC becomes a rewarding experience.
Remember it's supposed to be your personal computer.

Patch the game with the proton prefix of the game title if it's an .exe to be ran.
With Protontricks you can doubleclick to run .exe and it opens a window that lets you select the game prefix from the list of what you have installed. Otherwise ctrl+c and ctrl+v.

mint is most definitely not a seperate project, it's still a fork and relies heavily on gnome. they're already porting adwaita so that they can use gnome applications on their system. they're also still using mutter.
mint is a small project, they don't have the scope or the manpower of modern gnome to enact large changes.

Bruh this ain't a Nintendo thread.
You don't need to "switch" to Linux. If there are things you want to do on Linux then just dual boot and keep Windows for your Adobe Photoshart or whatever it is. If a simple dual-boot setup sounds like too much of a hassle, then you don't actually want Linux enough to have ever had any chance of being happy on it. Within a week you would have been crying about some little inconvenience like not having all the exact same keyboard shortcuts as Windows by default.

Doesn't even exist on ProtonDB anymore. There's only thumbs-up/thumbs-down (and then a second thumbs-up/thumbs-down for after tinkering where applicable), and then a shitty algorithm uses that data to generate a worthless platinum/gold/silver/bronze rating that should be ignored.
To be honest, ProtonDB should just remove ratings, and it should be a site for people who can actually read instead of needing everything color-coded.

Not to mention the report not actually saying "platinum". Or any explicit rating.
If a report mentions any amount of tinkering then technically it corresponds to a "gold" rating AT BEST anyway, and it's not the ProtonDB user's fault that the rolled-up total rating is platinum despite his report. Meanwhile the thumbs-up on the individual report is based on a subjective question in the reporting questionnaire. So no one lied except for the web site itself.

Wish it actually just worked, but sometimes it just fucks itself.
Pic related is GNOME unable to use HDR, there's a lot of banding.
On Plasma Wayland, font rendering is really fucked with fractional scaling. Nothing looks correctly at 125%. I want Wayland for HDR support. I also get desktop artifacts from time to time. I'm not sure if enabling DSC has anything to do with it.
I also grabbed some VR headset and while I'm using ALVR, which works on linux apparently, I'm also using an application to very smoothly stream 8k VR porn to my headset called 4X Link. There is no non-half assed way of doing this on linux from what I've seen. And I'm not spending extra on a big ass SSD to keep transferring files back and forth when I can just stream them.

That's wrong. They both have about the same amount of fiddling around if you actually want to have a comfortable time using your OS. The only differences are that fiddling around in Windows is a lot harder and the documentation is more difficult to parse because there's a huge amount of misinformation and Windows is a lot more restrictive to you doing something that'd be inconvenient to fix (such as breaking boot). You can still do it, pretty easily in fact. I've accidentally broken boot on Windows more times than Linux because I usually notice the warning that I just did something wrong in the console whereas Windows registry editing doesn't have any feedback mechanism.

Installing Linux is also easier, since it only takes like 10 minutes on a decent PC for something like EndeavourOS or CachyOS. Debian has an installer that is about on par with Windows in how difficult it is to use, but it has the advantage that you don't need to pre-bake settings like local accounts into the installer while writing the USB so it's more straightforward.

Of course using Linux has downsides.
If we focus on games, you will likely always be a second class citizen since the market share of Linux is (and will remain) far less than Windows.
There will be a learning curve and certain things will frustrate you.

Having said that, look at what Microsoft is doing to Windows.
Do you really want to be locked in to the Windows ecosystem?
A lot of people are going to be eating Microsoft's shit for decades because they refuse to change.
Windows 11 is already so shit and it's only going to get worse.
More spyware, more ads and more incompetent developers.

Meanwhile Linux is only getting better.
If we focus on gaming, Valve is putting their full weight behind Linux gaming.
Steamdeck has already boosted Linux users significantly.
Proton and DXVK just get better and better every release.
Hell, even NVIDIA is slowly getting better.

Sucks extra hard since EAC itself actually supports linux, it's just the developers of the games itself that don't want to support it.
Plus, these invasive anti cheats are useless anyway since these games are still filled with hackers anyway.
If you're truly interested in learning Linux then I would recommend you dual boot. Use Linux as much as you can and only boot Windows to play those EAC games.

All fun and games until something breaks. Then you need to dick around with a console window while a bunch of people on tech forum call you retarded.

I'd make fun of you more but you're probably too stupid to understand how stupid you are so it's not worth it.

just installed manjaro with kde. I've had some tough time getting things set up (fuck the windows boot manager, that shit would not get away like spaghetti sauce stain on tupperware). Also, the boot up is kinda fucky, it stays on the OEM logo for a bit, goes to the manjaro boot screen, goes back to OEM logo then flashes plasma screen (i think) then the boot screen. Any more tips are appreciated

Where do the goalposts go if no one ITT is actually from India? You might as well have a real argument now instead of later.

TBF anon it's not that we dont want to go to linux its that we would have narrow it down to several OS' on PC that would work and any one that knows knows that Arch and Debian are the best choices.

Distrohop to your heart's content, anon. If you have the option to do so and there's no mission critical stuff happening on your computer go out and explore as much as you like. Back when I got into it, I was trying all kinds of systems and learning what they all did differently and it was a blast. I would say now is a better time than ever to do that kind stuff because you can always fallback to more stable distros or even just windows, if you prefer

I have a job and I value my time,

I don't have countless hours to waste configuring a server os and tricking it with """"compatibility layers"""" into thinking it can play video games.

that is literally retarded. Windows exists, it does the thing, and it does it well.

No thank you.
