I had skyrim so hyper optimized that it never crashed with my manual mod list. Upon moving to linux though it didnt work. The reason it didnt work had nothing to do with my mods, it had more to do with script extender & proton not getting along. There was a way to fix this. Installing a custom script that placed mod organizer 2 on top of my skyrim launcher in steam. The issue with this is as follows
1. Its a manual mod list
2. It had mods that MO2 would disable similar to bethesdas creation club downloader which i also disabled & removed from the game
3. False warnings about non working or updated mods
4. Made the mod list more unstable somehow despite me never having a crash without it
To which I've heard 4 is because the mods arent managed or whatever. My point is modding everything doesnt just work for some people. I've also been told the culprit is proton not handling dotnet & some other things several mods required properly. I'm also not saying this bothered me. I just uninstalled it & moved on with my life.

Linux is amazing for devices with narrow functions. We use it at work for OSs for our robotics and I'm working on getting a server rack together that has few VMs running Red Hat. Absolutely no complaints, runs like a dream. Braindead simple to use once you know your stuff.

I don't use Linux because it works perfectly, but because it works fine for most things, and if something is not working I am given the control to change and fix things. Having grown up with PCs in the early 2000s, Windows just doesn't feel personal anymore. It feels like you are given slop by an Indian and told not to complain because all your software works (not true), while you dare not notice or complain about the unneccessary bloat/spyware, which you are subjegating yourself to.
Yes Windows is easier, but if you are white, you should get the hang of Linux easily. It's actually wild how just using your PC becomes a rewarding experience.

You don't need to "switch" to Linux. If there are things you want to do on Linux then just dual boot and keep Windows for your Adobe Photoshart or whatever it is. If a report mentions any amount of tinkering then technically it corresponds to a "gold" rating AT BEST anyway, and it's not the ProtonDB user's fault that the rolled-up total rating is platinum despite his report. Meanwhile the thumbs-up on the individual report is based on a subjective question in the reporting questionnaire. So no one lied except for the web site itself.

The only differences are that fiddling around in Windows is a lot harder and the documentation is more difficult to parse because there's a huge amount of misinformation and Windows is a lot more restrictive to you doing something that'd be inconvenient to fix (such as breaking boot). You can still do it, pretty easily in fact. I've accidentally broken boot on Windows more times than Linux because I usually notice the warning that I just did something wrong in the console whereas Windows registry editing doesn't have any feedback mechanism.
Installing Linux is also easier, since it only takes like 10 minutes on a decent PC for something like EndeavourOS or CachyOS. Debian has an installer that is about on par with Windows in how difficult it is to use, but it has the advantage that you don't need to pre-bake settings like local accounts into the installer while writing the USB so it's more straightforward.

Of course using Linux has downsides.
If we focus on games, you will likely always be a second class citizen since the market share of Linux is (and will remain) far less than Windows.
There will be a learning curve and certain things will frustrate you.
Having said that, look at what Microsoft is doing to Windows.
Do you really want to be locked in to the Windows ecosystem?
A lot of people are going to be eating Microsoft's shit for decades because they refuse to change.
Windows 11 is already so shit and it's only going to get worse.
More spyware, more ads and more incompetent developers.
Meanwhile Linux is only getting better.
If we focus on gaming, Valve is putting their full weight behind Linux gaming.
Steamdeck has already boosted Linux users significantly.
Proton and DXVK just get better and better every release.
Hell, even NVIDIA is slowly getting better.

>>716510937It does, though. I was just pointing out that "every game with anti-cheat" was not correct. I don't care about anything else. Debate somebody else on whether the percentage of games that work is "good" or "bad". It's not zero in any case, and hence:
>>716510325>>every gameNo.
>>716510927they are literally retarded

logic or common sense?
>>716511068your retarded troonix website.
>uhhhh that's only on Nvidia>just buy another GPUl-m-a-o
>>716511009Look at the Steam store warning. Yes it's a kernel level anti-cheat. It's just not kernel level on Linux because there is no access to the actual kernel. It is running under wine.
It spawns actually disgusting processes under Wine. If I was running it on real Windows I'd feel dirty.
>>716511194That screenshot was of "Are We Anti-Cheat Yet?", not ProtonDB or whatever the fuck triggered your ongoing mental health crisis.
>>716511291>it's kernel anti cheat>it's not kernel levelmeds

>>716511389It's kernel level on WINDOWS. On Linux such a thing literally cannot exist.

>>716439232 (OP)Will my midi synthesizer that doesn't have drivers newer than windows Vista work?
>>716509941>If you're truly interested in learning Linux then I would recommend you dual boot. Use Linux as much as you can and only boot Windows to play those EAC gamesyeah thats the thing though it feels pretty lame to have to dual boot. I guess you could get one of those stripped down copies of windows and use that so their invasive shit isn't as prevalent. I'm gonna try and do more testing to see if its worth doing all that. Maybe I'll just get two different PC's lmao, might be the way to go
>>716511115what even is the browser to use these days. Everything is either all up in your business or runs like ass
>>716511602So kernel level anti-cheats literally don't exist...?
>>716439232 (OP)I'm running Mint with LXDE in an old ass laptop I use to play old games on trips. Normally takes 1.1 GB of memory as a baseline. Is there a way to go even more lightweight? Any other distro that's not too different?
>>716511409I understand it. I just don't think it's a good way to communicate, and so I will push back on it. Don't write like a cretin next time.
>>716504237arch or debian.
arch if you want cutting edge, debian for stability and reliability. every distro is basically "arch but" or "debian but".
arch can be a bit merciless to start with so go with Endeavor (basically arch with a gui installer).
if debian isn't retard proof enough for you use mint
>>716439232 (OP)>VR "works"I know people who are simultaneously VR and Linux stans, have not heard good things.
at this point the only games you can't run on linux are the games specifically built to not run on it. proton and wine take care of 99% of use cases
>>716439567I actually thought you'd show me something worth playing.
>>716511696kernel level anti-cheat is Windows only, because Troonix is literally insecure and shit.

>>716439232 (OP)just installed manjaro with kde. I've had some tough time getting things set up (fuck the windows boot manager, that shit would not get away like spaghetti sauce stain on tupperware). Also, the boot up is kinda fucky, it stays on the OEM logo for a bit, goes to the manjaro boot screen, goes back to OEM logo then flashes plasma screen (i think) then the boot screen. >>716518472Distrohop to your heart's content, anon. If you have the option to do so and there's no mission critical stuff happening on your computer go out and explore as much as you like.
