How are you supposed to actually enjoy playing these games when you come to realize everything is actually super strict and rigid despite whatever customization it allows for your character?

Some characters only have scenes specific for one gender of the MC and that's it. When you do have sex, it's not anything dynamic in some way like Lilith's Throne does it. You just read the exact same rigid smut story with nothing else to it. It's very jarring. The least it could do is create some dynamic sex system based on the species specific genitalia and personality or whatever.

I know there are sometimes options for different scenes instead like "69" , "catch anal" , "cowgirl" etc etc, but, again, they're rigid and the same thing every time.

I have a confession: I've been playing text-based porn games for at least 15 years and I almost never read anything. I played CoC when it was still Unnamed Text Game, FoE, CoC2, TiTs, CoC mods, Free Cities and probably close to 200 others, many in twine.
I read almost nothing except character descriptions. I skim the beginning and end of scenes, that's it. Almost everything I get out of it is just stuff I imagine in my own head. I'll get the appearance, demeanor and some lines from characters to flesh out what I think of them and then that's about it. 90% of the time I look at a 10 paragraph scene and just hit 'next', 10% of the time I skim it to get the gist.
I assume this is not how most people play these games but it's what I enjoy. I do most of the imagining in my own head rather than reading how somebody else would have the situation play out between my character and a NPC.

It's so-so. Latest new stuff that's been added to it is a quest that gets fired up after like 30 in-game days or so where you have your ex-spouse come over to drop your two kids to stay with you and you can choose to keep them in or reject the idea. If you keep them with you, you get like another 30 days or so to raise their Love parameters for you enough so that when your ex-spouse comes to pick them back, they won't want to go with them and instead stay with you.

You can play it as sort of a life sim if you want, even though there's not too much to do with it that way, but you can, and just take care of your children, meet the friends they made at school, raise their Love for you by hanging out and feeding them candy. Or you can just start having incest with them. I played a female character once and one of my sons happened to be 9 and had the Nymphomaniac trait so that sort of spun up an imaginative arc in my head where he would start up learning about masturbation and whatnot then would creep in on me as his mom while I was showering or just getting horny from having to still sleep in the same bed as me while his older brother had his own room for himself instead.

You can also just play as a male character that goes around dating high school girls and impregnating all his neighbors wives. The system for it is there, but overall, it does start to feel kind of barebones at some point and maybe a bit grindy and repetitive. There's also some type of issues where you can almost immediately just make anyone want to have sex with you by simply flirting with them over and over again the first time you meet so that you raise the Love parameter enough to the point they now see you as a Friend despise you still being a Stranger to them, so there's that.

It's still kind of flawed but it worked well enough for one or two playthroughs before I sort of just lost interest and went somewhere else.

You essentially get softlocked - you get put in a place where you're still constantly raped and tormented but now there are no means available to easily avoid it. You can still 'technically' get out, but it's so absurdly difficult that it's much easier just restarting or loading a save than trying.

I played EraK and EraTW, and Akuma Maid. They were alright but at some point you just lose interest in them when you saw pretty much everything there is to see in them and things just keep repeating now whenever you try to do anything with them.

There's a new one getting translated called Era Blue Resort where you're basically in charge of a Resort that people come to visit and stay at for a while to relax and do shit. Your whole job is to get the residence to have sex with you or just do erotic stuff with you in charge in order to collect some sort of Z points that allow you to purchase extra skills together with upgrades for your Resort. It also has a dungeon mechanic where you can take guests / residents or people you manage to turn into employees with you there in order to gain items and money for it along with further the story and opening up more stuff for your resort through it.

It seems all interesting at first and whatnot, but you quickly come to realize it's just pretty lacking and grindy to some degree, yet despite the grind, you can almost always, immediately have someone fall for you as long as you just spent like 2~3 straight days pestering them and them alone with hugs, talks, serving team and playing with them in the pool or gambling together. Just repeat those actions over and over again a few times and you can just freely have sex with and cum inside of them raw so they become pregnant from someone they barely even know just because you were being hyper nice to them or some shit like that. It's a weirdly broken system.

Also, I'm not sure if you can actually rape them. All the sex I had in it was consensual. I think you might be able to get them blackout drunk and then fuck them like that, but for whatever reason, there's no actual option to just manually offer them alcohol, you have to dare them to drink if they lose at playing cards with you, and the problem is that doesn't always trigger so it's very inconsistent and it rarely ever works.

they started working on porting the game to a custom engine in Godot a while back, and I suspect most of the writers decided to wait for that, but as should have been obvious from the start that shit was never going to happen and they bit off way more than they could chew, and now they're not even putting the "Work on the gogot port continues" thing in the update notes.
And as usual for a failing project on its last legs, they decided to keep milking the last few pennies from its dried out corpse for as long as possible instead of fixing the issues killing it, so now there's a private backers build that gets the already extremely limited new content a month early.
If it's still alive by 2026 I'll be mildly surprised.

The difficulty with CoC-likes is that CoC only works because it has an absolute shitload of writing.
It's in the sweetspot between linear CYOA Twine stuff and big text based simulators like the Era games where it has a lot of the appeal of both and so casts a wide net, but it's also in the position that maximizes the amount of writing necessary, moving towards the Twineshit means you only have to write one or two paths for everything and moving towards the Era stuff means everything is procedural and systems based. So if you, coming along after CoC and wanting to make your own, try to find a way to make it easier on yourself and not spend the next 5 years writing content 8 hours a day you're almost invariably going to fall out of that sweetspot. Or you're just going to have 1/200th of the content of CoC/2/TiTs and no one will care about it.
