Anyway, I just play old games and replay games I already own. N64, PS2, OG Xbox, et cetera. It's crazy how much fun games used to be, and they're still there, waiting to be played. Also, Elden Ring, BG3, Cyberpunk. There are still great games being made, but they're few and far in between.

There's a million great older games that I haven't played. I have a CRT and retro consoles. Even in my meager physical collection there is tons of new experiences. Honestly getting into retro collecting has been super refreshing for me. Sure it can be expensive but new consoles are $500 and games are $80, so it's really not that bad. Most ps2 games are like 10-20 bucks still.

Most modern games are made for retards, that need a detailed tutorial for every little thing and can't think for themselves. They are so feminized they need quality of life features for every small thing. It will get so bad there will be AI-assistants that play the game for you probably.

The mythical charm of what made games so great is the adventure. Going into a place that you do not know, that does not care about you much and you must figure out how to overcome it. Simply said, look out for games, that have some difficulty.

i'm 35. gaming is better than it has been since about the early 2000s which is the last time it was actually good. yes, AAA is in the bin... which was self-inflicted and deserved and has provided space for AA, indie, etc. all to thrive.

i don't agree with the muh porn addiction muh fried dopamine receptors guy, i'm a massive gigacoomer and have been since like 2007 and i still enjoy shit just fine. what i do think is that people who only ever looked at the big releases coming out and hopped on those are having a discoverability crisis because that's not where the good shit is anymore. and i think that's very understandable; it IS difficult to find stuff. i found a pipeline that works for me, but if you aren't on 4chan and in gaming discords all the time and watching every direct/state of play/etc. you're probably going to have a tougher time of it.

i will say your standards go up as you get older. you have a wider spectrum of experience to draw from so you become more difficult to please. you also have less time and willpower to experiment. at least in my case i often tend to fall back on games i have thousands of hours in, i have to make a deliberate effort NOT to do this and that usually happens between jobs when i have more time.

I play the games I enjoy. Vermintide 2, Darktide, BF1, Doom, DRG, XCOM2, Starcraft 2, AC6, Hollow Knight, Darkest Dungeon, etc. I stay away from the worst slop possible, if your definition of "gaming" is buying all the latest AAA slop that's been advertised into your head then it's your own fault.

I also live a decent life, that helps. I have friends, I have a work out group, I go to work part time, I have money and good hardware, and my mental health is relatively decent. I promise you it's way easier to enjoy vidya if you do this instead of NEETing in your house all day every day trying to convince yourself to shower.

AAA has gotten worse because of bloated budgets and corporatization which was already getting in there during 7th gen but accelerated much further during COVID and is currently in the middle of collapsing, but what few AA devs that are still out there and a solid amount of indies absolutely pick up the slack. Modern gaming is as boring and formulaeic as it gets. OP is right. What changed is better graphics (stagnates too since 2015) and a better GUI. The "game" is still the same as 30 years ago. W3, CP2077, Starfield,.. whatever its all the same: There is hardly a game behind it. Maybe the occasian button hammering. BUT NO GAME.

We thought we will get a more dynamic environment soon in games, exploring paths that the devs couldnt predict. NPCs in Wizardry 9 where already way more interactive and unpredictable than anything in the past decades.

Dev studios GAVE UP on the game. They don't develop real sandboxes. They think gamers want the same game since ever.

No more new ideas for games. My uncle worked heavily in generally known to be good Blizzard and Bethesda games and it appears to be reaching a pinnacle, because nobody has any ideas for new mechanics or content. It means they already came out or you want a tribute game to master the build of the game, which they already do. Example, Custom Robo was new. Gundam Breaker 4 appears like a remake to me after a million other ones in between, as an alternate play style. Ghost Of Tsushima is similar, but as a very deep alternate in how you fight as more close-range oriented, less flying around and with more options in that aspect. Another similar being Bloodborne or Elden Ring PVP, as another alternate based more on fighting like a knight. Then Monster Hunter being another alternate as make the enemy large or unique, feeling kind of like something new or like a mix to me. Halo like the middle of Battlefield and Call Of Duty to me... Brawlout like Smash or Brawlhalla. Occasionally something like splatoon/foamstars, Bomberman pacman comes out... Shit they even remade pacman with championship edition 2. Then it's new levels. And then it becomes add Seth Rogan because people are not pleased. They remade Mario kart with team sonic racing, adding drafting. They remade chess on steam, don't know if it is any good though because chess was a done game. I want more multiplayer levels for cold war yes I suck arse I guess or a map creator. I can't complain about game modes because it had the only ones I can think of. They remade cod with advanced warfare and nobody liked it with the rocket boost jumps and strafes and lasers that nobody liked very much. Sleeping dogs was like a new Grand theft auto kind of and in a unique map. People want sequels and will kill them over it, but nobody has any new ideas. That's why I think the elder scrolls online is getting so much dlc. If people buy it, it gets dlc. Nobody plays cold war so probably no more dlc that nobody plays. im sor.

I don't think the problem is competence itself. It's a problem of inbred reference-points. Each generation of developers lack more context than the one before, both with established franchises they're working on but also how you make games, not just fun, but compelling.
Each generation has lost a bit of knowledge from before about why certain things were made as they were, and the tendency to solely listen to "feedback" causes publishers and developers to mislead themselves thinking they can remove unpopular aspects of a game even if that feature had a purpose. Best example is Dark Souls and their popularity, because they're the only games that really earned their reputation for a long time, despite several critics and designers constantly shouting "It's bad, it's made the wrong way, this isn't for everybody" etc. and wanting an "easy mode". Souls did indeed sidestep a lot of ideas we've given outselves about how things "should" be made today, but it's exactly good because it ignored that and stuck to its own principles.
When there are no difficulty modes, it means everything was tuned to how the devs decided it, and it puts the entire community of players through the same experience together, which gives people something in common to talk about. Not having GDC-standard map screens or design patterns means a lot of new developers don't have any knowledge about how the game was done, but the devs who made it do. it's their design.

A big problem is definitely the oversharing of things like GDC (Game Developer's Conference) a huge libtard event where Japanese and European devs come to America to share how they implemented features. It's necessary now that games are so fucking expensive, but it's also exactly why almost all games seemingly share the same 5 features like "Ubisoft Map", "Dark Souls Combat", "Conversation Options" etc. because someone watched a powerpoint.

Kirby Air Ride and gamecube Animal Crossing have some mods in development right now by fans, and with fans you don't have to worry about some microtransaction loop or grinding bullshit that is only there so you can pay to skip it. Normally not a puzzle guy myself but I love Tetsuya Mizuguchi's work so Lumines and Tetris got to me and I found Tetrachroma from there. I've played a bit of Puzzle Fighter too because I'm also big on peak Capcom, had a friend who could beat peoples' ass with Dan in college. I think there's a clone from a few years ago called Crystal something or other but it was from Nicalis so I don't know if it's worthwhile.

Only downside imo is that most dungeons are the usual MMO fare of a few corridors with a few rooms, but there's still big dungeons with proper level design that are way better than any of the caves in DD2. There's a million old games that I haven't played yet so I'm just doing that or replaying them.
Shit sucks but it is what it is.
I had had faith in 2 modern games and my expectations have been betrayed on both occasions. If I am ever giving a modern game another chance I will absolutely not pay for it ever again.
