they probably would do best returning to slower paced turn based RPGs with a focus on art style, music, and romantic stories and just accepting this, when done well, is a stable and profitable but not infinitely scalable business model. there absolutely is a dedicated audience out there for these games, its just not massive by modern gaming standards. when people think about Final Fantasy they think about love stories and soundtracks and art styles, not gripping action gameplay. of course I think this sort of reasonable expectation and self control is impossible for a publicly traded company.

Full on separation from shareholder influence, ALL politics except in writing themes, and the casualcore nongamer consumer base. Stop the dlc, stop the content farming. Stop expansions, release a full finished game, without a gigantic focus on extreme cinematics.

Start over with your old core and create fundamentally sound and structurally well made final fantasy games again, based on old archetypes and old style script writing, with modified turn based engines that are more interactive to actually retain users interest.

Nah one of its main criticisms was that it was stretched way too fucking thin and basically designed a game first and then artificially embiggened it for a quasi-open world.
It would've been even worse if it launched in the wake of Skyrim 1, Fallout 4, or Witcher 3 which in the case of the former two at least had heavy systemic gameplay elements and in the case of the latter had pretty involved side quests and writing. Jobs used to have abilities to help others(and themselves) with TP and MP. Now, these skills were pretty mediocre but they were still there as a way to offer multiplayer gameplay between parties.

The implementation of these RPG systems was beyond horrible, truthfully, it was. But that doesn't mean the game should do away with those systems, because later on, when they want to ACTUALLY expand the game, it's going to be IMPOSSIBLE.

This is how we got to this point. Why do all jobs feel the same? Why can't Square Enix reward things? Why is every singular instance happening in perfectly shaped arenas? Why are rotations completely solo? Why is gear so boring?

Trust me, it's not trusts.

HOW else could classes be designed? Now, if they wanted to TRULY expand the game they'd need to do actual engineering of new programming in order to make new features, something they haven't done since A REALM REBORN, twelve years ago.

One of the best things about open-world games Skyrim is that you can set out to do one thing, and then get distracted by something else that you see in passing and then you just kind of do a bunch of whatever and forget what you were initially trying to do. Final Fantasy XIV can be that, but because so much content is opt-in it rarely is.

For a simple example, you could be doing FATEs to level/grind atma and see that some mobs you walked by are hunt marks and veer off course to collect those delicious nut sacks. But that little emergent interaction only happens if you grabbed your daily marks in Tuliyollal and just kind of left them in your inventory in the hopes you'd see them naturally.

What if I'm doing my crafter alliance raid in Shaaloani and Ttokrrone is about to spawn? That's something I'd actually like to do, and I've probably missed it several times. I almost never do ocean fishing because whenever I think to check it it's not close to starting. I bet there are a lot of people who don't care about crafting but would still be interested in doing the Moon Base upgrade FATEs, but how will they know when it (or a red alert)'s about to pop?

I realize that the game would be annoying if there was a pop-up every time a timed Botanist node spawned near me regardless of class or whatever, but turn the Timers menu into a book with all this shit in it and let me set what I want alerts for. Let me know if my favorite Crystalline Conflict map is up without me having to check. Have the Dawn Hunts update for me automatically if I don't have any. Whenever I'm starting to get bored of what I'm doing, jangle some keys in front of my face like the dumb baby I am and entice me to do something else.

So that other post about Monk had a few talk about how while Monk may be the least leveled job, according to FFLogs data, it's not the least played. The absolute least played job in the game award goes to everyone's favorite FFXIV original sin, Ninja.

There were a few comments on why that is, some my own: Mudra punishment, being a 'puzzle' to assemble that changes the rules too much for people to enjoy its leveling process, lower rates on jobs starting at level 1 that aren't White Mage (plus you can't even start as this one!), Viper appealing to people who want to dual-wield and not be Naruto (though I'll note here that FF games had ninja wizardry before Naruto existed), and so on.

It starts at level 1, but it's not a default is probably the greatest offender. Also the tone shift in it's theme is off-putting, you start as a rogue then promote into something completely different thematically.

Then comes the awkwardness of mudra inputs to learn. To casual players moving and inputting mudras is a tall request. Many simply drop the job before the perfecting the input memory needed to perform well.

Then of course comes aesthetics. Ninja suffers similarly to Reaper in that it is locked aesthetically to a very specific look for it's actions. Fashion lock is as valid reason as any to drive away players.

I like mudra when they work well. I've got one of those standard corsair mmo mice with the 12 side buttons so it actually feels good to do the three button combos, usually. Usually is the load bearing word of that sentence as well, because when you have even a little bit of lag or choppiness and you get rabbit'd you want to shoot yourself in the fucking head. And it would be one thing if they made it a mid DPS/debuff class, but your Mug needs to either be lower CD or more impactful, and you would need more debuffs overall to justify not simply using braindead Samurai if you want to play a weeb class that does a lot of damage. Basically in a more flexible game like FFXI this version of Ninja would probably thrive, but this is a game that hates bosses getting hit by debuffs so you'll never get paralyze or slow, something significant. It's just a DPS that has to work harder than most other DPS classes to do roughly the same things.

I feel like this is a bit of recency bias taking place. Not to say the fights particularly difficult, but when compared to the post savage ex's released in EW, I can't see how this is easier. Blue bird was pretty brain dead, Rubicante was a nothing burger since you skipped limit cut with any sort of dps and his spatial mechs had set floor patterns you could follow, Zeromus had one actual wipe mech in meteors which if you couldn't do you could just kys and still resolve. This isn't even mentioning EW/DT release ex's which were either dps/mechanical jokes or just straight dorito fights.

Theme park MMOs dont HAVE previous expansion endgame content. You're thinking about this like a real actual video game, where an expansion is just 'more content' to do, a new landmass, quests, ect. The 'content' in something like say, WoW or XIV is inherently ephemeral. The fight you do week 1 of a tier is not the same as the fight you do week 6.
Here is a total list of 'expansion' content that a new player can engage with after its done:

>normal raids
XIV players are lying little liars who talk about how 'content lasts forever' in the game, but the reality is that it is cartoonishly, comedically unrealistic to expect any players to do any piece of content even a month after its release, because the content is all based around static timelines where X always happens at X:XX into the fight no matter what, and because gear and items are inherently worthless (there is nothing to use them on except 'parsing' and the next tier of welfare gear is always good enough to engage with patch content) that content dies almost immediately upon release.
The game's demise was inevitable because the people in charge had no idea what the fuck they were doing.
