Are there any WOW private servers or otherwise servers in MMOs dedicated specifically to roleplay anymore? The kind that actually have plugins and gameplay changes intended to foster roleply? And does anyone still play on them for any purpose other than sex erp?

you don't need to bumrush and hop everywhere because it's fun to walk and find yourself some adventure, you don't need to worry about armor or quests because you only seek what makes your character and instead write your own quests, send other players to get you stuff or pretend to be a bartender or something

Turtle is an RP server that eventually got swarmed by purely PvE players. There's plenty of RPers, though. It's the ONLY WoW private server I have ever seen that has an RP community other than Paragon and Epsilon, which are purely for RP and don't have the combat component of the game (which kind of soils it for me). Just download the TRP mod, make a character profile, and join one of the channels to find RP and you'll probably find some.
Unfortunately, a large amount of the RP is in events at odd hours that you usually have to be in the Discord to know about (which I'm not so I miss them), or in taverns in Stormwind's park (which I don't do). But people complain that there's not enough Horde/non-Stormwind RP, so if you tried to start some of that yourself you'd likely have bites. There's also plenty of active RP guilds.

If you blow up a ship in EvE it actually blows up and the other player experiences consequences represented by game mechanics. Dude I play tabletop all the time. Tabletop is still king, the human mind is a better simulator than any vidya will probably ever be. My problem is that the medium of vidya is specifically designed for player input producing results. For me, it produces too much dissonance when the game doesn't do what I tell it to, and I have to use my imagination instead. At that point I'd rather play tabletop. In the same way that utilizing the strengths of LARP would mean improving costume design (for example) to the point of seamlessness with the imagined scenario, utilizing the strengths of vidya means using actual fucking vidya mechanics. Maybe it isn't roleplaying, maybe it's some third thing, whatever.

Have you played SS13? I feel like we could communicate better with common ground here.

I've done more role playing in Project Gorgon than any other MMO. I have also seen more people roleplaying in this game percentage wise than other games. I think its because the game has so many different skills that people get into their roles and just become them. For example you can through various means transform into a deer. World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2 remain the only ones I've properly gotten immersed in but I've done some light roleplay on a lot of other MMOs as well.

FFXIV had my interest for a long while but the lore in terms of the actual setting feels very threadbare and lacking. The actual story and plot is better than most MMOs but that doesn't really help from a roleplayer's perspective because it's the setting you're interacting with, not the story set pieces or characters.

Unfortunately that makes up the majority of most RP scenes but it's definitely gotten worse over time.
Dynamic storytelling and the collaborative nature of it is what makes RP in MMOs fun to me but it's difficult to find like-minded players, especially with stuff like instanced player housing becoming more popular and segregating what little in the way of community there is or could be from each other.

I've been an MMO RPer since early Star Wars Galaxies. I was introduced to the concept by a twi'lek played by a mute girl. She would only use the twi'lek lekku language in local chat, because she also made muteness an aspect of her character. I thought that was so cool I became a smuggler just so I could talk to her in character. Lekku is a psychic/manual language if you're wondering.

After SWG I moved on to World of Warcraft where I played an Orc Warlock on Moon Guard. Back in the BC days Horde was fun to play because no one got butthurt of your orc hated fag elves. If you ever played on Moon Guard I guarantee you've heard of my actions or had RP that my storylines affected. I was the catalyst for a lot of the war based rp from 2007 til when Wyrmrest Accord opened. A lot of us ditched Moon Guard and pushed WrA to be more lore abiding, a culture I believe the server still held at least around 2019 or 2020. Also, a lot of us were sick of the drama cows on MG. Sadly, they just made alts on WrA which became the defacto tranny rp server.

After that, I moved on to Star Trek Online, Star Wars TOR, Warhammer Online. Though none quite so engaging or involved as Moon Guard when I was there.

Finally, when Sea of Thieves came out I stayed RPing whith my actual voice in chat. Very fun yelling at some pissed off sweat lord you killed in a pirate voice. Did similar in Red Dead Online.

Now I don't RP at all outside of my little rp headcanons I have for my Star Trek Online bridge officers.

It's also not really a place for RP despite being advertised as such, formerly. It's just a Minecraft clone at this point where people spend thousands of hours on spawning objects and NPCs into their instanced phase without roleplaying in it.

I think this hyperfixation of what the person you're roleplaying with looks like is actually a part of the modern issue where modern people struggle to imagine and disconnect fiction from reality
everyone now doesn't understand that their RPG character is a character they roleplay, as in, y'know, a roleplaying game- an rpg, they think it must represent them irl, that's one of the reasons why sex based stats are getting removed
"but what if im female and the stat i want is on a male?" this didn't used to be a problem, you'd just roleplay a male, but now it's not a role you play anymore, now it must be YOU, so not giving female characters the stat you want is limiting because you can't possibly play a character you don't relate to! and people with this mindset think everyone else is the same way, they see a guy playing a girl and go "reeeee, don't you know he's a guy irl!? aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa stop that stop" and not comprehend how someone can be unbothered by that because they understand it's just a character they're playing, it's pretend, it's like writing a story using yourself as an actor. we used to understand this on the web, it's modern web kids who don't get it.

No. This will never happen. There are "RP servers" in WoW, but if you've played WoW, you know they aren't exclusively about RP. There is at least one private server where you can basically modify whole zones and generate instances yourself, but this is time-consuming, and to me, very boring and uninteresting.

My favorite MMO, SWTOR has a surprising amount of activity, especially from roleplayers who use Discord to coordinate world RP on the server Star Forge.

In WoW, you can find a lot of roleplayers "in the wild" in Orgrimmar (WrA) or Stormwind (MG), but 9/10 times most of the roleplay you will find isn't all that great, for two reasons: most people only have an interest in socializing (which is boring), and if you want anything more than that, you'll need to conceive of roleplaying storylines yourself and find people you can trust enough to run that sort of thing with you.

The problem with roleplaying, generally, as most of this thread will show you, is that most roleplayers have an ego which they enjoy massaging, resulting in situations like this

The solution is really to focus on more insular RP with friends, I think.
