It’s hard to do Arthurian Mythos since it’s one of those things that people know of it but few have really gotten into. It seems they always follow the same cycle of the fall of Camelot but never make their own stuff with it. I mean most of the popular shit came from what was effectively fan fiction. Lancelot was some French Noble’s OC.

There are so many amazing moments in the moment from Arthur pulling the sword from the stone, to being knighted by his enemy who he convinced through his pure spirit that he is of Kingly blood or Percival's entire part in the movie alone. Amazing, there will never be another movie like it because Hollywood won't allow it.

If you don't mind them being post-Arthur, Tainted Grail is a decent roguelike deckbuilder. Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon is a first person RPG that's pretty solid now since they fixed a ton of bugs. King Arthur: Knight's Tale is good if you want a tactics game. Legends of the Round Table isn't out, but seems promising, it also tells the tale of Arthur as opposed to being set after his death. There's a demo out and they've been updating it based on feedback.

He would have existed about a generation after the Roman Empire abandonned Britain, fighting with remnants/descendants of the empire and native britons against the invading saxons. For all its flaws, the film starring Clive Owen is probably the best depiction of "what if Arthur actually existed and there was no magic stuff", where they show things like the last remaining distinctly Roman leaders with wealth and troops fleeing back to the mainland.

I don't know but I once read some jewish woman's fanfic of them where the main character is some random peasant that tags along and half the book is just whimsical contemplations by the narrator of how Arthur was the best of us and Arthur was the kindest of us and how he was the best humanity had to offer. And then he gets cucked. He gets cucked by one of his best friends. And he forgives them. And then his wife, who he treated like a friend gets so remorseful and sad and keeps pestering him into getting back together so they get together again. And then he gets cucked again. And there's a timeskip in the middle of it all where the main character gets cucked by his childhood friend who went to join the druids and had to get her cherry popped by an old druid for some reason. Every mention of Arthur brings to mind that disgusting swill. I wish I could scour memories on demand. I can't even visit /int/ anymore because reading the word SAAR reminds me of knights and by extension Arthur and it just pisses me off. I can't even remember the name or arthur anymore it's just random fragmants of turds floating around in my mind.

>Lancelot was some French Noble’s OC.
You people always act and talk as if these classic legends and myths, were the equivalent to cheap marvel comics, or cheap shueisha manga.
Listen here you cultural illiterate, myths and legends varied according to time and place, which is why myths and legends will differ one from another.
Lancelot is some OC has to be one of the dumbest opinions that is constantly posted on this site, every single time there's a discussion of Arthurian myths, be here or on /lit/ there's always some dude repeating this.
By that logic Mordred/Medraut/Modredus is not the son of Arthur, he's some knight that betrayed Arthur, or some background character. The real enemy of Arthur is Malagant.
Myths and legends are always cultivated differently by region and era, which is why these myths will change. Arthurian myths are inspired by older myths of the welsh, irish, romans and old english people.
This continue to be with all stories, including chivalric, take for example the presence and role of Morgana in the Charlemagne Cycle.
You can like or not like certain characters for being too foreign, just like Tolkien didn't liked more recent Arthurian legends because he considered they weren't fully english. But he would never say something like Lancelot is an OC.
Chretien de Troyes didn't invent the genre of chivalric romance but his works are where they were really perfected and what popularized the genre throughout Europe.

The sheer staggering amount of this shit, (which is about 1500 years worth) that exists is why it's so frustrating nobody has made a game about it, it's incredibly easy to mix and match all of it as you want, add some monsters or elves or whatever you want, take the chivalrous 15th century Lancelot and the hairy-assed barbarian version of Gawaine. Make Merlin a madman with antlers on his head who lives inna woods and goes into prophetic fits and Nimue is a helpful fae sorceress. I don't think people realize how foundational the Arthur stuff is, it definitely deserves as much study as the Greeks get.

I hate these clickbait documentaries that go way too far into proving the historicity of Arthur to the point where they try to find archeological evidence of Camelot. Camelot didn't fucking exist. Chretien came up with it literally just to rhyme with Lancelot. Lancelot was going somewhere. Where was he going? Well he was going to fucking Camelot. That's it.

I've heard interpretations that he was a Briton warlord who lived during the twilight years of the Roman Empire and subsequent angloid invasions. As the petty kings in the east were supplementing their forces with Angles, Jutes and Saxons for their constant skirmishes. Only after outnumbering them to they lose the whole lot in the rolling chaos and Dane Law mandates that followed. He was around when the Picts were still autonomous enough to not be considered on the endangered species list yet.

>And where did he come from? What was his origin?
The Lancelot we all know was written by ChrΓ©tien de Troyes. But reserch on the topic aim at being inspired either "irish figures and heroes", in Spain there's a popular tradition of Lancelot being inspired by a real Spaniard Count, some independent figure that was merged with the Arthurian myths.
>He was some commissioned character by some Frankish nobleman.
How is this suppose to disprove anything. Yes, back then (and still today) writers were commissioned by noblemen and patrons to write tales and stories.
Which is why I'm reaching to this point you are too obtuse to understand, the Arthur you see in certain stories is not the same Arthur you see in others, those stories will add characters and will change their identity.
There's a whole cycle of german arthurian myths which include their own version of Lancelot, Percival and Arthur. Does that make them OC? Of course not, because this is not discussing Araki retconned x from Battle Tendency.

>how is that he was a commissioned OC supposed to disprove that he is not a commissioned OC
This is not even intellectually honest, it wasn't " hey dude make this OC", it was make a story inspired in certain myths and stories. You do know the ancient greek modified existing myths with their own interpretations and characters, right?

Lancelot is the greatest knight because he repented from his sins and went into becoming a monk as a way for redemption, or hunt the sons of Mordred. Similar to how St. Peter became the greatest among the apostles after denying Christ Himself, repenting and leading the Church
If you want the greatest one from a purity perspective that would be Percival/St. John the Apostle. Which ascended to Heaven/was granted by Christ His greatest mysteries and avoided martyrdom.

The Arthurian legend is extremely Medieval. They took a a kernel of history from the stories of Lucius Artorius Castus or whichever Roman and created a Fantasy story with contemporary details and values of Chilvalry, questing and knighthood from the Middle ages.

It is a FANTASY story which is very, very MEDIEVAL. If you always want a historically accurate King Arthur, take out the very concept of knights itself because surprse surprise Knights didn't exist back then. Make Camelot a muddy wooden fort.

This shit being said about the Odyssey is annoying too. It's like telling Tolkien that elves living in trees didn't exist in ancient Britian (which Midde Earth is supposed to be) and making him turn them into Welsh tribals living in mud huts.

This is such a soiboi ummm actually Adam Ruins Everything mindset. If you want historically accurate, stick to historical fiction or biopics. Why force Fantasy stories to scrub off every ounce of magic and beauty in them?
