Master Collection honestly, it has the most content complete version of every game with the Vita exclusive content as well. If you really want the original experience you have to emulate Black and vanilla 2, but I don't know the status of Xbox emulation so maybe its more viable now than it was before.

I've played every single version of Ninja Gaiden apart from vanilla 3, and honestly its not worth getting into the trenches of all the differences between the versions if you're a newcomer. It's a legit mess. The re-release that suffers the most is NG2, because the re-release downgraded enemy encounters and gore to make it run on the PS3, and then every version afterwards kept that, but it also replaced a couple of shitty bosses and added new weapons/characters.

This unironically looks like Platinum's best game in years because Team Ninja's influence seems to be counteracting a lot of the usual Platinum bullshit, most of the gameplay gimmicks look dare I say fun. The grappel hook, platforming and MGR style stealth all seem pretty seamless with the combat and not like some jarring genre change. The only thing that might be a bit sus are the rail grinding sections, but if they're somewhat difficult they might be fun.

The attack Ryu does after a perfect dodge is the last hit of the XX>YYY string from 3RE and I haven't seen that string being used at all.

The stab-into-teleport string (XX>XX in 3RE) can be accessed on demand now. The recovery on your attacks seems to be low enough so you can sorta weave that move into other strings, but there's still some minor delay.

Nah, the secret behind both Nioh and DMC's success is that the gameplay complexity is mostly optional, its rewarding but not forced on you. If it was obligatory 95% of players would drop the game when they faced a boss that demanded you learned a niche mechanic. Also optional mechanics adds flair and personality because people can play in different ways that they like

Most of ryus attacks have felt like that since at least ng3 but the problem started in ng2. It makes ryu feel and play like a spaz. not every string needs so many spastic attacks. You can slow it down a bit and add more weight to the individual hits to make them feel more stubstantial instead of whipping a pool noodle around. Yea it matters if you don’t get it that’s a you problem go play dynasty warriors.

Yeah I've already gone through chapter 1. It was a really fun fight and it was really fun to keep throwing myself at him until I could get the pattern down to use hypercharges without getting damaged.

Well, I admit I can't say for sure since every time I got them I got the required rank first try but the way it looks I get the impression it shows it regardless, and it would just be weird if it didn't since it shows everything else. That said the skin unlock conditions appear to be a mystery ingame but I already got the best one (the Kumori biker one). Very cool game though, I got everything in Normal but wanted to try Hard sooner so I didn't go for S ranks, but that'll be good practice for it for sure. I kind of wish the handicap talismans were just extra options instead since the real ones are fun to play around with and I think Guillotine Charge was almost just a built in mechanic. It messes with ranking incentive a little as well but otherwise the game's awesome and there's a lot to get out of it.

I like the Sekiro grappling shit too, I feel like it's actually used to greater effect than in Sekiro itself. Grappling during boss fights felt more like a "oh yeah we have this mechanic too" than anything of substance, but here every grappling point is an easy dodge into flying swallow.

What separates 3D Ninja Gaiden from the rest of its genre is how it goes about crowd control. No other action game has you balance movement, split-second interactions, and gradual takedowns the way this series does.

I'm afraid that NG4 will copy the 3D NG look, but that there'll be a lot of nuances missing for it to seem "truly" right. Enemies in this clip don't swarm the player. In fact they all just seem to be eating hits for free. And there seems to be a lot of low-commitment, i-frame heavy options to just skirt around choices for free. I know the past NG games weren't the best at balancing but this feels like it's missing the gravitas of the previous games. Not that I blame the talents at PG or anyone in particular for this.

I know we can't know for sure until the game comes out anyway but I just hope that the Platinum mechanics don't sterilize the combat from being "real" Ninja Gaiden which I'm not betting on desu

DMC3 has two massive advantages in that most of its bosses are based on pre-existing characters (Cerberus, Leviathan, etc.) with an interesting spin on them, and they often also give you weapons or abilities that are tied to them Mega Man style.

So fighting Agni & Rudra isn't just a cool ass fight, it's also a cool re-imagining of the nioh and once you beat them you get to use the new swords.

NG generally lacks that since a lot of its bosses are just another new squad of random demons with weird names; although it sometimes does a better job at establishing some of those bosses.

Tempered Gravestone is also such a kino chapter. You get the TDS and then just fight through hordes and hordes of the best enemy types in the entire game, pure ninja violence madness through a dark and destroyed Hayabusa village. Seeing the original areas from NG1 as you trek past where Ryu jumps into the scene in 1 and then beyond into the close forest and out into the field littered with swords everywhere and then the Genshin fight on an active volcano.
Then the last couple chapters after that are just pretty bad unfortunately.

I remember being so excited for NG2 as a kid because of NGB and seeing all the footage with the bodies and the gore, then I played it and didnt understand why I didnt really love it. I knew nothing about games being rushed or having troubled developments but I knew something about the game was "off". During the final archfiend fight the boss just glitched out and I beat him without even trying.
