I think a protagonist like this is necessary if they want to replicate the tension of 1-3. You played as super cops in those, sure, but your actual ability to fight was garbage because of old jank and tank controls. Dealing with extremely small groups of zombies from an angle you didnt expect was tense because aiming was artificially nightmarish if you hadnt ran the game a few times already.

Theyre never going to be gigabased enough to go back to fixed camera, but playing a character who is supposed to be competent but struggles to shoot a single zombie coming at them from a diagonal after they rounded a corner would look stupid as hell. In a game where actions are all supposed to look cinematically real, you need a character who raises their gun slowly and can barely handle recoil if you want 2 zombies to be a challenge. Otherwise you end up with no choice but to throw dozens of zombies + giant flesh beasts at them constantly to create threat. Which makes the game feel like action slop.

This is a cinematic flashback that probably only has gameplay for a few tutorial prompts to establish how to move and open doors, it would be like reading into RE8 level design from Ethan's house. Play 1-4 again.
