Touhou focuses on the brainlet strategy of "just dodge"
Many other shmups use position as a resource.
Many enemies will throw at you impossible patterns so you have to move away, thus being deprived of space.
You're often being backed into a corner in dodonpachi so it's important to know what spawns where to take it out immediately or be in a position where they can't take away much of your space.

The main differemce is that in a lot of other shmups you can manipulate the enemy pattern somewhow, meanwhile touhou has the exact same everytime.
Try to see how many time in a cave game you willingly put yourself in a corner to bait most attaxks on that corner before slowly sliding to the other to waste as little manouver space as possible.

I think there is a decent amount of bullet herding in Touhou. Stage enemy swarms typically make you do it on the reg from stages 4-6 while boss fights in particular like to make you herd bullets while negotiating a danmaku matrix and ambient bullet spam at the same time.

There's generally more gameplay mechanics in 2hu games then there are in CAVE games like DDP though. In OG DDP there's almost nothing. In DoJ onward you have hypers.
Go boot up almost any Touhou extra stage and immediately die when you try to lock in and just weave through the first pattern you face. It's almost always a streaming pattern. Positioning still matters.
Most things in CAVE are aimed so basically everything is streaming and then bouncing up in a U like pattern to redirect bullets. It's not that deep. There's more memo involved sure.

The spin off games like Shoot the Bullet and Fairy Wars tend to have more interesting scoring systems than the mainline games. Scoring in the mainline games generally boils down to 'don't fuck up'

I 1cc'd it yesterday because someone was complaining about it and I wanted to make sure I wasn't remembering wrong, but they give you an opportunity to get like 10 bombs immediately beforehand. I'm playing Shorty who does A LOT of damage but I think most beginners pick Maria, who's option cancels bullets from the side so you can basically skip that retarded turret hallway and basically have full bombs on the boss, which is plenty if you save them to the 2nd phase of his final form, which is the point where you really start needing bombs. Even being a bomb short I was able to bomb through all the phases after that.

Those are either posers who can't play for shit, or people who fell for a meme 20 years ago and are too deep into CAVE hell to change their minds. I can at least tell you that Touhou has some solid games. A lot of the "hate" comes from a desire to stay distant from the fans of the popular thing because shmups outside of Touhou are super niche and hardcore and all that. Try out Mystic Square on the PC-98 for the conclusion to that era, Great Fairy Wars if you want a neat gimmick for around 16 minutes, or Subterranean Animism for more challenging patterns without going overboard like Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (which is still worth a play and may even be fun).
That being said the stages usually are pretty boring, so I get it not being everyone's cup of tea, but I still think Touhou understands bosses more than some other big titles. They have unique themes, their attacks usually represent who they are, and sometimes the final boss will pull out some climactic shit like in PCB.

Damn, that last boss felt like a stage 4 boss.
ZUN has fallen, but then again I guess he fell when he made touhou 14.

Boot up some Batsugun, turn it to Special mode, grind it a bit. Deathsmiles if you want to enter horizontal shmups. Espgaluda or Mushihimesama, your choice but Mushi is deliberately basic to welcome new arcade dudes and it's on Steam. Doesn't make it simple to beat though. If you want to go Steam diving there's Blue Revolver which I really can't recommend enough, very good game with extras to keep skill progression natural. Games like Ketsui or DDP are too damn hard and might simply wall your progression for a while, so as good as they are I wouldn't start with them.

For me, I just 1cc'd the new 2hu game on hard within a couple tries blind, which I usually consider hard to be on par with arcade difficulty to some extent. But I still can't 1cc Ketsui or DoJ after quite a bit of practice. They just require too much memo, plus you get way less resources so the whole run is a lot tighter.
With many Touhou games you can lean harder on the gimmicks and resources showered at you to get a clear.

So I want to install the autobomb patch from Thcrap to play on hard/lunatic. I UNDERSTAND THIS IS CHEATING, my question is:

Is playing hard/lunatic with autobomb less or more disgraceful than playing normal mode with no auto bomb? I can beat all games on normal. Personally I don't like using bombs ever because using bombs means I'm failing the spell card anyway, what I want is to get a bit more challenge from my touhou runs and train more difficult patterns.

What are your opinions on the matter?

It could help you learn those difficulties more if you know the places you certainly want to bomb, but you could also just run through THprac for that which speeds up the grind significantly if you work smarter. I didn't like using bombs either but they're a necessity in every game that has them if you want to survive. With Touhou 8 if you use the default team your deathbomb window is so big it might as well be an autobomb. Definitely learn deathbombs, that should be priority imo.

As a song it's pretty nice, but there's no trumpets or pure loudness like Pure Furies, Necrofantasia or Fate of 60 Years. Keep going to stage 4 and taking intentional game overs in order to unlock stones.
Easiest strategy depends on your character of choice.
Marisa can dominate the game with a combination of Y1 base, R2 or B1 focused shot, G2 unfocused shot, and default assist.
Reimu's easiest strategy is to just pick G1 and spam bombs whenever you feel slightly threatened. If you really want to optimize it go R2 for your assist and maybe pick R1 as your narrow shot if you're not comfortable with the G2 gimmick (keep G2's unfocused shot though because it's really strong). A lot of people swear by Reimu Y1's shots but they're pretty finicky and not really strong outside of boss quick kill setups. I'd compare it to MAlice Cannon in that it's really strong on paper but in practice it's not as game breaking as people make it out to be.

Like Dreamer, it's not too hard and combines elements of Touhou and CAVE so it's a good transitional game to introduce Touhou players to more conventional shmup design.
It also features a primarily female cast of characters and art of questionable aka soulful quality so you'll feel right at home. The dev not bothering to hide his fetish at all aside it's genuinely an excellent shmup.

I love a ton of early Windows tracks myself but it feels tiresome arguing with people who maybe listened to the Stage 6 boss once or twice and made their whole opinion from that.
Not that there isn't some legitimacy to putting more emphasis on boss themes. The highs of a good boss theme, especially in game, are really strong. Shinmy's theme hitting its apex around You Grow Bigger or the tight, cramped feeling of Utsuho's spells as Nuclear Fusion blasts in your ears is really something.
It's a matter of perspective.

The real issue is all the subgenre confusion. 2hu isn't a shmup, it's a dodgemup. The fact that you can shoot is entirely irrelevant, you're there to memorize a bazillion phases of curtain fire until the scripted fight ends. CAVE-likes also aren't shmups, they're scoremups. You're working to autistically gain and maintain combo multipliers for score. You do shoot things to pull this off, but your weapons are very simplistic window dressing. Then you have actual shumps like Gradius, where the focus is on knowing your weapons, when to use which weapon, and maintaining their power level to kill things easier.

Also they're good shmups, but some spellcards are really hardcoded in their nature and your position doesn't really matter, so it becomes like a puzzle where you have to find the best way to get into "safe zones", sometimes you find some where you barely move. My favorite new spellcard is this one actually because it keeps with the game's theme of referencing previous works, and this one has EoSD knives, PCB butterflies, IN stars, SA hearts, UFO pellets, TD arrows, the uh circles? and this game stone rhombuses.

With the newhus, you have the unfortunate taint of the AI controversy which will chill some enthusiasm. However, even without that I think prospects look a little dim for these blokes. Touhou games are a lot more puzzle-like and less reliant on brute forcing the patterns. There is a solution to nearly every spell card in the game. This is a deliberate game design choice that contrasts with the design philosophy of something like the CAVE shooting games.
People who like the faster-paced and less puzzle-focussed gameplay of those games generally don't like touhou.
