Game reccomendations for a zoomer
I am a zoomer asking for good older game recommendations. I like platformers and jrpgs. Dont really enjoy roguelikes or open world type games but ill probably try anything. 2000s maybe to early 2010s, not sure how big of a net to cast so loose rules.
Thank you.

Just play fucking Symphony of the Night, basically everyone who likes Castlevania will tell you that's the best one, it's practically 30 years old now while not being extremely archaic like the first one is, and it might even scratch your jrpg itch a bit since it has a level up and equipment system. I don't know why the other anon would recommend the very first game, not only in the series, but also basically the genre itself.

Final Fantasy 5 is cool, everybody likes the job system a lot in that one. 6 has a better story or at least more interesting characters. 7 is also good but its 3D graphics are kind of shit and take some getting used to.

Megaman Legends is a fantastic game and imo still holds up to this day, though its platforming is a lot less complex than the classic sidescrolling games.

It might be a bit too new for what you're looking for, but Titanfall 2 has easily one of the best FPS campaigns I've ever played, and it has quite a shitload of platforming.

SMT3 Nocturne is a good JRPG but it's punishing, hard, and you'll probably go hours at a time without any real plot developments happening.

If you've never played them you should at least try out Super Mario 64 or Sunshine.

Anon, the best advice I can give you for old games, install a ps2 emulator and just go through crocdb and download everything that looks mildly interesting. Even the shovelware for that console was good to waste some time. You'll probably find that you enjoy every genre but they just all suck now. Also gamecube and xbox. Basically any console from that generation. You guys really don't know how much better things were at the peak and it's cool to see that at least some of you are interested in checking it out. Plus if you hook up an old 1tb HDD you can pretty much fit all the good games from their whole catalogue on it and not have to worry about disk space and disk speed. There are videos on setting the emulators up if you have trouble with it.
Godspeed bro please spread the word among your friends that the games used to be bussin no cap so that more of you stop accepting the slop they usually put out now.

I'll throw some suggestions, not just nostalgia goggles but actually decent games.

Guardian Heroes (sega saturn gem) - unique beat em up with multiple endings, characters, and a great soundtrack. The skeleton knight that helps you can nuke the entire screen. You can beat it in one sitting.

Megaman x4 - was a fun playstation game, haven't tried many others in the series but I heard X was a good one too.

Chrono trigger was already mentioned and you played it, great!

Zelda a link to the past

The first three sonic games, and sonic and knuckles expansion were definitely memory makers for a lot of kids. Great soundtrack

Metal Gear Solid (playstation) was very unique for its time.

Legend of the dragoon (jrpg)

Starcraft 1 and brood war. Real time Strategy with a great soundtrack, voice acting, and decent story. May as well throw in Diablo 2 for the same reasons.

Age of Empires 2. The definitive edition did alright with it. Command and conquer 1, red alert 1 and 2, and tiberian sun are all great. All strategy games with basebuilding. Lets throw in Warhammer Dawn of War because fuck yeah warhammer, and a good way to get into the universe.

OG Halo series (1-3) for your christian scifi mythology fix

Some anons already threw in some good suggestions since you like rpg stuff. There weren't as many good platformers as there are today, i can only think of a handful from an earlier era: vectorman, comix zone, one of the kirby games, that star one created by treasure games, any super mario game.

If you're going to play old games, at least use shaders in Retroarch to mimic a CRT otherwise these games are going to look like hot dogshit. They look quite nice once you do. Retroarch is a bit weird to use at first but once you get the hang of it, it's the best and has the most features, like killing input lag. Watch tutorials if need be in setting it up.

JRPGs: FF1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, Chrono Trigger, DQ 1-5, 8, Lufia II, Earthbound, Suikoden II

Platformers: The Marios, Castlevania 1, 3, Rondo, SotN, Aria, Ninja Gaiden, Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2, Megamans and Megaman X, Super Metroid, Warioland 1-4, Kirby's Dream Land, Sonic 1-3 + Sonic & Knuckles, Revenge Of Shinobi

Other misc great games: Most of the Zeldas, LTTP, Ocarina to start. Resident Evil 1-4, Silent Hill 1-3, Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud 2, Banjo Kazooie, Streets Of Rage 1 and 2, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, F-Zero, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, LotR TT and Rotk, Warioware, Harvest Moon, Gunstar Heroes, Parasite Eve, Paper Mario 64, Star Fox 64

There's no guarantee OP intends to play even a single game in this thread and its odd how desperate "boomers" are to groom the younger generation into retards. To me, there is no value in discussing a game I already discussed to death 20 years ago with someone who only understands it on a superficial level anyways. It is more valuable to me for people to play new games. You can play 1000 old games, but you'll have less value to me than someone who went on the new releases page on steam and downloaded a random game.

is not argument as to why they are bad or shouldn't be included
just like
>normieslop

JRPGs and platformers are things I never played back then since I just played PC games and they didn't seem particularly popular on the platform, so I'm just going to rattle out a bunch of games I loved in the 2000-2010 period, simply in the order in which they come to mind.

Warcraft 3
Half Life 2 (1 as well but it's before 2000)
C&C Red Alert 2
C&C Generals
C&C 3
VTMB: Bloodlines
GTA: San Andreas
GTA: Vice City
SW: Knights of the Old Republic (1 & 2)
Quake 3 Arena
Unreal Tournament 2004
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 (1 is amazing too, but it's older an 2 basically has everything 1 has)
Guild Wars
World of Warcraft (I played up to The Burning Crusade)
Diablo 2 (1 as well, but it's older)
Mass Effect series (3 is after 2010 and kinda the worst in the series)
Dragon Age (only the first)
Battlezone 2 (1 is also good, but before 2000)
Rise of Nations
Heroes of Might and Magic 5
NFS: Underground 1 & 2
Team Fortress 2
Portal
Ballance
Doom 3 (not as good as the classics, but I really liked it as a teen)
Serious Sam series
Dawn of War
Left 4 Dead
The Witcher
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (the entire related trilogy is alright)
BloodRayne
Empire Earth
Neverwinter Nights 2
Dungeon Siege
FEAR
SpaceChem (not sure whether this was pre-2010 or slightly after)

I can probably spit out more games if I think about it longer, I probably forgot some good shit too, but that's a pretty wide selection of games and genres already I'd say. You can probably find something enjoyable from the time period.

The very first thing I would do, if I was a clueless newfag, would be to set up GZdoom immediately. This is something everyone with PC should have. OpenRCT2 is okay to fuck around in as a sandbox if you want to build rollercoasters from hell, but honestly OpenTTD is far better and an actual video game about logistics and maximizing efficient throughput through industry chains, and if you like that you can wrap back around into modern games and play factorio.

FF1 is rough and requires grind. The early DQ games are like FF1, they are more jrpg'y so you may not like but idk. Try FF6 or Chrono. The grind in those games is basically non-existent and are heavy on story, unlike FF1. Lufia 2 has zero random encounters, monsters walk on the map and the game has crazy puzzles. Very fun game. Paper Mario for 64 is great. Not very hard or anything but just comfy and a good time. Kingdom Hearts can be a bit cringe with the Disney stuff but underneath it is a solid Squaresoft game.

Thats a neat list, i see you removed some games like Ultima 5, Red Alert 2 and Jagged Alliance 2. And if i remember you had Path of Exile 2 instead of 1.

I wonder how your list looked like lets say 10 years ago, would be interesting to see.

Anyway i will treat this as a recommendation list, if you don't mind i want you to tell me which games i should play from your list if i want games with good level design, atmosphere and freedom to play. for example i see a lot of platformers in your list and while i enjoy some of them i tend to not care that much about them, just overall not my type or those anime games either. But i see some games that i never played and i may buy them if you recommend them to me.

Here's the games i liked from your list.

>Portal
>Stalker
>Deus Ex
>Serious Sam
>Souls
>Thief
>Sekiro
>Resident Evil Remastered
>Baldurs Gate 3

Firstly, if you haven't, go play community Doom wads. Sunlust, Scythe 2, Speed of Doom, Ancient Aliens, Plutonia 2, 10x10, Overboard, Golden Souls, Going Down, etc. There are too many people who say they like doom and haven't really played it. Secondly, and I keep saying this again and again, people need to play different genres. The brain is elastic, if you don't use it then it will become brittle, stiff, and unable to enjoy things. Its wrong to look at games like "I enjoyed this game, what are other games like it", anyone can easily figure that out themselves and trying to chase identical highs arbitrarily is a grave error. Rather, you should be looking at genres you don't play and figuring out how to get into them. For example, Unity of Command 2 is a good entry point into wargames, touhou is a good entry into shmups, etc. The more genres you play, the higher the likelihood there is that there will be something new for you to get excited about.

Wow thats a list of Doom mods that i missed, i enjoyed playing the games but i never thought about downloading mods or alternative versions. I will definitely try those.

I do play different genres, but over the years i found i have a preference for certain ones. like i enjoyed Super Mario Galaxy games and i liked a hat in time and ori games, but i never found a platformer that made me enjoy gaming as much as other genres like roleplaying, fps and horror.
Maybe you are correct that i didn't play the best ones from those genres yet, but im now at an age that i have little time and while money is not an issue i still dont like spending money on games that turn out to be disappointing.

RCT is just a very well-made game. I suppose at its core it's like most building games, it's free-form to a large degree and the fun comes from the satisfaction of building something cool and beautiful that also works well in the game's systems. The game has a crazy amount of rides and attractions, it has beautiful music and beautiful, charming, highly detailed graphics. It's cool to make a rollercoaster which gets high ratings, then constantly has a full queue and prints money for you, or synced dueling coasters, 'secret' park areas only reachable through underground tunnels (loved these as a kid), rides that stretch throughout the entire park and intertwine with everything else you built, little areas that serve no purpose other than looking aesthetic and pretty much everything you can imagine. It's a beautiful game with amazing atmosphere and it gives you a lot of freedom.

The different scenarios and levels are also, as far as I remember, pretty decent at giving you different objectives and challenges to beat that make you play the game differently. It's not all pure sandbox.

>I didnt really like fallouts open world roaming style so I never really followed through with mass effect
They're not significantly alike. I tried Fallout 3 and dropped it quickly as well. I always thought Bethesda's open-world games are largely bland and shallow, thought that's not a very popular opinion. Didn't play 1 & 2 at all, not for any reason, they just passed me by. Mass Effect isn't much like Fallout 3, it's not a huge open world or anything like that, you just fly your space ship to different planets or space stations and such, it's a lot more focused than Bethesda open-world games.
