I'll throw some suggestions, not just nostalgia goggles but actually decent games.
Guardian Heroes (sega saturn gem) - unique beat em up with multiple endings, characters, and a great soundtrack. The skeleton knight that helps you can nuke the entire screen. You can beat it in one sitting.
Megaman x4 - was a fun playstation game, haven't tried many others in the series but I heard X was a good one too.
Chrono trigger was already mentioned and you played it, great!
Zelda a link to the past
The first three sonic games, and sonic and knuckles expansion were definitely memory makers for a lot of kids. Great soundtrack
Metal Gear Solid (playstation) was very unique for its time.
Legend of the dragoon (jrpg)
Starcraft 1 and brood war. Real time Strategy with a great soundtrack, voice acting, and decent story. May as well throw in Diablo 2 for the same reasons.
Age of Empires 2. The definitive edition did alright with it. Command and conquer 1, red alert 1 and 2, and tiberian sun are all great. All strategy games with basebuilding. Lets throw in Warhammer Dawn of War because fuck yeah warhammer, and a good way to get into the universe.
OG Halo series (1-3) for your christian scifi mythology fix
Some anons already threw in some good suggestions since you like rpg stuff. There weren't as many good platformers as there are today, i can only think of a handful from an earlier era: vectorman, comix zone, one of the kirby games, that star one created by treasure games, any super mario game.
