Chrono Trigger is not even in my top 100, its a dreadfully boring game. Most of this is really bad actually. MGS isn't even a video game, it's a movie, which is pretty much an ongoing theme here. The most popular games are those lacking in gameplay and most accessible, which isn't surprising. Did you watch Cinderella Gray? It's pretty good. Personally I don't see how it's different from watching Gundam then buying gunpla. All Japanese IPs are merchandised like this. The things square enix does is 1000 times worse. Also, the horses are very easy to get. I have 22 different horses and have not spent a single cent. If the game, and the franchise as a whole, is fun, then what's the problem? Cygames made a neat game about Japanese history and one of the biggest modern prestige anime studios as well, with a popular seinen manga and a ton of merchandise. It's undoubtedly otaku culture.
