Half of the genuine criticism of contemporary RPGs is the open world slop. There isn't really much of an argument when devs and open world plebs doesn't even acknowledge that there is a trade-off being design wise. It really is a dividing line between normies and enthusiasts.

It's fine to enjoy open world, but themepark-design is basically equivalent of soap television where you're just getting more, but low quality stuff. When one talk about good writing or filmmaking you usually talk about how effective or efficient it is. Open world sensibilities, where Rockstars red dead redemption perhaps the best example to date. They literally just say that they outright the open world for what it is and justify trough "it's a different kind of game". It's like they say, when a company starts holding themselves to their own standards (Bethesda comes to mind), that's when it's circling the drain.

Which is why Gothic holds up so well. Just by being a focused RPG, like so many other classics it ages really well. Far Cry 2 was perhaps the last game to actually try and deal with the central open world issue without retorting to lazy fast travel.

I don't think people with talent even exist anymore. Gothic was made by a small team of people. Gothic 2 was made by a small team in 1 year.
You right now have all the tools. You could make a game like Gothic without having to make your own engine from scratch and with much better hardware and software so you can really speed up the process. But no one can do it. The closest thing was the Chronicles of Myrtana people but for them it takes 6+ years to make a Gothic game while using 99% assets that were already made.

As much as Witcher 3 is slop, it genuinely is the last open world RPG I have enjoyed where I actually bothered listening to dialogue, reading lore notes and got immersed even in the side quests.
Nowadays I skim read dialogue as I skip, skim read important lore notes for clues if it even is necessary and I just rush the main quest because side quests are just pointless time wasters.

It's just a waste of time. Why should I be walking in circles when the more challenging part is to do my objective? Exploration is fucking boring. Mouse support was literally patched in.
