Offset is a good mechanic though, as you can use a lot more of the movelist now when there are many enemies on screen rather than when there are only 1 or 2 left for the longer combos. It also takes skill to dodge and continue a combo when there are that many enemies on screen, there's a ton of defensive options that are way safer to do in NG than pulling off a longer combo that is offset by a dodge now.
Game also has more advanced offsets like the game keeping your place in a combo on the ground if you OT as say your 2nd heavy hit, then when you press Y again immediately after you finish your OT the 3rd hit of the combo chain will come out rather than restart.
It's the kind of mechanic that fits very well in NG, especially since 2 because the enemies got more numerous and the combo list also got way bigger with way longer combos.

Dodge offsetting and enemies being able to get out of your combos already destroys the fundamental values of Ninja gaiden. Don't get me wrong I hate NG2 I think it's mediocre trash.
The entire idea of combo strings is to try and guarantee a kill by exposing yourself. You HAVE to expose yourself if you want to finish a long string but that long string will usually kill something.
If you can dodge offset combos the idea of combo strings in the whole gameplay flow ceases to be important.
Just like enemies can get out of block stun in the air of all things.

Adaptive AI is also a gigantic problem. Master Ninja AI is harder by default, it doesn't need to grow or weaken depending on your performance. The consistency of their behavior is enough and enemies are designed with an archetype in mind.

Only Vergil is dressing kinda weird but that's because he's designed to contrast with Dante. Meanwhile you look at Dante and Nero in DMC4 and their designs have a dozen zippers and belts and decals.

Same thing with the enemy designs which are way toned down from the previous and posterior games in terms of horror content. Just compare Bloodgoyle to Gladius to Hellbat for an example. DMC4 was absolutely different. It was closer to visual-kei than the urban fantasy of the rest of the series.

As somebody that like DMC, Platinum's action games, and NG, I think 4 is going to be a very good action game. The combat already looks really good and I like the speed they're adding to it. Ninja are supposed to go fast so the increased speed fits really well here. I can understand why some NG purists might not be keen on 4 though, I definitely do see a lot of Platinum influence so some of their anger is probably justified. My main annoyance is the lack of Ryu weapons and missions but the combat looks too fun to pass up. Also Yakumo is going to take some getting used to. Maybe he'll be a likeable guy once I actually play it so we'll see how it goes.

I just bough NG2B and I just played for like an hour, but it feels clunky as hell. Like I have very little control on what Ryu does when I'm fighting. Is this just a matter of getting used to things, or does it get better when I unlock more moves?

For example, I just beat Stellar Blade and never felt like this. I know they're different games. This is my first Ninja Gaiden.
