Deltarune has legitimately the most generous demo a game has ever gotten with the first two chapters being completely free. There's no reason not to give it a shot unless it's because you want to try undertale first (undertale's demo is kinda shit so just pirate the full game).

I expected it from the beginning. I like the side characters and play the game for them mainly. Tenna was cool and Gerson was the best depiction of a mentor figure I've seen in a game. Tobys strange obsession with Yuri really is a detriment to his games and it feels more forced than ever in Deltarune with Noelle and Susie, but at least chapter 4 was great.

It's actually a really good game, but the "game" aspect of it is lacking compared to other RPGs. (It's a bit lacking for a bullet hell too, but there are some really high points.) People usually play it for literally everything else about it, ie the story, the characters, the music, the cool pixel art, etc.

Deltarune is mainly about the 'role playing" aspect of "role playing game" rather than the "game" aspect. So instead of focusing on stats and levels, you're focusing on what the characters are doing and what you're going to do in response. I think that's what makes the game great and elevates above many other RPGs. Nobody plays DND for the dice rolls and math, they play for the interactive adventure. RPGs are best when they do the same.

truth nuke: undertale (the game in isolation) does not exceed a strong 6 - light 7 on a "critical" rating. im not sure about deltarune since i havent played since chapter 1 but i would rate chapter 1 a little better.

this is as generous as ill be. ill list off a couple likes and dislikes so you can trust that im not seething and came to a proper conclusion

undertale likes:

1. battle system is creative in most aspects, with each major battle incorporating something new
2. music is pretty good, nothing playlist worthy imo but amplifies the moods of each part
3. worldbuilding is good (only if you really look for it though)

undertale dislikes:

1. the gimmicks with each boss fight should've been introduced before each boss
2. the game sort of pushes its own morality rather than having a morality system.
3. realistically you will literally never get the genocide or pacifist ending naturally (remember, this is the game in isolation) and the worldbuilding takes a huge hit as a result

So I just played OFF. v3, not the remaster.
It was... okay. I guess I can pat myself on the back for predicting the "The Switch is OFF" wordplay from the switches earlier in the game.
I feel like if I was a teenager who got this game for free in the 2000s it might be a lot more interesting. But as it is, I felt like it was a little less than the sum of its parts.
I see where there are some influencing factors on Deltarune, of course. But, the thing I consistently find about Toby Fox's inspirations, is that he is not just regurgitating stuff. He takes those ideas and finds, IN MY OPINION, a much more interesting and substantial way to execute it.
The soundtrack for OFF was also not what I expected. There is definitely some good tracks but not quite in the way Toby Fox makes music. This soundtrack was stronger for its horror/discordant elements. That said, few if any tracks stood out to me as something I'd want to listen to again on YouTube or something. The only track that felt core to the game's identity, and iconic, was the normal battle theme. Besides that, I think that if the remaster's new music captures the same *feelings for the situation* that the original tracks did, then the remaster is probably just fine as an experience for first time players.

The real issue is that the true pacifist route is so easy to find. The game clearly expects you to get stuck trying to find a way to save Asgore and get the best ending but it's so obvious what you are meant to do it's hard to get more than 2-3 replays out of the game.
