Nope! Too complex and the war management sim was so ass it made me quit several times.

Owlcat writing is way too wordy and the combat is just prebuff for 10 minutes before every fight or do zero damage.

I played kingmaker with a barb that has a smilodon. It was a nice animal, I was allowed to accompany it, while it adventured alone through the wilderness and teared anything that moved to bloody shreds within seconds. I wish I could helped, but the smilodon was finished, before my dwarfen barbarian could ever get there in time.

Same, I pretty much only use toybox to insta skip the crusader shit and to completely respec some characters for fun/build experimenting I know you can set crusader mode to automatic so you don't have to deal with it but you miss out on rewards if you do.
I'm really surprised they just didn't include a automatic buffing system since Kingmaker also had the same issue with buffing.
I really like the game otherwise though, it's probably the best adaptation of a D20 system onto a CRPG.

Might be because I played chaos but it felt underbaked in a lot of ways and didn't feel like it sold the fantasy of the three main play styles as well as WotR sold the fantasy of the mythic paths. There were the trap paths like gold dragon but a lot of them do a good job of recontextualizing the rest of the game and giving you a slightly more personalized framework for your adventure. Whereas I didn't feel that in RT, and I compared notes with a friend that finished as a loyalist and 99% of everything was the same except there were a couple pieces of semi-interesting story background fluff that was revealed unique to our runs. I still enjoyed playing RT and they did a fantastic job on their 40k fluff but as a game and a whole production it didn't feel like you controlled the story as well as in WotR which was a big downer for me. Then there's the stuff like your character origin coming up once, in the tutorial, over the entire run of the game, then you start fondly thinking about all that flavor text you got as (mythic path) in WotR

Early game as an arcane spellcaster can be miserable. I don't think deity choice matters all that much, but Desna and Iomedae are plot-relevant. For that you should pick whichever sounds more appealing in roleplay terms.

Well that's not what happened at all.
Hasbro/WotC was being cocky at the time and saying they'll Larian all the time they want for when they'd want to do a sequel or DLC for BG3.
Larian started brainstorming ideas, then decided they didn't want to do DnD anymore, especially after Hasbro/WotC laid off a shit ton of people at WotC, including people who collaborated with Larian to make BG3.
Hasbro/WotC are now trying to find anyone who could make a BG4, saying "of course they're going to make a sequel to BG3"

my most recent run had Azata magic deceiver MC
by the end of act 3 my 5 party members were just cheerleaders, and I no longer needed to buff aside from occasionally having my grenadier use 24/h alchemist buffs like death ward
they were just there to watch me aoe 1 tap mob packs which with the azata spell refund gave me around 50~ uses per rest
only mobs that couldn't be 1 tapped were optional side bosses and I had the other 5 characters setup to take care of those
having MC just built to delete all trash packs really speeds up the game pace, I've done a few runs and play on core and by far my strongest

Like Icewind Dale 1, it's largely story-lite, and entirely dependent on you specifically enjoying Infinity Engine style combat.
It's only point going for it beyond that is that it's 3rd edition (not 3.5).
If you do decide to play it, there's a fan made "Enhanced Edition" that helps a lot (since the original source code is completely lost, so an official non-mod release can't really be made one without starting from scratch)

It's a good RPG. In my opinion, the Camellia romance is among the best ones in any game, simply because it's interesting and unique. WotR has some serious flaws, though, like terrible encounter design. I played through the game on core difficulty and after the early levels, boss fights and the like only had meaning for their story and music, they failed at the tactical level.

For example, I just one shot Nocticula (I was playing Demon) and that was that. What was an epic moment just deflated. Same happened to all other bosses. I played dual wielding Titan fighter, and if I got a full round attack, it just one shot supposed demon lords. Pretty anticlimactic. This is one aspect that Larian does far better, namely making combat encounters tactically interesting. WotR has of course the far more interesting character building. This is something Owlcat has improved on, as Rogue Trader has better combat encounters, IMO.

It's up there. Hard to really claim the top spot when the competition excells at the things it messes up, or fails at the things it failed at. BG3 is also excellent but they both have a really shit final act. I like the numbers autism more in WotR and BG3 annoys me too much with having to roll for shit you functionally cannot fail (like picking a lock when you can only fail on a 3 or lower and you have 200 lockpicks)

WotR's setting is more interesting and the story is more engaging, BG3 meanders too much in act one, where you learn very early on that the parasite cannot be removed, but doing the rest of act 1 is still all in pursuit of a cure you (the player, if not the character) know cannot actually be there, so you spend the vast majority of act 1 making zero narrative progress. The exploration and leveling and all is still great fun but WotR does a good job of that too, and doesn't have such atrocious pacing.

Companions in both are a mixed bag. WotR has stupid shit like Nenio and babies' first edgelord, BG3's endgame was so broken I wasn't sure what personality its characters were supposed to even have anymore.

I absolutely love the idea of merging a cRPG with a grand strategy/empire building game, like that is made specifically for me, but I think the homm format however you call it wasn't the best decision. I mean, I've taken almost the whole map by now and due to how hospitals work I haven't taken a single casualty. It certainly doesn't feel like a war.

I think that a simple Knights of Honor 1 or really basic Total War blueprint would be perfect, but that would probably be a lot more time consuming and expensive to develop

It's pretty good, but it's definitely not the "untouchable god-GOAT" that some grognards like to pretend it is.
It's quite poorly balanced - some class combinations are just so much better than everything else, that not playing them is just actively gimping yourself. Combat encounters mostly bounce between you slaughtering any kind of martial enemies by right clicking in their general direction and tedious mage duels (more so if you have mods like spell revisions installed). Unlike the first game, it gets extremely linear after you go to Spellhold. Some of the companions were clearly designers' pets, while others basically have no purpose except doing their personal quests and then discarding them by the wayside. Very fucky scripting bugs are still present 20 years after the game first came out (again, more so if you want to use mods).
Overall, though, it still delivers the feeling of an epic adventure much better than BG3 (which kinda devolves into a parody of itself by act 3), especially if you play all the way from BG1 to the end of Throne of Bhaal with the same character.

Personally, I'd rate it about the same as WOTR - it's better in some aspects than that game, but worse in others (but then again, I don't pop blood vessels when I see black paladins, so your mileage may vary).

The writing is boring, companions are all generic and boring, the main antagonist has a really lame reason for doing what she did, pre-buffing on core+ gets tiring and makes combat boring and formulaic (either you get wiped immediately or the enemies do), grinding the crusade minigame in order to unlock new areas of the world map is a dreadful slog, save and load times get longer as you get deeper into the game because Unity is a shitty engine, etc.

It's a 6/10 game that I forced myself to finish and I don't understand how this game has such rabid fans. I waited for the game to get good and it never did. It legitimately feels like a Russian bootleg of BG 1/2. At least it has a great soundtrack. That was easily the high point of the game.
