I really don't get this. What is constraining them? They're making a brand new anime based on a 6 year old game. Anime has to animate longer sequences than most video games and composite it with 2D animation. Tricky stuff in general, particularly the latter. You'd almost have to rotoscope the 3D to get it to ever look right.
The best 3D anime are all 3D, like Studio Orange's series (Land of the Lustrous, Trigun: Stampede, Leviathan). Where that compositing doesn't have to be done.
