A big world to explore that is Hollow Nest.
Like how in Dark Souls the first time playing you stumble upon Ash Lake.
With Hollowknight you eventually stumble upon the deep nest or ancient basin.
The charm is the exploration and coming across these things for your first time after fighting your way through.

Sure the game has charms, but other than that the upgrades that make big changes are somewhat far apart iirc.
Usually in a metroidvania you first get an upgrade that changes how you fight before fighting a certain boss. Hollow Knight takes the souls approach where you usually just keep fighting the boss.
The progression of the stuff that you unlock such as the movement abilities is more like that of a platformer.
Idk it's hard to explain but the game is more like an amalgamation of souls, platformer and metroidvania. Rather it than being a pure metroidvania.
It's a great game and I enjoyed my time with it.

Yeah, you can even just set the dream gate to right outside the house, go through the path to God Seeker killing every single thing, teleport back and then go through the route you made. Super Easy, no problems, no spikes in the way to fucking ruin it for you and no tricky jumps across pits. God Seeker is the easiest one to give it to, even without killing everything. Path of Pain was awesome. I remember going through the White Palace that first time in 2017. It was the first time that I realized how slow my reflexes had become. Then in 2019 I played again and heard about the optional path added for that lore, so I went through it. God, just realizing that they wanted you to climb up using those void beetles for the first part, that was killer. I think I found the shortcut you can take with Crystal Dash by accident.

Knew it would eventually come out and it looks great, you can see the improvements over Hollow Knight in almost all clips of gameplay. More fluid animation, higher amount of particle effects, varied combat, in game cutscenes that are more then just a character moving slightly. It does, you don't make the gate at the end, you make it at the start. You go to the start, kill down the path you want to take, teleport back, get the flower and then take the path without resting at a bench. This is the best way to do it in "one shot" if you are closer to the Grey Mourner. If you feel better walking back to the Grey Mourner from God Seeker, you can just cut out the warp and do the path in reverse the first time.

The dream it infects was ALL dreams, of every bug in Hallownest. Some bugs just learned how to ignore the Radiance, this is easier for bugs that were already closer to "Higher Beings"/Gods
Void is not good, but it is also not evil, it has no will of its own, it just lashes out at anything
Radiance is only mad that it was forgotten when the Pale King came after the Radiance had the White Wyrm killed and thrown into Kingdom's Edge. If the Moth tribe had continued to worship it, instead of following after the Pale King, this wouldn't have happened.
Radiance was in the dream because its physical body had died, killed by the Pale King and the five Great Knights. Normally beings that have died can only influence the dream, but if you have the Dream Nail or are a strong enough being, you can manifest in the physical. But the Radiance was weak, because it wasn't being actively worshiped anymore, thus people were forgetting it. So it tried to return worship to itself by infecting the dreams of Hallownest. To prevent this from leading to the collapse of the nation, the King made the Hollow Knight, using it to draw the Radiance into a being that could not be controlled, for it had no mind. Unfortunately, their Pure Vessel had an idea instilled in it, that it was a savior. It gained a mind, even if it was but a sliver, but this was enough for the Radiance to control after a time, so the infection would spread again as the Radiance could jump from the Hollow Knight's dream to others.

nta but the radiance is a big moth god that stopped being worshipped when hallownest was in its prime, thru magic it entered the minds of bugs and tried to enslave them with subliminal messaging but it removes their sapience (like how bugs attack u in game like zombies). the king responded by making vessels, explicitly incapable of thought or emotion, to fully contain the radiance inside of them and be immune to its influence. THK is the first vessel thought to be flawless at that. it contained it for a while but started to fail at the time of the game because it was in fact capable of thought. you deal with the second wave of infection by either killing THK and taking its place as a vessel, or enter its mind and kill the radiance itself.

Prior to the pale king the bugs were mostly mindless. The infection is essentially them returning to this state, but probably in a more extreme and destructive way. The radiance is locked in dreams because the pale king drove her out/killed her so that all that was left of her were lingering memories within dreams. The story doesn't really deal much with good or bad. The radiance and the void are practically forces of nature.

Eh, it isn't like getting the map meant much of anything. I think about half way through the game, I just stopped checking the map entirely. I was moving through rooms too fast to think about it. 90% of the time Cornifer was on the way through the area. The only places where he is easy to miss are the Royal Waterways, Kingdom's Edge and Queen's Gardens. This is only a problem for Deepnest if you happen to get really deep into it and get to the Hotspring. Everywhere else, I would be shocked if you couldn't find your way out or even just into the next area. I know a few people that did the whole of Fungal Caverns without finding him because they went up instead of down, but the Caverns are so straight forwards in getting to City of Tears it doesn't really matter.
Tell you what though, I do agree that you should at least be able to make your own if you don't find the map. I think that Shaka will be more active then Cornifer, so will probably be missed less.
