Look, popularity is good for measuring popularity. That's about it. I don't know if it's a gen z or alpha thing or what, but the obsession with follower counts, views, etc to the point of feeling INVESTED in overall player trends. Even for singleplayer games? Shit is weird. I think it genuinely damages discourse, it's just another form of social media saturation that they can't seem to get away from. I feel bad for kids/college kids who had to grow up in this. It also feels like a lot of people who just got access to the internet in developing countries obsess over this type of thing too.
