I tried FFXIV (Free Trial), picked Marauder, found it immensely boring.
Is this the game by nature? Or just the early levels? Or the class?...
Lots of my friends play this game and LOVE it.
Appreciate some thoughts.

Most classes seem simple, it isn't until you unlock their respective Job at level 30 do you start to get the good stuff, and most people say it isn't until 50 that you learn the stuff you will come to associate as a core ability of the job.

It honestly depends on how far you get into it.

If it's the gameplay itself that you find boring, then yeah. That is the game from start to finish.

If it's the story itself that isn't keeping you engaged, that's kind of the point. FF14's entire base story basically had to be retconned and redone from scratch since it was such a horrible fucking mess upon release. This leaves the first 30-40 or so levels practically a drag for most newer players. But once the story does indeed find its feet, it happens to become a very good story (or at least until Endwalker)

The early levels are rough, up to 50-60 minimum for most classes, then at that point you start getting the skeleton of a rotation going and it starts getting a little more interesting/involving. But ultimately even later in levels the gameplay still comes down to your boring bog-standard tab targeting shit that if you aren't distracted by the conjunction of job meter management and enemy encounter DDR mechanics enough to realize just how boring the gameplay loop really is, you'll burn out fast.
So if some other element of the game like its story isn't grabbing you (I'd at least give it until Heavensword), coming from a place of genuineness, you should save yourself the time sink and drop it.

Yes, the early levels are super shitty. It wasn't always this bad though because the level cap used to be 50 at the beginning, so you got access to your full kit a lot earlier. That hasn't been the case in a while, so it's extra boring these days.

Low levels suck, break up the monotony doing side shit like trying other jobs/roles gathering or gold saucer. If none of that and the story doesn't interest you just find something else to do with your time.
Marauder is probably also one of the least interesting jobs as well unless you like the feeling of healing to full as a tank and soloing shit.

Yes, that is the game. You get more buttons to press later on, but all either do damage or reduce damage. If you made it to the first dungeon, then congratulation, you've experienced every dungeon in the game, the latter will just have a different coat of paint. You either play FFXIV for the story or don't play it all.

Honestly just try shit out and see what you like they're all pretty boring at the start but the system let's you catch up in levels pretty fast on other jobs.
Like most anons said too shits pretty dry before 50 but you'll get a basic idea of how your class will play by 30-40.
Deep dungeon in particular is a good place to try out jobs as well but I think while they're still classes you'll be missing a lot of key abilities.

Yeah. Im just going to echo what's been said so far. Gameplay is the basic MMORPG tab-target gameplay. It's been done, redone, and redone, but at this point you simply can not re-create the wheel. It is what it is. But that isn't the main drive of the game, as many anons have already said. Heavensward is where FF14 takes off into it's own. Characters become far more fleshed out, the story begins to finally coalesce, character interactions actually begin to make a lot more sense, history begins to be explained about why the world is the way it is, and from that point the game become a storytelling titan.

But if you aren't willing to wait, and if it is taking too much time for you to make any significant progress due to real life shit getting in the way, or if you're just that impatient then I doubt that any reasonable person would fault you for dropping it wherever you are now. I'd suggest sticking with it, I think it's a phenominal story and has one of (if not the) best antagonists in a video game I've seen in the past 20 years. The kind where they won't fight you. They'll walk with you, be cordial, try to get to know you, and even be incredibly friendly even though they see you as their adversary just to try and get you to see their side of things or to explain it in terms that ultimately you can not deny outright.

Give it some time if you can, drop it if you can't. I'd personally prefer the former since it worthwhile to experience.

Early game is incredibly boring, late game... only slightly less so, the gameplay doesn't change a whole lot. All things considered this is a pretty terrible MMO since there isn't a whole lot to do outside of the main story (100s of hours of single player content) and 8-man raids (an acquired taste).
Keep playing the free trial until Heavensward I'd say, that's when the jobs and story start to get slightly more engaging. If you don't vibe with the game then I'd drop it.

I did the same thing as you OP. Started free trial with a friend, picked marauder. We got to like level 20 and then I dropped the game for several months.

Then I came back to the game solo and ended up putting 2000+ hours into it as well as meeting my wife from it. Game is good when you ain't got a bitch in your ear telling you how shit it is.

Why is Warrior the only tank that actually gets to do something before level 80? Warrior feels complete at 56 when it gets Raw Intuition, everything else is just extra after that. Yeah they would be a bit more risky but you'd still be able to solo and also do it faster, it'd just be dungeon ques which can be a pain in the ass as a dps but that's up to you if you wanna play a dull un-killable tank or something more interesting like Ninja with mudras.
Albeit you should figure out on your own what you like playing around I'd say try out a few jobs and see what you like.
I doubt you'd struggle anywhere in the story though considering it's made for healer players to be able to beat it.

Jobs in the game take a very long time to feel complete. Low level kits are completely gutted to make room for the higher level ones. Also the MSQ duties are very boring and non-threatening for a very long time, especially early on aw they are not tuned for current role traits. Real game happens in extreme/savage. I dislike FFXIV but not really. Low levels really suck. At max level you do have a lot more abilities. The real issue is there is no way to actually react to anything. The abilities are all chained together in a sequence called a rotation that you never deviate from. So it's extremely boring in general even at max level. You'll fall asleep doing certain raids because you just feel like you're going through the motions of rotations.

Cosmic Exploration is a worse version of Ishgard Restoration that doesn't even serve as a useful tool for leveling crafting/gathering, it even sapped up additional resources that Diadem being reused didn't, and it will unironically end the expansion with more content than the adventure foray.

Aiming at the story is the Bingo Free Space, low hanging fruit, the very easiest of catches. 7.3 ending similarly to 7.0? No, I don't need to discuss that, that's the extra stuff everyone already has talked about, it's unnecessary. I would have given 7.3 a solid thumbs up before that point and it ended with mere indifference instead.

As far as leveling was concerned, even post Penta nerf DRG simply needed to be their own party leaders. If you mean endgame then yeah, sometimes one job is better than another for a boss, and it helps the group if you pivot to that job.
