Are there any modern games that still embrace the old school heavy metal fantasy aesthetic? I want giant axes, chainmail bikinis, grotesque monsters, flaming skulls, and generally relentless violence and sex.

The only way you'd get something like this again is when it sets out to be for a very specific and niche audience. Fantasy in general is in very rough shape. You either have stuff in the vein of Harry Potter or you have ultra gritty and "realistic" Game of Thrones stuff. There's no room for stories about a simple man walking around in his underwear fucking babes and killing monsters.

That used to be the American kind of fantasy, based on the US pulp novels and comics. Now fantasy in US is created by millennial women who think all fiction needs to be therapy.
There are many reasons and explanations for the shift, but one major one is that men as a demographic generally have kinda checked out from recreational literature as a media both as creators and consumers, so there has not been new generations of male fantasy authors.

Conan is still copyrighted, but it is bit of a clustered clusterfuck where various media rights are fractured and there is not a singular one Conan owner. It should have lapsed into public domain already like Lovecraft's work has, but the IP holder kikery still keeps it under copyright because the waters are a bit muddly about how Howard's estate was handled and by how Sprague de Camp contributed to early Hyboria.
Anonymous No.719709760 [Report] >>719709996

Everything Howard wrote is free of rights, things written by other people later isn't. So you can use everything from his stories, but if you bring bikini chainmail Red Sonja or Tulsa Doom from the movie instead from Kull's tales, you have a copyright problem.
In short, make sure to read Howard's Conan before writing your Conan tale. Or make it so out there you're safe.

Yes, REH's works on the character are all excellent; pastiche is a mixed bag that shouldn't be delved into until you've read REH's works in full. For pastiche, Camp and Carter wrote a fair amount that are okay and rewrote and edited REH's works for the worse, but it's easy to find the original versions of his stories now. John Maddox Roberts, John C. Hocking, and Robert Jordan blow their works out of the way. There are others like Nyberg and Paul Anderson that are worth your time as well, but none do Conan better than REH did.

No. I've been thinking about that lately too, how cool it would be to have an RPG with that aesthetic, but I don't think there's been one since like 1992 (Ishar series). I think current game companies are simply too dickless, both figuratively and literally, to do it justice. You need a LOT of testosterone to do it without feeling the need to apologize for it or turn it into a parody. Also you need the ability to disregard review scores because the current games media will rake you on hot coals for making something, anything, that 100% aims itself at male players.

Wizards being evil and/or insane tends to be a staple of the sub-genre. Thundarr the Barbarian has a sorceress in the main trio. It is a post-apocalyptic story where the world has devolved into sword & sorcery barbarism after a global societal collapse, so it is not everyone's cup of tea thematically. The 80s cartoon is fun, and Dynamite Comics is currently doing a comic book revival.

I miss fantasy. Not necessarily the wizards and fireballs kind but the creative kind, the one you'd see on pulp covers or in paintings where an artist asked "what if there was a kingdom on the moon?" or under the sea or in another dimension. "Popular culture" doesn't mean whatever shit came out most recently. It means the picture most people have in their minds when they think of the characters.
The real Conan is the Conan from Marvel comics and Vallejo/Frazetta art because that's how most of humanity pictures him. Maybe 1% of Conan fans have ever read a single thing by Howard.

Those cumbrains can't make anything decent without going full porn, so much they end up making most of the outfits too clean. From about the 40s to 70s you get some pretty good pulpy man-focused novellas and short stories. Things like Travis McGee. If you’re into sexualized Nazi fanfic, Israel had a thriving market for BDSM pulp with hot Nazi women set during the Holohoax.

I actually went through the conan stories last year, and it's a mix of both

he couldn't always take on any enemy with just his brawn....however he was FUCKING RIDICULOUS with his physical exploits, like in Beyond the Black River and The Slithering Shadow he kills demons whilst unarmed.
I'm struggling to remember which story it was now, but I remember in one Conan is trapped in a location with a wizard who is down a hallway gloating that Conan won;t be able to run at him to kill him with his axe before the wizard can cast a spell, so Conan throws the axe at lightning speed with perfect accuracy to hit the wizard from dozens of feet away, that is NUTS levels of skill and strength

I did really like how sneaky Conan could be though, his thief aspect wasn't well represented in the films

There's no way there's that many mods monitoring that many threads at the same time so it's either some automated AI shit or the castrated normalfaggots/women/zoomers that this site has been infested with over the last few years are really smashing that report button often enough for mods to notice it faster. Slaine meeting William Wallace was pretty cool too.
There's a deep sense of nostalgia in the stories of Slaine. It's like seeing the last phoenix bird fly away, or a legendary elf having his last stand against the world.

Liam Sharp recently released his own Conan comic, for Titan Comics if I'm not mistaken. And speaking of Barry, BWS is THE Conan artist. which leads me to mention that Titan Comics are releasing old Conan volumes, and they are also releasing new stories.
It's a good time to be a Conan fan or a REH fan in general, we are getting another Solomon Kane mini-series and a comic about Steve Costigan.

It is quite playable though. I managed and Morrowind is my GOAT. Barely any NPCs, barely any quests (except getting that bracelet off), whole land for you alone to explore, and build your own shitbrick palace. You can enslave people, and with recent patch, thralls walk around your shitbrick palace and do stuff too. It has a LOT of lore, some VERY nice places, and a very neat overarching story of the land, and some neat stuff too (they did add a bunch of free stuff, so you have saucery too). And the only DLC you ever need is Debaucheries of Derketo (nice bed and curtains, tree-building kit, and actually nice outfits).
Get it when its on discount, and then play singleplayer - it allows that.

>It's a good time to be a Conan fan
I've been saying for years now that we need another run at Conan movies. Hear me out.
We get Arnold's boy, the mexican one (Joseph), to be Conan. He's a spitting image of Dad and he's yoked.
5 movies, one every 2 years. Put $250m towards it, but start small. First movie do it for like $20-$30m. Film it in butt-fuck Spain or Italy like they used to. Adapt the stories. Nothing original. ADAPT. First film can be something really easy like Tower of the Elephant. Make it like 80min. Who cares for 3 hour films. Just get it done and show it can be done. Then keep growing the films in scope and scale as you go. By the time you get to film No.5 you do the big daddy, Hour of the Dragon. Joseph is like late 30s by then, so he's aged with the role. Hour of the Dragon can be your 200min epic and drop like $100m on it.
Every film is R-rated. It's an adult property. Make it adult.

Up to you, but here's mine. The tabbed out lines are flexible changes. Of note,
>all progress is default
>harvest rates default
>combat rates are default (consider raising Thrall Damage Given if you want to use pets)
>PVP enabled but time-restricted to 0 minutes (turns off friendly fire, but you can enable it in-game (by turning time-restrict off) without having to restart the server if you want FF back on, such as for triggering thrall eating during training)
>3x mult on corruption gain (makes corrupt ruins more hazardous, gives value to dancers and anti-corruption potions, also makes playing as a sorcerer more bearable)
>Spoil rate: half (for QOL, but since egg hatching uses the decay system, be prepared to flip it around, or just leave it at 1.0x)
>Land Claim: 0.33x (helps prevent your base from making resources despawn)
>Crafting Time: 0.1x or 0.2x (respects your time)
>Thrall Crafting Time: 0.1x or 0.2x (same, but it does invalidate the purpose of multi-slave wheels. I'm more prone to leaving this default, esp. after the devs reduced default T4 rate from 24H to 1H, further reduced by taskmasters)
>Build Anywhere (this setting is to prevent online griefing, you don't need it in SP)
>Creative Mode: Everyone (so you can enable it without hassle in case some janky bullshit happens, without needing to go through admin again)
>Animal Pen Crafting Time: 0.1x (same reason as thrall, but this also affects pet item crafting, so it's also worthwhile to just leave at default 1.0x)
As a reminder, you can change settings anytime in-game by going into settings and enabling admin mode. But to disable admin mode after, you need to open the console (the `~ key) and type MakeMeNormal.

it's a really great game if you want to build a cool bronze age palace and have a harem of buxom slave women you can fuck (with mods, of course).
as others have said, though, some of the worst combat ever. The weapons and armors are cool as shit, but in a kind of LARP way. It's fun arming your thralls and posing them in various ways. I have an army of basicbitch conscripts with really light bronze armor and iron spears, but then I have an entourage of warriors with unique armors tailored for their cultures and combat roles.

I'd done a shortlist of who I think could helm the project, but can't find it. I think it was;
>Directors: Richard Stanley (unlikely, but I think he would be the one to do it justice), or Jordan Vogt-Roberts (more likely to do it, )
>Writers: Alex Garland or Mike Flanagan.

I played about 40 hours online with strangers and 60 hours with friends. The rest is singleplayer, typically modded but nothing necessary (armor and customization mods).

My final take is that it is best played is singelplayer. PVP is worth trying out a bit, but official servers are ass and so are their ban policies, while private servers have the usual admin problems.

It's a sandbox survival-building-crafting RPG. Beside PVP, the only use of online is showing off the things you've built to others. The content is balanced around solo play (a player + a thrall), and it has a vague main quest to pursue as a final goal. Finishing the quest ends your character, so that also gives the game a definitive ending where you can say you beat the game and move on.

As a new player, most of your time will likely be figuring out where new resources are to progress and following the Journeys. Eventually you'll stumble across the main quest and bosses and figure out what you need to do to finish the game. Until then, it's all about carving out your own slice of the world, building up your base, populating your base with pets and thralls, and exploring the world. Once you feel confident you've seen just about all the game offers, just finish the main quest.

I like Eggers a lot, I just don't think he's the right guy for Conan. His visual flair is outstanding, but it isn't what I'd expect for Sword & Sorcery.
Richard Stanley was my pick cause he's old school. He hates Hollywood, so I think he'd be unlikely to fall for the traps and conventions of modern cinema. His take on Colour Out of Space was totally brilliant. Loved it. I could see him having a vision for Conan while paying total respects to the source material.
Vogt-Roberts I think is an underrated and underutilized director. He's also refreshingly honest and critical of his own works. Say what you will about Kong: Skull Island, but the good bits were fucking great. The bad bits he's fully admitted were a combination of his own failings and not being strong enough to stand against studio meddling.

I think that's cause it's the easy road to take. If you wanted to adapt Conan, you'd need stealth sections, talking/social sections, combat sections, narrative sections (either branching or linear). It's a lot of work. You'd be making Ubi-slop if you're not careful.
Someone like old-CDPR could do it. Not sure about the current studio line-up. But the guys who did Witcher 2 could have pulled off Conan.

It's not super new, but Arcane made a game called Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. It has muscles, tits, ass, armor, weapons, magic, succubi, and everything I thought the future of gaming was going to be (and everything I wanted it to be) back when I played it. Just deeper RPG systems and a big more nonlinear design and more to explore and do and boom it's perfect .... but I say that as someone that's played that game to death and just wants more.

Age of Conan is an MMO, even has the tits. It's old and in a completely abandoned state, good luck even signing up to play it.

Conan Exiles is a survival game also abandoned by the devs and basically a cash shop at this point but the base game has the aesthetic you're looking for.

Really badly optimized. It's simultaneously better and worse than the first game, depending on which aspects you're talking about. Some aspects of the combat are just better (greater variety of possibilities the creatures do more things and behave in even better ways, etc). Others are worse (monster variety). Some things are debatable like everyone having less active skills now except the warrior who technically gets upgraded by one active skill.

It's hit and miss. One of the biggest misses is there's no Dark Arisen equivalent, no deep dungeon, no endless dungeon where you can just play the most fun part of the game (the combat) over and over in quick succession without masses of land travel between notable encounters.

Nah. You're putting more thought into it than Frazetta did, broski. His Tarzan paintings and drawings are the exact same guy in loincloths and fur as his Conan ones. He just had a style he liked to draw no matter what the content he's supposedly drawing for that very obviously influenced the pop culture idea of what Conan was despite not being what he was in the stories.
I mean, for fuck's sake, look at this. This is supposed to be Eowyn fighting the Witch-King. Reminder that she was fully armored and disguised as a man in the actual book.

My theory is that realistic graphics, realism as an artstyle and high visual fidelity in general are the cause of this.
Developers look out their downtown windows and anything they can't see there cannot be put into the game OR they can't put it into the game since something obviously not real looks out of place with all the other premade realistic assets.

In any case, Queen of the Black Coast is in the first collection. If you seriously think Conan wasn't banging the pirate queen between every scene when she was topless dervish dancing over him the first time they met, you're a fucking idiot. Likewise with the ending of Iron Shadows in the Moon, the story ends with the half naked former slave lady giving in to Conan's passion when he was busy sucking her face.

Just saying, the best stories we have seem to be written by people with incredible backgrounds, often full of hardship and struggle and variety.
>Edgar Rice Burroughs: Son of Civil War Vet, Military College graduate, prospector/miner, cowboy, pilot, war-correspondent.
>Robert E Howard: Son of a Physician, grew up fighting every day of his life, saw horrible mining/farming accidents regularly, boxer, weightlifter.
>HP Lovecraft: Son of a mental patient (possibly syphilis), raised by aunts, taught literary horror by his grandfather, beset from a young age by terrible nightmares (night terrors), started writing poems at age 7, family broke and destitute by age 10 (suicidal), suffered nervous collapses all through his teens.
>Mary Shelley: Daughter of a feminist philosopher, mother died at a young age, father went to debtor's prison, no formal education, used to fuck in graveyards, traveled from France to Switzerland by donkey during The War of Liberation, miscarried her first child (haunted by nightmares of her dead child ever since).

Not really. The people who that aesthetic appeals to the most tend to be idea guys without the resources to make games in that style. Also if something that looks 'old school' pops up, you can expect it to be so irony poisoned that they may as well not have bothered. Or they'll be painfully self conscious and try to jazz it up to make it stand out in some egregious, stupid way. Or it'll be more of a retro throwback to some NES game that incidentally includes generic 'old school fantasy' designs. It's a pity because there's no reason there couldn't be something good like that out there. But even if there were, it would only take one good game coming out to start a fucking bandwagon that crashes within two or three months because it's harder to get it right than it looks, and one of the prerequisite qualities is, you can't make it if you're a pussy, which is everyone now.
