If you don't make something like that, you'll inevitably have to cut a shit ton of moments from the show.

IIRC, there was a SoL manga that was basically the little segment toward the end of NGE made into its own series, one where Shinji is a detective or something, NGE2 for PS2 is its own thing, there was a novel or novels that did an alternate timeline thing where the Evas basically become Gundams or something. Then you of course also have the NGE manga and the Rebuilds doing their own thing.

You don't even need to watch the movie, the SEELE members revealed the name of their objective and it gets constantly talked about throughout the show, I started rewatching evangelion this week and was really surprised to see that the most important parts and themes of the show get revealed extremely early on (hedgehog's dilemma is first mentioned in episode 03 and is then the title of episode 04 for example), makes me wonder how so many people failed to get it.

the reason most of the stuff that came after the original series + eoe sucked is because a conclusion on the original topic is reached by the end of those works and all the shit that comes after is unnecessary and irrelevant. that's not to say it's inherently bad but it needs to exist on its own merits and most of it fails to do so.

the same applies to the games, most of the games are just exploring setting and doing mech shit in a series that wasn't really built for that. it could work if done well, but most of it isn't.

some of the dating sims work because the purpose of a dating sim is to exist as wish fulfillment for otaku. most eva fans already like at least one of the girls so making a product built around exploring relationships with the girls is exactly what the audience wants. it's not high art but it's a good product that caters to the audience's demands.

I say this as a fan, I don't think Eva would make for a very good action game. Most of the angels are very gimmicky to the point the N64 game was basically a collection of minigames. Each loop is a NG+ with new possible ending. Angels also time loops, so they get stronger and react to Shinji/Nerv. ALA edge of tomorrow style. The first NG+ ending Shinji ends up with Misato, since she's probably the easiest. True end is harem end.

First of all, NGE itself is a loose retelling of Nadia, which is a retelling of Laputa. Anno didn't come up with everything on the spot. He's not actually a good story writer.

Second of all, Rebuild abandons its actual plot line at the end in favor of a meta-narrative message, virtually erasing the whole story and presenting you with an ending that has nothing new to say even without the constraints of said story.

Actually, the whole "white giant of light at the South Pole" part is lifted from Edgar Allan Poe's "Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym". The whole premise of the series (~coming of age/coming to terms with reality as a young person story in a sci-fi world with religious symbolism, as well as the whole "global peace vs individuality") reminded me of Childhood's End. It is unfortunate that people only talk about other anime/manga that have influenced EVA, but not other works, particularly western literature.
