They're braindead mechanically and pulpy trash narratively, but they get hailed as masterpieces by insecure shlubs who want to feel like they're participating in a culture of fine art when they play games instead of enjoying a children's hobby.

The last of us has the most braindead stealth gameplay imaginable yet people who don't really play a lot of games love to say that it revolutionized stealth gaming. Bioshock infinite has a story that's worse-written than the average greentext, yet when it came out people called it a deep meaningful political treatise and a literary masterpiece about class and race and quantum mechanics, even though it's utter slop (its metacritic average is even higher than expedition 33's). Expedition 33 doesn't have a single encounter in the entire game in which the devs were able to design any strategic challenge. The only thing they do, no matter the encounter or enemy, is give you a QTE with a new rhythm in which to press the parry button. If you make use of your pictos/lumina, you can shorten the amount of times you have to deal with the QTEs, but that's the only agency you have as a player. There's not a single encounter in the main quest of the game that poses any actual strategic challenge that's memorable. It's just all QTEs because the devs are ubisoft hacks who don't know how to make any interesting challenge whatsoever. The story is airport novel slop made by someone who thinks "artists can sink into their art to cope with life" is a novel innovative concept for deep thinkers. Of course in reality it's one of the most popular concepts in all of media that's been done over and over time and time again to great success with mass audiences. Inception for instance was a film about artists sinking into their creations to cope with loss that made like $850 million nearly a decade and a half ago, well over a billion today adjusted for inflation, and won like 4 Oscars.

Hades 2 is a 95 average. that doesn't happen all the time anymore and it's leaps and bounds ahead of the other two, the only game this year that's gotten 10s from IGN, gamespot, as well as eurogamer, the most influential outlets, whereas silksong and e33 both got 9s. the only time such a big upset happened was when God of War (94 MC) beat RDR2 (97 MC).

And for the "sequels don't win retards", Astrobot won despite half the game's levels being repeated from the VR Astro game. TLOU2 was a sequel that didn't change anything about its gameplay. Witcher 3 was a sequel. Baldur's Gate 3 was a sequel. The ONLY times that a highly reviewed iterative sequel was nominated and lost were when Ragnarok lost to Elden Ring and TOTK lost to BG3. Elden Ring and BG3 were never going to lose to anything else, and if they hadn't come out in their respective years, no game could've competed with Ragnarok for its year or with TOTK for its year (no, not even Alan Wake 2). The "hurrdurr muh sequels don't win" thing is the biggest cope of all.

I can't say it was the case for every voter, but I know at least two of the people on the voting panel basically said on a podcast they were going to vote for Astro Bot because of the message it says to the industry and specifically Sony, that being about not having to make massive AAA inflated blockbuster titles all the time (this was probably especially influenced by Concord's failure earlier in the year).
Also one thing I found funny about that podcast, one of those voters, without outright saying it (though making it very obvious), they had clearly had Shadow of the Erdtree as their primary nomination and been completely blindsided by the backlash the nomination received, and after spending 5 minutes of the podcast trying to defend and justify its nomination despite being DLC basically conceded it was a bad choice and made it clear they wouldn't put their final vote in for it.
