I play NG games since 2008 and bought the series X exclusively just for NG2.

NG4 is garbage, I played it and dropped it. It's crap, it's a platinum game, not itagaki blood.
Koei can go to hell. Just make Nioh games and forget about NG, the studies doesn't have what it takes to make a decent NG nor does platinum shit games.

dmc5 was my first action game and I loved it on release put in 70 hours clearing it on DMD doing gimmicky runs like only guns against DMD vergil but how the fuck do people hold it in such high regards?
Played dmc3 later and it was so much better then played ninja gaiden and realized just how bad dmc5 is. The gameplay is so slow that you need to CE it for it to be playable. Let's not even talk on how you can't choose what character you want in missions

In regards to parries and blocking...
I was having trouble with the timing of perfect blocks and parries. It seemed random and it didn't matter how well I timed it. Then I just had an idea that fighting games have lock framerates to 60. So I limited my FPS to 60 and turned vsync on (which is usually an awful idea because it causes input lag) but now I am able to parry and perfect block consistently. Anyone else? Am I weird? I would try 120FPS with vsync too but I don't think my rig is strong enough to have constant 120+

I unironically like it more than my original NG2 playthrough but NG2 had some of the worst bosses in videogames and people gush over the enemy bloat but I actually didn’t like it when I played it and many times I just kept saying “fucking seriously” ready to move on. I feel like 4 gets it just right and then bosses are way better, although the fiend bosses and Genshin in 2 were really good also.

I know you’re probably baiting but I somewhat agree. I don’t hate this game as much as you, but I’m not really feeling it either. I’m in the drowned district now and the lack on environmental variety is starting to get to me. It’s mostly styling and doing cuhrazee combos in ugly combat arenas against spongey enemies. It reminds me more of a DMC game (especially V) than an Itagaki era NG game. I doubt I’ll replay this once I finish my current hard playthrough. Platinum somehow made me appreciate Razor’s Edge more. It can always get worse.

It’s the worst in the series. So many reused assets everywhere. Remember how Black and 2 constantly had memorable environments with great art direction? Don’t expect any of that here. Yes, don't listen to people who say NG is "nothing" like DMC, they're both visceral action games, if you like DMC there's a 90% chance you'll like NG. If you play DMC for the characters and story NG definitely isn't as focused on those things though. If you don't have an Xbox Master Collection is what you get, still fun games, and you can go back and play Black and vanilla 2 later if you end up liking it

How many items? I could have done this in a quarter of the deaths if I knuckled under and used a resurrection item when the boss was at 25% health remaining in phase 2 and I whiffed a blood raven interrupt.

I also sort of wonder how much harder hard mode really is. As it stands you can basically tank 4 good hits before you die on normal... if everything did 20% more damage on hard, you'd be able to tank... 4 good hits before you died on hard.

I like NG4's camera EXCEPT that the game disables mouse control when controller input is active. I wish so desperately that I could get mouselook to work, so I could actually move my camera quickly and precisely. You can play automata on hard and the only hard parts are the flight gear sections because you get OHKO'd. Automata is still a game where holding pot shot is something you should never NOT be doing, and there's no reason not to frantically press R2 as hard and fast as you can the instant you see that red "here comes the attack" gleam. Between that and "just equip the healing items and they apply themselves", which is another perennial favorite of his for some fucking reason, I beat all 5 endings on Hard and I don't think I ever actually learned a single boss' attack patterns all game.

It's weird how much staying power Vanquish still seems to have in the age of Ultrakill and the first two Doom reboots. I will say, I think Vanquish gets specific points for being third person, it's a lot easier to do cool looking shit when you can see more than your hands. You should also bite down and try Warframe sometime, that game is stylish as hell, even if it is a god awful skinner box.

Still, I think Ultrakill is about more than just "good shooting", it has rocket sliding, air dashing, grappling hook navigation, wall jumps, ground slams, and a heavy focus on parrying. It also has an actual COMBO system since most of the interesting mechanics come from the way weapons interact with one another. It's like sniping your grenade in Vanquish, times a million

The punch out minigame was the best part of TW101. You can make your jokes but I guarantee you the high-level play meta for NG4 is way more diverse than TW101. You'll get players who emphasize crowd control and good UT chaining, players who rely on perfect dodge/parry/block and counters, players who use juggles with cancel tech to avoid danger and are good at blood raven interrupting, players who use mobility to navigate fights tactically picking off enemies in order of importance... there are a lot of different ways to be good at NG4.

Why is getting ranks in this game so hard?
In NG2 I easily got Head and Master Ninja for almost all chapters on my first playthrough and even on my mentor playthrough, but in NG4 I've only gotten head ninja once, and I'm on normal.
Not that I'm complaining, the game does a decent job of making me care more about the scoring compared to previous games.

Not to that degree, but certain strings have specific parts of it that have high delimb rates, so with Dodge Offset you can get to it even while dodging. In 2 you always wanted to go for high delimb and short duration specifically, most of the longer strings you unlocked were kind of worthless because delimb->OT is the name of the game, it wasn't about damage.
You can also stop weapon switching from resetting your string with dodge offset if you switch while holding dodge, and you can go for specific parts of a Bloodraven string while only spending the meter for the one hit you want. So here >>723920430 this launcher is usually (BR) XY, but since the air X after the jump back XXY already counts as the first X, I dodge offset into BR Y and get the launcher spending less meter.
It's more situational than something you want to do every single time, but it's useful.

Yeah, usually when I see people weapon switching during combos it just looks like baby's first DMC combo, but the higher effort version of weapon switching mid combo is dodge offsetting into it to get a specific hit or finisher from a different weapon. Japanese games have always been console games and that's where the audience for various action games, RPGs, and pretty much all Japanese games really developed. It is true that PC has become bigger nowadays but I still don't believe that all of the audience is on PC now. NG fans are generally older and a lot of older gamers are still more likely to have an attachment to physical media and consoles. I get the feeling that sales of NG4 are more fragmented across both consoles and PC if anything. I could be wrong of course but I still use consoles and I grew up playing Japanese games and that's still all I really play. There's no reason for single player games to have high concurrent player counts in most cases either, it released on a Tuesday and it's not like people are getting friend groups together to all play a single player game like they would for a new multi-player release. The game may have indeed bombed or maybe it did okay but we should at least give it a week or two.

Did some quick testing to figure it out, just like you can cancel strings into guillotine throw, you can also cancel into wind path. But here's the thing, you can input wind path backwards, and you won't jump over the enemy and swallow into the distance. You also won't do a reverse wind path, nothing will happen, but the game will register an Enemy Step nonetheless, resetting your air inputs, and you can Flying Swallow.
So in this webm, the input is XYXX backA forwardY. Do it quickly and you'll be able to cancel your combo into Flying Swallow.

Only played a half hour, but the combat seemed really floaty and weedy. There's no impact, and the sound effects are really subdued too.

Enemies in the previous games didn't mangetize to you as hard when they perform an attack. Since you move twice as fast they made it so enemies can easily lunge at you like with those staff enemies that just keep swinging like there's no tomorrow

My only problem so far are bosses. I’ll die to them 4 times in a row and then out of nowhere just wreck the shit out of them. My lack of inconsistency is killing me so much that I have to go for a walk and smoke.
