The combat encounters which makes up the majority of gameplay have to be the most retarded things I've ever seen. Basically they boil down to
>kill x amount of enemies
>doesn't matter which enemies you kill, you just have to kill x amount
>the second you kill an enemy they respawn and they all keep respawning until you hit that kill count at which point they all just instantly disappear
I don't even know how you fuck up that bad when it comes to game design. It goes against all common sense. Any need to prioritize threats goes out the window because anything you kill just instantly comes back at full health. There's no point in even trying to kill bigger enemies because even if you do kill them they instantly come right back and as long as you hit the kill requirement they're just going to instantly disappear anyway. Ultimately it turns every fight into just killing the weakest enemies on the field over and over again because they're the easiest ones to kill and the only ones you actually need to kill.

I wouldn't recommend Earthbound. It's too dated. Admittedly, it has a lot of elements I do like. I love the art style, the music, the creativity in enemy designs and settings, those moments when you find sanctuaries, the culminating point during the final boss battle, and its trademark quirkiness and charm. I also appreciate it for the influence it's had. But still, the problems it has are just too stark to be a good gameplay experience. The chief one is that the the core gameplay loop gets very tedious and boring. The battle system is a complete miss. It's just your regular RPG one with a small gimmick thrown in on top. All the characters are one-dimensional and boring. I don't find the plot engaging, except for a few brilliant moments. It's way too long for the amount of tedium it makes you experience.

Even if you put the DEI shit aside this shit still kind of sucks. Devs wanted to make a top down Terraria but clearly didn't understand what made Terraria work. Every biome just feels the same but with different enemies and different rocks. If you look at Terraria, every biome was truly different, not just in the types of enemies or items you encountered, but also in terms of terrain generation. Here, just about everything is the same. Once you're underground every cave is just a cave, doesn't matter if it's in the desert, plains, forest, swamp, or snow. The only thing that changes is the color of the rocks, the enemies, and maybe one or two structures unique to that biome's cave system you find.
Also the fact that they boast about infinite sized worlds is laughable. Who gives a fuck about how big the worlds are if it's all more of the same five biomes? If anything, that just adds to the tedium because you might have to cross hundreds of miles just to move between a couple of your different settlements.

Due to the way the game is set-up, you'll be constantly backtracking across this huge map..
You are stuck with a tag-a-long like the first game, but he never-ever shuts up.
None of your choices meaningfully effect anything.
Its the same supernatural force as the first game, so the mystery element is non-existent if you've played the first game.

The biggest fault is that the story is simply uninteresting, by the end compounding boredom and annoyance had obliterated any semblance of immersion and investment I might have had..

What isn't fixable is the later level design. Late game it's just floating small rocks and basically just hopping from rock to rock with no real variance other than "this rock hurts you if you land on it".
The final climb was a massive chore though. That wasn't fun or a challenge it was just a chore.

Awful dungeon design, awful UI (in a genre where bad UI is often a given, this was particularly bad), and boring combat. The pleasant visual design seems to be the only real draw. I didn't find the story worth writing home about. I cannot speak to Galleria or whatever its sequel is called, I didn't want to try it after the bad taste Coven of Dusk left in my mouth.

This game is probably the most tedious fucking game I have ever played in my life. I beat it a single time when I went into it completely blind and it took me about 30 hours and holy fuck was it so not worth it. The idea seems cool: Having to manage a bunch of different moving parts while simultaneously trying to figure out what the fuck you should be doing; but in practice it's actually very very dull and generally has you repeating the same motions over and over just to hope the game randomly gives you what you need to progress. Also the OST fucking sucks because all of the songs just repeat over and over until you're literally so sick of them you turn the music off.

End game is even fucking worse because dread builds pretty quick considering you're just constantly reading books and summoning shit so you can explore tougher and tougher challenges; your entire run could just end because of a single bad dread timing. The game forces you to also manage money and work for SOME fucking reason even though you're leading a cult of like 20 people who would gladly die for you, but having them give you money is apparently not in the cards. Which means you need to waste your work slot endlessly grinding money instead of actually progressing the game, because you also need money to buy more books to progress. Terrible, terrible system.

Didn't play any of the DLC and never will because I doubt it will be any better.

it's kind of hard cause i like a couple of the things this game does and i did have fun but the negatives are starting to really outweigh the positives

>enemy variety blows, each chapter only introduces one new type of enemy (and usually it's just recolors of the previous chapter's boss because for some reason they wanted a puzzle and dragons type chart, it's literally the same) and there's only really 2-3 unique enemy formations for that chapter, elemental enemies also barely differ aside from maybe one attack that uses said element

Paradise Killer is awful.
The basic gameplay is you run around gathering clues and at any point you want you can go to the courtroom to make your case. Which sounds cool, maybe, except there's also a journal that points you to leads you haven't finished exploring. So either you intentionally end the game early ignoring the glowing text that you're missing stuff, or you keep following the glowing text until you've got everything... and now the case is brain-dead trivial because I guess it was designed around maybe the player missing some clues. The courtroom is supposed to be the most exciting place in a detective game! Not rubber-stamping busywork.
Also the fast travel costs a finite non-renewable resource. Also you're part of the evil faction, but your dialogue options sometimes forget to give you an evil option.
On the other hand the worldbuilding is genuinely 10/10 so there's that. And after beating the game you can shoot any character you don't like which is nice.

I heard the negative buzz around this game but figured people were just being babies about fixed camera angles, but these seriously are the worst camera angles in any game ever maybe. Is it supposed to be a hard game? I played it for a while early this year but I found it pretty boring. Core Keeper. It's a top down Terraria knockoff where you have almost no inventory space and everything has durability that wears down extremely quickly. Resources to repair stuff are absolutely everywhere so it serves no purpose besides annoying you and being tedious. There is an absurd amount of item bloat, with many being completely redundant or pointless (a billion different weapons that are functionally identical and have worse stats than the Slime Sword you get within 20 minutes of starting the game for killing the first boss, literally over 1000 different cooking recipes but 900 of them are redundant and have the exact same overlapping buffs cancelling each other out). This compliments the lack of inventory space VERY well. I timed myself to see how fast it takes to fill my inventory during an expedition once and it was 72 seconds.

There are lite Factorio elements where you can automate with robotic arms and conveyors, which makes resources even more trivial. The game has an annoying hunger meter that runs out way too fast and does nothing except give you a small buff when almost full, and drains your health when empty. It's pointless since you can get literally 1000+ mushrooms within the first half an hour of the game, and make automated mushroom farms that produce infinite amounts of them very early on, plus enemies regularly drop food too and you can fish in 1x1 water block for infinite food too.

Combat is what you'd expect from a top down game, but it's largely a joke. I have, from random drops alone, an axe that twoshots every non boss enemy in the game and has a massive amount of range, and a staff that calls down meteor strikes that kills everything, sets it on fire AND poisons it. Bosses are extremely easy, especially if you actually bother engaging with the rpg aspect of the game - I applied 8 different buffs from food before the last boss I fought, got him to his second phase in 3 hits, and killed him un 18 seconds total while not getting hit once.

Probably Bravely Default. It's supposed to be a spiritual successor to FFV, but it ends up feeling much more restrictive and grindy. Stats and abilities are tied to job levels. You can't just use higher level magic you have if you, for example, switch to black mage AND you'll hit like a wet noodle unless you bother to level up the job. Abilities also don't give stats unlike FFV. You can't have a white mage punch things for any decent damage even if you equip the right abilites since their strength is low. You can't have a black mage with decent healing even if you equip white magic since you don't get the wisdom to make it worth it. Blue magic(vampire) is gotten way too late in the game for it to be fun. Bosses are "harder" in that there are fewer ways to beat them creatively. There are still overpowered strategies. You can abuse certain jobs to make yourself invincible, gain a lot more turns, and do loads of damage, but it doesn't feel like you have a lot of room for strategies that aren't generally strong. There's also an end game slog where you have to beat the bosses you've already beaten several times in a time loop.

Persona 5. Have never been able to finish the first castle without burning out. So tedious.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2. A sequel that took everything that was great about the original game and threw it out the window. Plenty of people have lampooned the juvenile writing, but that could have been forgiven if the game had actually been solid mechanically, however it was a complete mess on that part as well. The combat was dumbed down to mostly spamming QTEs and following an extremely linear elemental combo as your skill selection is very limited, hell you don't even fully unlock all the mechanics until like 80% into the game and at that point the game has long overstayed its welcome and you just want it to end. The game can't even fall back on its exploration being a strong suit as exploration is extremely disincentivized as they decided to populate aggressive over-leveled enemies off the beaten path with little to no reward for going there as most of your power is gated behind progressing the story. The zones are also much less impressive compared to the previous games and turn completely linear towards the end.
Then there is the awful ass blade gacha (in a single played game by the way) and field skills being tied to them. Good luck getting a proper team grinded out (and god forbid you want to actually get all of them) and backtracking for their skills and even after you manage all that the constant swapping around your loadout constantly to use their field skills.
Oh yeah and you can't jump in combat anymore because they must have fired all the competent devs.
There's probably more, but I've tried to block out my memories of the awful experience I had with the game. As it just feels insulting to call it a sequel when it's so clearly insulting to everything the previous game did.

It's one of those games that look charming but are too tedious to complete

Fire Emblem Three Houses sorta grew on me during my first playthrough but by the time it did I was 45 hours in and sorta realizing all of my beef with it in better detail.

Guild Wars 1. Holy shit did my friend hype it up but it is a slow, boring, grind of a game where you just kill trash mobs to collect garbage to trade for gear to kill more trash mobs. He spent so long hyping up the story but I have never seen such a directionless schizo paste of random popular tropes from the early 2000's just thrown together without any plan. I fucking tried to force myself through it for hours just to entertain them since they offered to play with me but I had to call it quits after we cleared the first part of the game and killed the Lich.

He kept saying it gets better when you get stronger NPC's to fight for you but that's just promising to automate more of the boring grind...and if a selling point for your game is that you don't have to play it as much, then it's not a fun game to play and should be avoided in the first place.

Yeah, I'm a fan of that genre - but the memey pop-culture overload Calypso slipped into during 2 that it uses as a plot is obnoxious. I still like the game, but it's in spite of the writing and plot and cutscenes.
There's a reason I prefer War for the Overworld.

It took me about 2-3 attempts at playing it before I figured out why I hated it so much. The game is just a bunch of practical jokes on the player, and then as soon as you learn the gimmick, the fun falls away and it's just Korean grinding job simulator. And the lore kinda sucked, but I'm willing to chalk that up to the bad translation.

My biggest gripe with Xenoblade 2 is how meh it feels compared to 1, 3 and X, everything in those seems to have a purpose and an idea behind it, 2 is the only one that feels like half of it is filler, like they came up with the titans first and rhen realized there was no plot-related reason to go there so they just made it up, pretty much nothing between Gormott and Indol matters one bit.
I heard recently that they were already conceptualizing 3 while making 2 and it honestly checks out, 2 really feels like they only made it because they needed to establish the origin of Agnus like 1 establishes the origin of Keves.

TF2 is honest to god one of the worst time syncs I have put into. With over 4500 hours across console and PC, and the latter half of major updates, I can safely say unless you are playing to join a group or make money on hats, it is a complete waste of time.
It was fun for about 1,500 hours. Casual being broken, the community and its drama, Valve not caring about the game and not updating it in 8 years, the only reason you should play it is if you have friends or like different playstyles. Once you get good at it all, there's no reason to go back.

Starts very strong and you get the feel this is a top notch production for an indie studio.
Great music, ambience, dialogue, voice acting.
Solid gameplay, cool art, and you get teased by further weapon choices.
The story starts as an intrigue.

And then it gradually turns into shit.

The ambience is good.
But the dialogue, the wit, the gameplay is just deteriorates.
And pretty much ends like a Zelda CD-i game.

The art style is good but the romantic choices seem to have been pulled from the same inner circle of people who like Steven Universe.
Hades turns out to be a big ol softie.
Everyone just hugs it out.

You fail to mention that the enemies lack any behavior more advanced than the initial ones, just massively sped up to slap you out of your attacks before you can land them and/or given bullshit like randomly throwing out bombs during their normal animations because you can easily wail on them otherwise. Then you get to the non-standard types like the Beefy ones that are just a pain. It boils down to baiting the shitty AI into an infinite juggle or spamming magic, which also trivializes the middling bosses.

Plus one of the worst progression systems in a beat-em-up where experience is gained per-hit, encouraging you to keep enemies as tanky as you can tolerate and punishing you by slowing your progression if you improve your damage to make things easier. Which wouldn't be so bad if the game had a respec, which it still doesn't even though they spent the time, money, and programming to add custom characters and new assets for all the characters.

Castle Crashers only gets a pass because it was one of the little-indies-that-could on XBLA, back when that was slightly more than a marketing gimmick, that came from Newgrounds, one of the biggest hubs of user generated content, so there was an air of the scrubs on Web 2.0 being part of the overproduced Games Industry. Bastion is also mediocre and Supergiant never improved past "strong start with good art and audio gimmick that peters out into tedium by midgame" with the exception of Pyre, which just sucked. Super Meat Boy is still good, but I like The End Is Nigh better.
