I wish I had gotten into more forums when I was a kid. I got into NSider -- the official Nintendo forums -- around 2004/2005 and that was fun. I joined some dude-from-NSider's HTML website game plus chatroom for a couple years until I fell out of contact with them and the website was gone and I never found out where they went.
I fucked with a wrestling forum in middle school but that was only because of a real life friend at the time. OH I used to check this book website out for theorycrafting for a couple weeks around every new book release about once a year from 2002-2010.

Big bang was a good patch outside of the map changes, especially if you were a noob or a shit class like page. Made the worst of 1st and 2nd job classes very playable, buffed a lot of bad 3rd jobs, removed the FMA magestory leech meta, getting well into 4th job became realistic if you were the average dedicated player that couldn't nolife every day for months on end. It was pretty nice, literally opened up content and areas that were forever inaccessible to like 80% of the population and they could reach it at a reasonable pace. The pre-bb exp curve was horrible.

The beginning of the game being dumbed down was when they started adding legend/resistance classes like demon slayer, wild hunter, mercedes and mechanic, all these classes that straight up ignore platforming, then the future adventurer revamps that made them more like the newer classes, then at some point it got out of control and the game started becoming unrecognizable. I'd say probably around the time kaiser or luminous released was when I realized they were full steam ahead on retarded powercreep classes and revamps.

The beginning of the game becoming truly absurd with power scaling imo was with the pre-bb dual blade/potential patch and when they increased the dmg cap from 200k to 1mil and you saw these people literally crossing one damage cap threshold to the next instantly in one patch because they were already that strong before when potential was still new. Unironically destroyed the bossing economy. There's an ideal version of maple out there for me and it's explorer only early big bang without potential but it'll never exist.

That's what I mean by dumbed down, classes became too streamlined. Everyone started to have some powerful, mult-hit attack that would hit multiple enemies, and some ultimate that hits everything on screen. Classes used to feel so unique with their strengths and weaknesses, the gameplay felt more methodical. Platforming mattered like you said. Warriors were slow but solid at 1v1 and can mob from the beginning, and I thought final attack's flashy follow up attack was the coolest thing ever, bowman were pretty strong ranged characters but were screwed at point blank, mages had teleport which was a game changer, thieves could jump around and shoot projectiles, and savage blow hitting 6 times was so cool at the time.

I miss old maple's modest approach to class design so much. I think I like early big bang so much and give it an exception because the explorer classes around that time still felt very very faithful towards the original philosophy of the game even as late as like the chaos patch, pirates included. The changes towards bucc for example actually made it feel like a playable class through all job advancements, the first iteration of it was so bad because it was so sluggish and clunky and BB made it into a real class. Then they pretty much ruined it when they gave it the laser blast attack and octopunch and at that point I think I quit the game.

Discord is a good example of this. It pretty much took the role of what forums used to be about, but it's even faster for communicating between people in whatever group you are in than how forum-posting used to be outside of cases where people ended up in a heated debate over bullshit and you had a message being written every couple of minutes between the participants.

Now everyone knows 4chan, and it wasn't that bad until they took measures to get rid of phoneposters. I used to use 4chan religiously every day. Now I only use it on my PC because my provider is blocked almost universally for some reason. My phone never gets past the 120 second timer, it just loops. So you do that, you kill some spam, but you also kill off a huge chunk of users who would otherwise be here every day. Good for maintenance, VERY BAD for traffic.

Back around the start of the 2000's, I got into piracy and I was stuck on 56k dial up so torrents were not a possibility. As such, I got into Direct Connect hubs.
For those that never used them, it was like an IRC chatroom, but you could search through whatever anyone had specifically shared on their PC, or browse individual user's shared files, and download directly from them. Got into one called Anime Nation, about mid-sized and pretty chill. Got to know the regulars, became one myself, played a fuck ton of videogames with them. We all hopped on R.O.S.E. Online the day it launched, had fun exploring a new MMORPG together. Playing Brood War with two others against 5 AI, playing co-op System Shock 2 over Hamachi, and customized Freelancer on some private server, where the physics were tweaked to be more realistic to make shutting off your engines and flipping around then hitting afterburners in a slingshot maneuver a very useful tactic. I first got linked to 4chan around 2004 in the AN Direct Connect hub, right about the time the Jax the Bat(copyright Jax the Bat) hack was in full swing.
The hub was still going strong when I left for a while due to a lack of internet access out in the sticks. Came back about 2-3 years later, and it went from 300-400 people down to about 15, and only 2 of them were the old regulars. I asked what the hell happened, and they just said everyone moved on to torrents and went off to college/got married, etc. I managed to locate about half a dozen of the old crew on Steam, but haven't managed to play another game with any of them. Torrents are great and everything, but I really miss the community I used to have with Direct Connect.

I'm 28 and most of my friends from high school are now single and NEET. One is legitimately a full time discord moderator for a vtuber. It was always the kind of group that was into TRPGs and games a bit too much, but it's incredibly fucking grim to see your closest friends wallow in misery. One thing I did notice in my early 20s was how many people my age were completely helpless when it came to doing any kind basic tasks that adults had to do. People in their 20s were still having their parents do their taxes and doing all the paperwork for university.

Idk if this is a shitpost or not but lots of people get married in their early 20s and get divorced in their 30s or 40s so people better start getting their shit together being able to communicate and form new connections because if you’re too old in your 30s, the rest of society is going to fall apart fast. If I have a good conversation with someone I will just ask if they want to hang out or something sometime and I’ll give them my number. Depends on the situation of course. However it’s good to probably have some other airgapped thing like a social media or messaging app for people you don’t know enough yet to give them your number.
