RTS is about as dead as fighting games (so not really). The push towards PvP in the late 2000's-early 2010's didn't do any favors and put up a massive wall between casuals and competitive players. The genre is just super niche. New games are getting made, old games are seeing updates and remakes/remasters and mods are still being created for any game that has good mod support but don't expect it to hit those early 2000 numbers ever again.

A combination of other genres emerging that focus on one particular aspect of the RTS that the old audience liked (e.g. city builders and other management sims, RTT games like Wargame and Total War, and so on) and over a decade of RTS developers constantly chasing the Starcraft-tier competitive multiplayer/esports dragon without realising that only represents a minority of the remaining audience still interested in RTS games.

A lot of developers/publishers still haven't figured out that virtually all of the big competitive multiplayer smash-hits started with a good game that generally popular that people got invested in enough to take it super seriously, and that trying to skip the general audience step and building a game entirely around super sweaty comp multiplayer almost never works. It does look like that mentality has thankfully mostly disappeared now, but that's probably because most of the studios still making RTS games today are small A/AA outfits and serious big budget projects basically don't exist in that space any more.

If I want to get into RTS without getting into Discord groups to find people to play with what are my options?
As I understand the state of things it's just Starcraft 2 and that AOE2 remake?

When this is first brought up, Frieren's companions go "wait, why not give them a chance...?" And it's shown that it ends terribly. You took care of demon kid? Well, it thinks you like caring for kids, so it will murder your neighbors and bring their kid to you.

The genre has never been popular enough to be truly AAA. Major game companies don't both with AA games anymore because they can't milk normies as much. Smaller studios and indies haven't made a good one yet because other genres are easier to develop.

The game itself uses a very plain Blizz formula with some gimmicks sprinkled over and the campaign goes in style, with little to no charm of its progenitors. Good old ancient evil awakens story with the big bad being your typical squidman faction that's essentially Zerg/Undead, missions offer little variety or challenge, the only character I remember from it is schizo orc leader obsessed with demons.
If you're in a mood for some classic RTS action, it's not too bad, just bland and sluggish.

it really felt like starcraft 2 came along and then everyone just copied the worst aspects of that game.

Because it's a game where rounds take a long time but you can't just pause it like you can with a turn based game. It also has the fighting game problem where the skill floor for PVP is very high.

Investing in a solid co-op mode is a sensible thing to do for an RTS, it increases the replayability and longevity of the game while still being perfectly in sync with the core power fantasy that guy highlights. I remember looking the lobby browser in Command & Conquer and a big chunk of the lobbies being various flavours of comp-stomp, there's always been an appetite for ways to beat up the AI some more once a player is finished with the main campaign content.

RTS has the same problem as Fighting Games, which is the high skill floor making it not fun to get into the game competitively as a newcomer.
I don't think there's really a solution for this, and the only reason FGs and RTS games used to be popular was due to a lack of competition.

Hardcorefags killed RTS. Most RTS players played for fun, unusual modes, and casual multiplayer. Instead of listening to their player base, developers chose to listen to the extreme minority who attend tournaments and prefer ranked modes.
CBA and Dota made AoE2 and WC3 popular and also allowed players to create their own maps and game modes instead of relying on DLC. The first real-time strategy game designed for casual gamers rather than hardcore gamers will become popular again.
Casual games moved to MOBA because they are casual-friendly, developers ignored casual gamers, and they lost a large audience.

It's peaked in all directions. The traditional types like AoE and Starcraft were never surpassed in their field. Similarly, the large scale ones like Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander also remain impossible to beat. Ditto for the tactical, small scale ones like Dawn of War 2 and Company of Heroes.

It's a solved genre. It's finished. Impossible for anybody to improve upon it. Its best works have already come and gone.
