I fully believe *this* current HL project will be the one to survive, however I don't think it'll be this year. That being said, it would make the most sense to ship this within the year as it's a healthy distance from GTA6, but again I think it's anywhere from 1-2 years away. Valve are not announcing or shipping anything until you could count the days on your fingers.

GTA 6 is a console exclusive while HL3 will be PC exclusive, I don't think the userbase will clash. Though yeah, GTA 6 had a massive chance to outshine any other games when it comes to attention next year.
Anonymous No.725015054 [Report]

I think GTA6 is a black hole for anyone releasing anything within it's radius, you're right that HL3 will also be a decade+ long wait and be on PC exclusive so that gives a lot of leeway but I can imagine a lot more people would buy in for a console+GTA6 over HL3.

The only thing I'm worried about here is the procedural generation stuff. Like I get it the game needs to be replayable with how games like Half-Life ain't exactly vogue in this day and age but the way they describe the randomization is too radical for the series I feel.

I loved Alyx, I'm loving Deadlock, there is fewer devs I have any faith in by the year but if Valve "we cancelled almost 4 different HL3 type projects" Software is finally releasing a HL3 I have complete faith.

That said I just realized how incredible The Final Hours of Half Life 3 could be for seeing all the other iterations of the project if they open up on that, or even showing the original time travel to Black Mesa ending for Alyx.

I gotta give it to Valve. I have mixed feelings about reviving Eli, but at least they're not stupid enough to actually go for "time travel back to Black Mesa" and "G-Man is Gordon from the future" plot. HLA gave me a bit of assurance that both of those story ideas are as good as dead.

The Borealis plot was scrapped because a confined space like a container ship wouldn't be very fun to play in.
I'm sure the Borealis is in the game and you get to see it, but I have a feeling Gordon will go back to Xen since gravity effects are mentioned.

They are absolutely 100% setting a level on that ship, I have no reason to believe this other than I assume some amount of stubbornness to have a container ship level in HL game because Valve has been iterating on a a container ship level since 2000.

The first version of HL3 was way more radical than L4D with the idea. The game's supposed to be formed of multiple procedurally generated maps with handcrafted areas sprinkled in for the pacing's sake. It didn't take because Source 2 wasn't finished yet at the time. The codes for the procedural stuff is still there this time though so I think we can expect this version of HL3 will retain some degree of randomization.

That would give it a dev cycle of 6-8 years depending on when exactly the project started (could've been a decent bit before Alyx released). I just don't see it taking that long. They already have Source 2 pretty much finished since Alyx, and Source was what took most of the dev time with HL2. Aside from the engine, it's just a linear 15-20-ish hour fps campaign, and there's no reason it would take that long.

Yeah there really wasn't any good reason to think it was done since playtesting hadn't even really begun then. Looking at the datamine findings I think the game has largely been done for 8-10 months now. Most of the recent stuff seems to have been polishing and general documentation. Back in 2024 the big datamines only really started in summer of that year. Again I wouldn't be optimistic for anything at the game awards, I believe Valve announcing it independently is more likely and with Raising the Bar getting a reprint this year, as stated by Valve, I would think they would wait until an announcement to start selling it.

This is the HLX Miro board, a community compilation of information on HLX and related subjects. Covering datamined strings, employee hirings and interviews, and features found in CS2 and Deadlock. Spoilers for game content if you care for that. Scroll to get away from the memeshit.
https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVINqBTwM=/

Datamining new text strings from Source 2 game updates has been the primary avenue of finding out what Valve's been working on since 2016. It's how we found about Half-Life: Alyx (HLVR), Deadlock (Citadel), and CS:GO's Source 2 port actually being a thing. Once datamined manually, these strings are now automatically tracked by SteamDB through their GameTracking github repos. Here are the three big repos people currently hunt for HLX strings in with each update:
https://github.com/SteamDatabase/GameTracking-Dota2
https://github.com/SteamDatabase/GameTracking-CS2
https://github.com/SteamDatabase/GameTracking-Deadlock
This is where Tyler, Gabefollower and their ilk get the vast majority of their info from.
Gabefollower, at least, links to these as a source and has a pastebin account with lists of compiled strings from these updates covering HLX, Deadlock, and CS2. Note the dates.
https://pastebin.com/u/gabefollower

>haven't we done this song and dance before
Not to this extent. Prior strings about HL3/Episode 3 were almost always leftovers from dead past projects. Mentions in Alien Swarm's fgd files, shit left behind in the Aperture Robot Repair demo, things that were never referenced again. HLX is different. It mirrors the pattern we've seen with Alyx, CS2, and Deadlock, where strings about them kept showing up in updates for other Source 2 games until they were released. We've been consistently getting HLX strings for 5 years now. It's coming, it's real.

As an example of the pattern I've mentioned:
We first definitvely learned about HLVR in 2016 from strings contained in updates to Dota 2 and Destinations (now SteamVR Home). Updates to these two titles continued to give us HLVR-related strings all the way to November 2019 when HLVR was announced as Half-Life: Alyx.

There's unfortunately no existing compilation of datamined HLVR strings like there is for CS2, Citadel and HLX. The only real references to them that exist nowadays are old /v/ posts, Tyler's videos (yuck) and articles about said videos.
But I don't need an entire compilation. Here's an example of an HLVR fgd string leaked in 2016:
>@PointClass base(Targetname, Parentname) = point_player_speak : "Used to force the HLVR player to speak"
There's even a /v/ post referencing it from 2016: https://arch.b4k.dev/v/thread/354249435/#354270942

This string made it all the way to the final game's FGD as is:

why do people think Valve would do this? Ever since artifact they don't do big announcements anymore they just say "hey it's ready, we'll show it in a week, and we'll release it in a month or so". Alyx was announced in a tweet, delayed from a game awards premiere to add in full locomotion, then shown off in Jan or Feb, and released a month later. CS2 was just suddenly out and shipped. Deadlock had outright anti-marketing still not even being announced. HL3 will get a tweet that slates a date for showing off and a different date for release, it's be announced before the game awards if at all.

That's basically what Remnant did, and it sorta worked out okay. Each "zone" you go to starts to feel shallow and repetitive, though, because all the puzzle pieces have to fit together in any order and without any visual seams. In the old NoClip documentary for the 20th anniversary of Half-Life, Geoff said that he once asked Valve if they had the G-Man model around because he wanted to have it for a cute little introduction moment for TGA or something, but Valve said they didn't really know where the model was or who was working on it (Funnily enough, it has since turned out that Geoff was lying through his teeth and already working on The Final Hours of Half Life Alyx at the time)
My point is that I think Geoff would do anything to finally get that chance to have the G-Man at TGA announcing Half-Life 3.

As soon as HL2Ep3 was cancelled in favor of a HL3/HLX they immediately lose any particular reason to feature an Arctic environment.

Portal 2 didn’t fuck anything up, it was just the last hurrah of the single player game designers at Valve. Around that time Gabe was heavily pushing games as a service and multiplayer, so various projects that were more single player focused failed to get any momentum after Portal 2.

Gabe has been hands off from day to day operations at Valve for years now. He was more hands on back in 2011 because that era was still a scary time for Valve, business-wise. Steam was growing but still not the juggernaut it is now, and they had to be afraid of the rise of mobile gaming eating the gaming market as a whole and of Microsoft shooting them in the back by preventing Steam from working on Windows 8. All the multiplayer and games as a service stuff was a push to get more revenue streams going and having back up plans.

More technical innovation that translates into game mechanics. HLA was really fun to pick up stuff and looking for resins in, and the stealth sections worked really well (to the point that I'd want Valve to make a Thief VR game instead of whoever is making it). Now I want to see what current Valve can do for a non-VR game with modern hardware in terms of cool mechanics. Well, to be fair, different developers had different reasons for not wanting to do Ep3, as somewhat shown in the documentary. Gabe and a few others like Dave Riller were all about "we need a big revolution to justify an Episode Three," while you have other developers like David Speyer and Jay Stelly who gave up on Ep3 because they thought "oh we took too long and missed it, it's too late for an Ep3 now so we need a full blown HL3." There were also other developers who were just plain burnt out on Half-Life and wanted to do other stuff, like Robin Walker focusing more on Team Fortress 2. (John Guthrie wasn't in the documentary but it's somewhat well known that he went off to do become a big contributor to Portal 2 instead of working on Half-Life 2 Episode Three)

These strings are also different compared to the past ones from the Source games. With an engine that's still being worked on like Source 2, everything in it that gets added is new and not from a dead project, a project that might get killed in the future but one that is in active development. These features get merged into the engine for later so other games can use them which is why they can appear in things like CS2, Alyx, or Deadlock. I'm currently more interested in the 'TF' project that was found more recently and seems to be following CS2's pattern of heavily focusing on importing new objects from Source 1 into Source 2, and with the project name we can all assume what that means.
>Mentions in Alien Swarm's fgd files
A bit of autism from me but Portal 2's day one release files reference Alien Swarm Infestation which was the cancelled sequel that was in the works prior to the actual Alien Swarm coming out. Alien Swarm was originally an Unreal Tournament mod that was then planned to have a sequel on Source, that being Infestation, and eventually the development team ghosted their website and fanbase. It was only when people pointed out that they were working on a remake of Alien Swarm for Valve that they came out to announce it properly. Alien Swarm for Valve came out and promptly bombed so Infestation, the long awaited sequel, was cancelled.

Allegedly one of his treatments for Half-Life 3 was a 'movie game' in the way that it had very little room for game design since he basically wrote a strict short story more than a game story. This caused issues with the game designers at Valve and lead to an argument where he left. I didn't believe this at the time but this got backed up later on with some stuff and Borealis and also Marc said in the HL2 documentary that he left because he felt like he was stifling people. It sounds like it was probably true and he realized in retrospect he was in the wrong.

I think Marc is able to write really solid story structure with a lot of interesting sci-fi concepts, but he doesn't do a great job writing believable characters. They feel like they're archetypes from a B Movie whereas in the Episodes they're fleshed out more.

Half-Life 2 wasn't a character focused story or game, so Laidlaw had to stick to caricatures to get the characters points across. And even then he managed to write a few interesting ones like Dr. Breen or Judas Mossman before he got the chance to do a proper character-driven story.
Laidlaw can certainly write good stuff if you just give him the room.

The Episodes managed to balance out the G-Man's mystery and the character writing really well imo. However Half-Life Alyx leaned too much on the character's side. I'm worried that Half Life 3 will have a lot of the fun chipped away from it.
1 got to have all kinds of wacky weapons and aliens. 2 was so sterilized in comparison with basically the same arsenal as 1 without the fun stuff with the only real addition being the gimmick gun. Cut most the aliens too with hardly any to take their place.
Alyx was supposed to have cool stuff like the tau cannon or snarks but those got cut. They really gotta stop sanding away all the edges of these games.

They literally have a setting where Earth has been overrun with wild alien creatures and a hostile massive empire and yet it manages to be so incredibly boring in what you encounter.

I didn't know that. TF2's 20th anniversary is in 2 years, but with how little Valve seems to care for the game, I seriously doubt a CS2-sized makeover would ever happen to the game. They'd let it rot in perpetuity without any updates whatsoever if they could still make money off of it that way.

Yeah, yeah, I know Combine wiped out like 95% of humanity in the 7 hour war, but that's all off-screen and no one important from Black Mesa seemingly got killed in spite of USA being basically obliterated.

Not only that, but for games in particular, the writer's job is more to try to figure out how to put together and contextualize what everyone else has built in a coherent way, often at a pretty late stage. Marc Laidlaw himself has always tried to stress that he never gave top-down orders on what the story would be and tell the engineers and level designers to build it. He would bounce ideas around with the engineers and designers int he early stages to inspire them, they would build the gameplay and levels into a rough track, and then he would come back and try to figure out a story that would fit the track. For Half-Life 1 in particular, the entire level track had already been built before Marc Laidlaw had even been hired.

If Portal 2 is more zany and cartoony, it's because a lot of the gameplay and world building had already become more zany with the addition of the gels and the world becoming more dynamic by having the panels actually move around rather than be static geometry as in Portal 1. Wolpaw and Pinkerton wrote for that kind of world that had already been built, they didn't tell the level designers to build that kind of world.

But also strings of code that refer to optimizations, which means that they are somewhat really far in development, so an announcement might be imminent. This time the game is real, there are too many people slipping up in interviews, too many strings of code, too many things coming together for it not to be real. It's just a matter of

Yeah, that's fine, you dont have to like it. But is not a retcon because it's stablished that Eli died before. In fact, Eli needed to die in order for the deal between Gman and Alyx to happen.

Part # 1/3

Metal Gear Solid 6: Vigilant Ghosts
>Set in Year 2031
>Game starts off as a sneaking mission with a masked operative that we presume to be Raiden in a sneaking cyborg body
>Goes by Code-name Lightning, and is guided by Otacon and Sunny
>Mission is strictly a non-combat observer mission on a suspect military org operating in South Africa
>The military org is revealed to be a rogue group known as LAZARUS
>LAZARUS has plans to form new nation led by warrior kings
>Sneaking mission goes hot and escalates into several nuclear weapons being detonated, sparking a hot war in the region
>Lightning is critically injured in this mission and it is unclear if he is alive or dead
>Fast forward to 2033
>LAZARUS has overtaken a large island in the Mediterranean and has been instigating more countries into the global war sparked in 2031
>LAZARUS is revealed to be planning a large operation according to covert sources
>Player assumes role of an American soldier masked protagonist in a sneaking suit being airdropped by stealth aircraft
>Player assumes we are playing Lightning again, but like MGS2 it is revealed to be a new character, blonde hair, named Dark Wolf
>Dark Wolf looks and sounds like Raiden, but is clearly different
>Dark Wolf proceeds to infiltrate LAZARUS and terminate various Cyborgs
>Big plot twist in game will consist of LAZARUS resurrecting old war heroes as advanced AI clones in cyborg bodies (hence the Vigilant Ghost title)
Anonymous No.725108539 [Report]
Part # 2/3

>Solid Snake is resurrected as a cyborg clone and becomes primary antagonist
>Snake engages Dark Wolf, presuming Wolf to be Raiden and begins taunting him
>It's revealed that Wolf is actually Jack's son John, and that Raiden was killed in the initial LAZARUS incident 2 years earlier
>Snake and Wolf battle, with Wolf almost being killed, until a cyborg ninja (accompanied by an older model quadruped unmanned gear) affiliated with Maverick intervenes causing Snake to retreat
>Wolf and the ninja speak, with Wolf remarking how the ninja reminds him of his father Raiden
>The ninja reveals himself as codename Kaji, and removes his mask to show a grown-up George, with the unmanned gear being a copy of Blade Wolf known as Shadow Dog
>Wolf, angered since his father spent more time with George training him, tells George to stay out of his way
>Wolf proceeds to battle several cyborg AI clones in the facility, trying to gather additional information as to what LAZARUS is planning
>It's revealed LAZARUS is planning to take out key leaders utilizing a series of cutting edge cyborg AI clones being developed on a facility on their island
>It's further revealed that these AI clones are actual physical embodiments of the Patriots, with the cyborg bodies containing biological materials designed to look like various world leaders and making them indistinguishable from normal people
>Wolf must set aside his differences with Kaji and the two must work together, along with Shadow Dog, to terminate LAZARUS and end the Patriot Biocyborg clones before they can be deployed
>Final battle involves Snake, Wolf, and Kaji fighting, with Kaji being mortally wounded

part # 3/3

>Kaji tells Wolf that he was always jealous of him, saying Raiden always talked about John and how he never wanted John to have to live the same life of war
>Kaji gives Wolf Sam's blade and perishes as Snake integrates himself into a large metal gear
>Wolf battles against Snake in Metal Gear Resolution, ultimately killing snake and destroying the metal gear with Sam's sword
>Wolf has one final battle with a series of the Patriot biocyborgs coming online, before defeating them all
>Wolf sets the self-destruct on the LAZARUS facility and escapes
>Wolf is approached by Maverick at the end, Raiden and Kaji having been redeemed in his eyes, and agrees to join Maverick to continue his father's legacy
>The global war still rages, setting up the stage for a sequel
>Final scene of game shows Wolf drawing Sam's sword and deciding to inherit it as his main weapon
>queue credits

The reason Alyx's writing is like that is because it was rushed to shit after the previous story bombed in company playtests, so the writer for that story was fired and Wolpaw and the like were rushed in to create a new story in less than a year. The more jokey tone is also an overreaction to the tone of the prior story which was dull and miserable.
