I don't think I've seen anyone claim it's a masterpiece on /v/.
It's a decent game, but it's not really a Ninja Gaiden game in spirit. Way too much handholding. Also the visual identity and "style" is incredibly boring and uninspired. Feels like genshin impact with a techno ninja skin.
If it was a spinoff something like "Ninja Gaiden: Raven Clan" it would seem more palatable than claiming this as a continuation of the core series.

NG4's flaws are easier to forgive because at the very least it feels like a brand new game and its own thing. The gameplay is different, the setting is different, the vibe is different etc

It's really weird, the weirdest part is that since you have the option to change the color of the yellow paint, it's properly flagged as its own thing instead of just being part of the texture, so they could theoretically let you disable it easily, but don't.

But that trial just exposes how much the game is centered around the meter. Any time the enemies do red attacks you just can't do shit. The backbone of NG4 falls apart once you realise any time you are up against a strong enemy, you can just block and wait for them to do a red attack then press your meter. You can genuinely play against every boss fight like this and there's nothing they can do about it, all because of the focus on the meter.

I kind of hope there's a mod that just takes it away. The issue is the art direction itself though. If you have enough distinct points of interest with varied art instead of copy pasting assets, knowing where to go becomes natural without any actual guiding necessary. Ironically, NG4 is close to NG2 in regards to sadism. One of NG4 biggest problems is the announcement of DLC before the game was out that also locked legacy costumes behind a paywall without any unlockable costumes being in the base game. The second big problem is showing Ryu so often while having him be an afterthought as far as gameplay is concerned. They even made the same mistake as vanilla NG3 stating that Ryu only had one weapon at launch but, it's okay they have DLC guys so he'll get atleast one new weapon™. NG4 also has a lost of the same problems that people have with the whole series. Yakumo is about as fleshed out as a person as Ryu is though with a lot less cold and calculating moments in cutscenes EX. Ryu slashing the DDS in half at the end of NG1.

It does. Mork's been getting more, and more brave in praising NG3RE. He was complimenting the game in community posts and in chat. You'd think a guy who loves scoring systems, hates cheesing, wants little platforming/exploration gimmicks would love NG3RE and the Bloody Rage system. Look at games like Klonoa for a great example of this. or drill dozer.
There's even a game called pepper grinder that is basically the drill mechanic from sonic colours but it actually has decent utilization and progression, it actually does interesting things with the idea that gets more complex as the games goes so by the end you think "yeah they really did a lot and got the most out of their mechanics"
