Why hasn't VR taken off yet?
>headsets are affordable and even subsidized(Quest 3S is under $300)
>PCVR games are better than ever, and outside of Sims you don't need a high end system to run them
>PC and Playstation VR no longer requires you to jerryrig a bunch of cables and sensors in a large room
>Quest and Pico devices can run all sorts of games standalone without requiring a PC at all

And yet, it remains a niche product that can't break through to the mainstream. Why?

You want the answer?
Because Nintendo hasn't put out a low-cost true VR system, and Labo/BotW/Captain Toad/Smash Ultimate doesn't count.
If they ever put out a real headset accessory (again, the Labo/Virtual Boy accessories don't count) and Joy-Con 2 grips, it might even work this gen.

What does that have to do with anything?
The HD standard took off before Nintendo adopted it, same for online play. On the flipside, Nintendo embraced 3D more than anyone else and that didn't go anywhere

Cables, heavy, uncomfortable, low FOV (if you can see the edges at all it's trash), low resolution, blurry in general, only one genuinely good game (indie pixelshit mobile tier trash doesn't count), high end headsets are expensive and still aren't good enough. Because you are a dumbass.

Why would I spend $300 on top of a PC to play the Sims when I could just NOT spend the extra $300 and play the Sims anyway? What does VR provide? If I'm already paying $40 for The Sims, then why is spending $340 for the exact same game a good idea?

Outside Beat Saber and VR Chat, there isn't a single reason for most people to buy the system. And that is after nearly ten fucking years. I can buy two dozen different consoles for less than that price that haven't seen a new game in over ten years as well, and they will all have better libraries.

And you dumb shits still won't acknowledge the faults of the system. Until you do, VR is just going to continue to fail like it always has. And no, I'm not going to go over them with you for a hundredth time. By now, you've already heard them, so just try to use your memory and consider for a moment that they might have valid complaints that need to be addressed.

It's actually shocking to me that nintendo hasn't tried a real vr system since the virtualboy. 3ds kinda seemed to be going that direction, but they just haven't taken that extra step. The fact that they haven't maybe indicates the technology is just not at a point where its practical to work with, or that its just cost/profit analysis just makes it unfeasible.

My first VR experience was Gran Turismo 7 (PSVR2) with a wheel and pedals. It was great, but after an hour of driving really fast I felt so nauseous that I couldn't get out of bed for hours. It fucked me up so bad I was slightly disoriented for a couple of days.
GT7 was probably not a good choice for a complete beginner, but desu I still haven't fully gotten used to VR, and games like GT7 still make feel a little woozy.
I think the problem with racing games in particular is that you don't feel the acceleration, bumps and all the different forces so it messes with your brain.

I feel like sony had the best shot but the combination of PS5 and PSVR2 was expensive so hardware sales didn't justify enough games

Nintendo could crush if they were in Meta's position. They are the best at selling games on cheap mobile hardware. But they are completely uninterested at the moment.

PC has been through several price inflations this decade with cypto and now AI, so that was never going to happen.

If you enter a "why did VR fail" thread you read complaints from people who havn't played VR, and they don't complain about things or even know about things a VR owner would complain about. It's just third worlders without a clue. Some things are obvious like no games, a good experience is expensive, simulator sickness, etc. But i'm talking about the constant imagination and non sequiturs in these threads.

If you want to see VR users complain about real VR problems, go in the rare VR gaming threads.

The entire VR industry is in this holding pattern where the devs are waiting for the hardware to catch on before they invest real time/effort and the hardware side is waiting for the devs to make something good so they can sell units. ios apps and a virtual screen for your macbook, galaxy XR is the google equivalent for android apps. Quest is also android but you can't just grab stuff from the google play store where all androids apps are. Quest's UI is also limited to 3 panels in a fixed position last time I checked. I'm not an expert on how mature all these things are in present day. But I can at least say that AVP/Galaxy XR have panels high res enough for desktop use, quest not really.

The only one you didn't make up is motion sickness and I'm convinced that most people can get over it, especially if they're already into gaming. You might not remember this but people used to get motion sick playing Doom, Descent, and other FPS games. You don't hear about that anymore. I got quite motion sick in my first few sessions and I still feel weird for like 15 seconds after taking it off, but it's no big deal now.

It's weirdly frustrating how ignorant people generally are about VR. I had a conversation just last week with a guy saying he'd buy it if he could play a really good Star Wars game with it. I pointed out that you can, as of like a year ago, already play Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy on it. Another guy said there's no "real" games and I pointed him to the list of flat-to-VR conversion mods that exist. Then there's the list of great VR native games.

Bunch of retards getting all their opinions from streamers that just don't want to risk having to stand up to play anything.

For quest 2, dont pay more than 100$. You can probably get the old 64gb ones for like 50$ (but can only fit like 1 game at a time with all the update bloat) but if using with a pc that won't matter. Don't get the 3s if you go current gen go with quest 3.

The math for this is commonly known, ask a chatbot. It's not like you can't do it, bigger screen over a larger fov, lean forward, use big fonts, but you really have to go to the AVP or XR's 3600px+ to make desktop use worth it for consumers.

no games, it's a dead ecosystem, big companies dont invest into it because the market share is pathetic, and people dont buy it because of the entry cost and lack of games
if you google "best vr games 2025" it will give you a list of like 20-30 games, most of which released between 2016 and 2020 lmao
>b-b-b-but look at this huge list of all these indie games that all do the same thing! i swear manual weapon reloads gets fun after you do it in 20 different shooters that all feel and play the same!
yeah, the problem is it got boring past the first game of a thousand
VR needs games the likes of skyrim, fallout, etc etc - big worlds to explore, preferably with imsim mechanics (as VR naturally lends itself to them), but the problem is, the marketshare is abysmal, and no indie dev with a budget of a piece of toast and a quart of milk will do it for obvious reasons, and those that do end up with a """""""game""""""" with one functional level, or hyper-focus on stupid shit nobody gives a fuck about

Lots of reasons were already given itt, but also lots of bullshit. I'm not gonna talk about the price, because most of you will gladly pay a gorillion dollars for your pc anyway - you know your pricepoints.
Lack of games is the main problem - browse through the VR categories on steam and you'll notice that the majority of the games are gimmick sandbox games (beatsaber, raw data, blade and sorcery, etc.), then there's skyrim and fallout vr, and then a handful of "full fledged" vr games. Obviously this is circular dependency, because Lack of games -> High financial risk of creatign vr game - >Lack of games and so on, but that's just how it is. At this point the whole VR game market seems to be stuck in something akin to the era between games at arcades and the first game consoles at home.
Another isssue is the lack of standarization. Unfortunately the market is not yet (if ever) at the stage when buing another VR system can be validated by exclusive games. Right now it needs games that work on every VR set, otherwise you're needlessly divinding an already small audience.
The lack of room is a bit far fetched - sure it helps to have a lot of space, as much as it help to have a huge desk with a huge screen just for gaming. If you can find a 2m x 2m square near your pc you're good to go on most games.
Same shit with screwing your eyesight - you spend to much time on /v/ to use this is as a reason
Motion sickness or vr sickness can be sometimes surpassed. At the start i was getting nauseous after 15 minutes of game. Then it happened later and later and I stopped noticing it after something around 2 weeks. I know there are some people who can't - sucks to be you.
I'm not gonna shill it, to each their own, but I've never felt as if I've wasted my money.

problem is 99% of them are mobile tier or feel like tech demos
proper gamedevs still aren't making vr projects, when standalone vr reaches ps4 level gfx, then it'll take off, also headsets need to get lighter and cheaper

All VR games should be physical activities in nature
This would allow gamer kids to engage with PE at a younger age and stay physically fit until they're old enough to pursue shit like lifting weights in high school

nta but it's great, the biggest criticisms while valid aren't of the mechanics really but of how Valve implemented them into Alyx's campaign, we have multiple campaign mods on the workshop that remove the VR training wheels
>The game was made for teleportation
From here to there was made with locomotion in mind and most of the parkour puzzles require it, you cannot progress with teleportation exclusively
>The enemies are very easy
Valve balanced the game very well, Levitation is a direct sequel to the Alyx campaign, it starts you off with an unupgraded pistol and the combine are as tough as they are at the end of Valve's Alyx from the get go
>Only 3 weapons
Return to Rapture implements many weapons and even tries two handed weapons, it admittedly fails at two handed weapons like shotguns

The HL2VR mod is liked more by a lot of people for being more of an actual game and way less safe, maybe they never played any custom maps or maybe it's just that Alyx hugs (You) in Episode 1
The HL1 mod is abysmal, doesn't even have manual reloading oh but the dev added steam achievements though, before abandoning it years ago, it still crashes constantly
Black Mesa mod has HL2 weapons and not the HL1/Black Mesa so I hate it and never gave it a real chance

My current setup makes room scale shit. While I mostly only play seated games it still takes up an annoying amount of space to then not also have room scale available. Hopefully my next house is better suited.

>It's not a big deal you just build up a tolerance to the motion sickness and then it goes away
The average consumer does not want to spend two weeks acclimating to their fucking VR headset you idiot. You're like the people that use Linux that can't understand why the average normie won't use Linux.

>tfw had 0 furniture in my old apartment and converted the entire living room into a VR play space
That was a damn good year. Only moved out because of a wahmen needing "more space." Never do shit for the inferior gender, Anons.

The only VR people care about is Sword Art Online style.
Right now we have strapping screens to your eyeballs and motion controls. The wii and the xbox Kinect already had motion controls, it's nothing new. Until Elon Musk makes his brain chips, no one will care about VR.

Reloading the gun is fun in VR. Every time you reload is an expression of skill. If you are fast and consistent you are rewarded with quicker reloads. If you flub it you pay the price. It is way more interesting than just pressing R. It's like a super fresh take on the active reload system from Gears of War. The only PC game with interesting reload mechanics doesn't have deathmatch so its pointless.

This is especially true if you're a yuropoor. Most young men I know either live with their parents which means they're confined to their small childhood bedroom or they live in a small apartment.
>inb4 living room
Yuropeon living rooms are small. If you have a wife and kids, there's just not enough room for VR.
>bedroom
Yuropoor bedrooms are usually just big enough for a queen size bed and a fitted closet.
>you don't a lot of space, just sit down!
Bullshit. VR is a pain in the ass if you don't have at least 7x7 ft or 2x2m of space, but realistically you need a bit more than that to feel comfortable.

Flat-screen fps is entirely press a button or flick a stick/mouse. Its basically pong compared to vr physical aim. Made flat games completely uninteresting to me outside of pixel slop.
