It was because Bandai Namco was making a version of it and it was apparently absolutely fucking horrible and everyone hated it during early play tests. The fact that it became a BOTW clone later on is just what happens when a game was made during that era of Nintendo. Honestly kinda want to see the Bamco version just for laughs. It's always been a shallow adventure with no real difficulty or stakes for people who are afraid of real depth. Even fucking Kingdom Hearts 1 had more RPG depth and gameplay variety than OoT. Ask yourself what real reason there is to replay OoT the so-called "best game ever made". Or any Zelda game for that matter. The gameplay is horrifically boring, easy, and the puzzles are braindead wastes of time. Zelda btw also started the open-world cancer that infests the modern game industry, all the way back on the NES. It ruined Metroid Prime 4 as mentioned in the OP.

Leave Zelda in the past, it's been far surpassed and is obsolete. There's no reason to play a Zelda game anymore unless you're a masochist who just wants a worse experience than you can get with another game.

I can't stand the way nintendo has marketed games the last few years. They have a habit of showing every detail and leaving little to actually be discovered. It's to the point where I try and only see reveal trailers and maybe the launch one unless its an explainer trailer.
Metroid would suffer from having a direct individually go over your powerups. A big part of those games is the world blocking you off and working out what each new upgrade allows you to do as you get them, not knowing because of prior knowledge from a trailer.

A big open world area is normalfag bait and worth advertising, I agree. The problem is everything's been revealed in anemic, breadcrumby ways. Where's the big blowout trailer to get people hyped and generate buzz? Despite being one of (if not THE) most expensive AAA projects Nintendo has ever made, the game is out in 3 weeks and nobody besides Metroid autists are talking about it. There's zero buzz.

Obviously Metroid is a smaller series than 3D Mario or 3D Zelda. But the buzz shouldn't be this dead. Even Dread had more marketing/hype. Prime is a prestigious series, it's one of the few Nintendo franchises that can crack 90+ Metacritic scores and get into GOTY talks. Prime 1R just got a 94 MC with a 20 year old formula, so critics still love it.

This minimal marketing is baffling for such a prestigious, long awaited, and expensive project.

Relating to the Vah Naboris quest, tell me: can you sequence break the quest to get the thunder helm from the Yiga Clan? The Yiga Clan boss fight takes place in an open area (the part of the desert cliffs with the big pit) but he's magically not there until the game decides that he has to be. First time I went there I didn;'t even know what that pit was for. Turns out it's for an overly scripted boss fight that you can't even try until an event flag is triggered.

The reason why metroid can never fully embrace the open world philosophy is because it gates progress and exploration behind ability items. Its a pure spiral of "new ability unlocks new area which holds new ability which unlocks new area." Your ability to traverse at the beginning of the game is very limited.
Open world games are almost the exact opposite. Your ability to traverse the world doesn't really ever improve in any way. No areas are locked off to you except very fringe places. Once you do the tutorial of skyrim, you're out in the world and can truly go wherever you want. To allow you to do that, they can't afford to lock huge regions of the game behind needing special abilities. Because then it wouldn't be a game where you could go wherever you want

Corruption is okay. It suffers the same problem as any trilogy does. The 1st in the trilogy sets the stage, 2nd blows everything out of the water with awesomeness, then the 3rd "final" entry fails to deliver on that hype left by the 2nd.

I love Prime 1 for being a sequence-breaking dream, and Echoes also has its breaks that are fun (dependent though on your disc version, the earlier the better). Corruption only has a few major breaks, and it's just not as fun as a result of being so locked down. that's not Retro's fault as much as it's typical Nintendo refusing to let players have fun.
