My take is that Dragon Quest just looks like an OLD game. No amount of 2D HD bullshit will change a damn thing. It looks like an OLD game and people aren't impressed by such frankly shoddy looking games. The sprite work in Dragon Quest's 2D HD games looks honestly worse than Chrono Trigger whose sprites are livelier and more animated.

If Square Enix wants to impress people into giving Dragon Quest a chance especially the old games they need FULL blown remakes in 3D on the same scale as Dragon Quest 11. Its no different than how people don't give a fuck about Persona's old games to most people Persona's "first" game is Persona 4. Same principle with people thinking the first Street Fighter is Street Fighter 2 because no one cares about Street Fighter 1.

The original FF7 sold like mad on pure word of mouth and charm alone, and somehow with 3x the marketing budget, endless trailers, a hype cycle that lasted nearly a decade, and milking nostalgia dry-they still couldn’t touch it. You’d think with the PS5 install base and modern advertising they'd eclipse it instantly, but nah.
