When you pick up the OG Steam Controller, your both thumbs are placed naturally on the trackpads

the trackpads are really just tiny laptop trackpads, nothing special, but paired with the haptic and pressure sensitivity and steams extremely powerful controller mapping tool you have literally infinite possibilities to utilize them to play games without strong console controls. if you are willing to sit there and build a good mapping for a game then it really pays off.

Based Gaben indeed. I do kinda wish they'd make an Elite / Edge style version though; I'd easily pay more if the hardware was worth it. Im a little skeptical of the stick positions vs the track pads and that its symmetrical vs asymmetrical but it should be fine. Its kind a like how the DualSense is the most comfortable symmetrical controller around even for Xbox-style asymmetrical users - but it comes down to getting the layout perfect.

The great thing Valve should have learned from Steam Controller 1 is that you absolutely cannot fuck up the expected pick up and play capability of the masses to cater to the handful of autists who will spend forever learning new input to play a RTS that expects KB/M or whatever the fuck with a controller.
This has to be the best of both worlds so by default its instantly viable for every gamepad usage while also being able to do all the custom autist shit. They've spent years building SteamInput and drivers to make sure that happens on the software side, they just have to get the hardware right now replicating what made the Deck viable and it looks like they have but we'll see

It definitely needs to sticks, one of the triggers is a little sticky, and on the software side the bluetooth has always given me issue -- but I don't know if that's the controller or a Windows problem. I usually use it wired anyway, but the connection kind of sucks.
I also like symmetrical sticks because I was a PS1&2 enjoyer, and I get more out of that orientation with emulating, too.

Xbox controllers are really interesting. You assume that they've been "exactly the same" since the Xbox One, but they've had dozens of small model revisions. If you need a replacement part, you need to get it specifically for that model because some parts like the left and right bumpers will have radically different lever mechanisms based on the model.

Well that proposes that you're always playing at a desktop scenario. The Steam Controller concept was partially thanks to the whole Big Picture mode that eventually stemmed off into SteamOS for a portable or console style experience on whatever platform you can get Steam on. So it's intended for people who aren't playing at a desktop with M&KB setups, or for those who want to use the customization to go beyond a standard controller basis.

>It's the same logic as gyro retards
Gyro doesn't even change ergonomics and it is cheap enough that the manufacturer isn't going to lower the cost from leaving it out. The worst thing that could happen from having gyro in every controller is that games could be made with a faster pace and without aim assist. You should support gyro even if you exclusively play on keyboard and mouse since it enables better games that don't have to cater to analog stick aiming.

Literally anything. Simulated mouse input for menus, Hotkey button pad, scroll wheel. In Dark Souls I use one as an extra joystick that automatically holds circle to sprint when my finger is at the pad's edges. In a conventional shooter, mapping 1-9 for weapon swapping to the pad is common. In RTS you can use mouse regions so that the pad's space translates directly over the portion of the screen with just the minimap. The pad also has capacitive touch that can be mapped to anything, including swapping out layers that change the behavior of the rest of the controller.

I will never understand why we still have to use virtual keyboards on consoles in 2025. There's surely better ways to fucking type.
For example: Rainbow Six 3 on the Original Xbox used radial typing, the whole alphabet was in a circle and you angled the analog stick and pressed A to type a letter. Even just a tiny bit of practice would be faster than any virtual keyboard. And that was over 20 years ago. The concept could EASILY be improved, adapted, built upon.

Joystick+gyro is better for FPS games.

second of all, one of the best but rarely mentioned input options for trackpads are directional swipes
directional swipes give you FIVE new inputs, up, down, left, right and trackpad press, these are quick motions too, so they are excellent for switching weapons in an FPS
like some other guys mentioned, theres also virtual menus, which are fantastic for slower paced games
even for games with OFFICIAL controller support, these are a godsend
you know Elden Ring has a pouch to quickly use up to 4 different items right? well unfortunately, to use an item in the pouch, you need to press Y + a direction on the Dpad, meaning you cant move and use the pouch at the same time, UNLESS, you use the right trackpad and map it to directional swipes or a directional pad, and map it to Y+UP, Y+DOWN, etc, its incredible, vastly improved Elden Ring for me

I was hoping the analog sticks would be at the top similar to the Steam Deck and Wii U controllers - I'm usually not a huge fan of dual sticks at the bottom (though they seem to be high enough up on this to where it'll be more comfortable than the average DualShock).

Swipes and breaking down the touchpad into an array of 'buttons' was something you could do with DS4Windows for years as well. Even if the touchpad location of the Dualshock 4/5 is a little troublesome, it was great to have anywhere from two to more than ten possible distinct inputs and macros, a profile for each game.
Having two pads in a much better to reach position will have great fucking potential.

try playing some autistic simulator or a game made before 2006 that requires keybinds. the reason for the hype on this controller is playing games made for mouse and keyboard like a console requires autistic use of the touchpad radial menu. its actually feasible to play a RTS on a steam deck without enough controller bindings.

Custom input mapping. You could use swipes and presses to have a lot of extra inputs and macros. Break it down into quadrants to press, or a command rose to swipe.
For example... map the pad into eight sectors to emulate an eight-way weapon wheel. You could instantly switch on the fly instead of holding the left bumper to bring up the wheel then use the analog stick to select the weapon.
More ways to not need layered, contextual inputs that take control away from other actions (often important things like movement and camera control) which virtually all modern games have to do in order to cram all of their bloated inputs into the limited xinput scheme.
Two pads, more inputs.

I used DS4 to play DCS. You basically can use gyro to replace trackIR (tracks your head, important part of flysims) and fly full fidelity aircraft with more ease. It was an understandable concession to make simple little flat bricks with buttons on the face in the 80s, but instead of evolving the core shape as they added to them, they started making Frankenstein monsters. Shoulder buttons, then grips, then thumbsticks, then they kept trying to experiment with the placement and shape of those things based on complete nonsense beliefs... all the while you're still holding a little awkward brick in your hands that is desperate to be "ergonomic."

8bitdo ultimate c2 or something like that, it has hall effect for no drift and 2 extra buttons between the triggers that can be mapped to any other button so no more clicking joysticks for me, the Valve one has ugly trackpads so I'm not touching that shit

the upside of the trackpad over thumb sticks is you can tune the curve of acceleration and sensitivity, and even go as far as making it act like a trackball where if you swipe it it caries momentum. it really depends
>>725707842
ya probably this, gyro enabled with the haptic thumbstick face is a pretty good combo. you can also combine the gyro with a keybind so it will only do it while you are aiming down sights or stuff like that

Because you don't want to type with analog stick or swap to KB everythime you need to type anything in-game?

>imperceptibly higher latency
Be honest with me. Do you even use the analog gimmick at all? If you care so much about latency, literally just use a regular switch and a wire. Get silvers or something with a higher actuation point and then call it a day. 1000hz is basically standard now and it will always be faster. A wire will always be faster. You can't have this long argument about latency and wireless and then suddenly say uh no actually it arbitrarily stops mattering when it's beneficial to my argument.
>And the battery life bit was also retarded, wireless peripherals last for days
A wireless keyboard, especially one running ZMK should last for MONTHS even on a hummingbird tier battery. HE power consumption was shit.

besides that's supposed to be a point for consoles how? you can't even do that on them at all and doing so permanently bricks your console into offline mode and a hardware ban if you violate the self imposed curfew
