normally you would play Trickster and scale energy shield, but that build was gutted
considering you can use a slowass 2h mace with these skills and ignore attack speed, i would likely start at the bottom of the tree where the mace nodes are. shadow only has 3 trap clusters so it would provide less damage than the melee part of the tree, you can get throw speed from your jewels.
you cant leech so Slayer is out, aspeed is useless so zerker is out. I would likely play a Warden because Tinctures work on traps, Champion might be okay as well. I think any Shadow ascendancy would be less DPS than simply pathing along the bottom of the tree with the slowest highest damage weapon possible.

I think Slayer is definitely the way to go at the start because it is just strong by default and then later on you can transition into Champion if you manage to get all the fort stuff. However, I am torn. Should I go one handed + shield or two handed?

Honestly, with smite + wrath you deal decent enough damage to clear up to yellow maps while holding a stick. A decent rare or unique gets you into reds. However, to really start farming more juiced content you either need a decently crafted rare or to get something more expensive.

Take your current total max mana, get 20% of that and thats what you'll degen out of mana to regain that much life per second, yes you can just have enough mana regen to outpace it, but your HP has nothing to do with it. You can take a chieftain have a simple start, easy leveling, easy mapping, then invest for a long ass time eventually hitting dot cap with RF.
