But you're certainly not just "a dude in the right place at the right time" Because there's fate/destiny/prophecy at work and it's apparent from the very start.
In fact Skyrim's start is less "chosen one" in the beginning than the rest. Or at least to the player's knowledge there's no fate or destiny at work. Just you're a prisoner about to be executed and by chance a Dragon attacks and you are able to escape because of the chaos involved. Then the 2 people you can escape with will try to get you recruited to their faction, Not as anything particularly special just "hey they seem good in a fight, and we can use good fighters". Then you deliver a message to the Jarl. The Jarl just has a job that's suitable for an adventurer.
All up until this point, it's not really apparent to anyone that you're anything special. Just there was a dragon attack and you escaped.
The first hint that there's anything special about you is when you learn a word from the word wall in bleak falls barrow, but other characters can learn Thuum too, including greybeards and Ulfric, so you're not THAT special yet.
It's not until you kill your first dragon that it's confirmed you're not "just a dude" when you can absorb a dragon's soul.
