Gaben is not holding a gun to your head and forcing you to sell on his store. You and every other developer, indie and AAA alike, each as individual rational market participants, are independently making the decision to sell on his store yourself, because you understand very well that you will make far more money with him than without him.
>>530618617I can't even afford the fee to get into his store...

concept art progress
I think it'd be fun if devs burnt a bunch of copies of their games and then rented out tiny booths to sell their games in person at twice-yearly convention.
>>530611426>>530612234making a fotm hype game you should expect it to be forgotten like that
the game has served its purpose by making millions and because of its high reviews it will have a strong sales tail for a couple years even if people don't talk about it
>>530618617The only thing that would topple Steam like Netflix toppled Blockbuster, is Games as a service.

i have done nothing but bedrot since demoday ended
>>530618617Itch.io typically takes a 10% cut from sales, but developers can set this percentage anywhere from 0% to 100% based on their preference. This flexible revenue-sharing model allows creators to decide how much they want to support the platform.

>>530618734>>530618913>>530619230The market would be so much worse without Gaben at the head. If the industry doesn't provide customers with a single platform that conveniently hosts all their favorite games, then they'll create that platform on their own called The Pirate Bay. does a game story need to have meaning to be good? can it be... just a story?
I had no idea that the steam summer sale was so good for getting wishlists. I've gained like 200 since the start of the sale.
>>530625357personally, I have a specific story to tell the world so I have to make games which relate to said story. But if you don't have a particular story you care about telling, a game can be successful just as a toy.
>>530625357Unless it's an rpg a story is basically irrelevant. It's a game not a book.

Trying to simply innovate in this basic plot is how you end up with modern millenial marvel writing.

Designing a game for people in India and I find myself needing to optimize like I'm Chris Sawyer in 1999.
Pic related.
>>530627575>Designing a game for people in IndiaIs it a game to teach them how to use the toilet?
>>530627543Blame microshart for deprecating mono without dotnet core being ready for prime time.
>>530626846Let tell you the biggest redpill I have gotten after years of writing and studying writing.
A good story is nothing more than the basic plot I just told you, but the story is always about a hero party fighting some enemies.
And then you make a diferent villain arc in a diferent town and the story is about getting a list of items to defeat him.
That's enough for like most of the classic JRPG stories.
It's always go to a new town/dungeon, and then get a bunch of items from npcs to solve their problem, like getting a knife that was stolen by rats that is needed to make a cake, or find the ingredients to make a potion to heal a sick priest that know the secret to open the door to the dungeon.
JRPG writing always boils down to opening locked doors by getting some key item a npc needs to open it.
That's basically it.
A good advice would be to start with an anime dere archetype and then add a bunch of like mental issues, like fears, broken dreams, feelings of like not being good enough, talking alone, being ego maniac, being proud, being compulsive lier, not having a father figure, being always hungry, being always desiring money.
A good way to write, is to think more in terms of characters having a fatal flaw, like you could start with the christian 7 deadly sins, and then because of trauma, like a character being killed, they have a sudden emotional transformation to overcome their flaw.
Also, another tips is that depending on their type, a character death is usually diferent.
Minor characters deaths are for making the MC party have an emotional reason to change their ways.
A major character being killed is a really big deal for the story, usually only done on the big climatic events.
Npcs and cannon fodder are killed to showcase villains being dangerous.
Minions are killed to show the party skills.
Minion Generals are killed as punishment for failing to defeat the player party by the big evil boss or as character minor plot event.
>>530627543>ive been waiting for godot to add back web export for C# since january 2023didn't they literally just announce they got c# web export working again in 4.5? did they cancel it?
>>530627954>>530626846I forgot to add.
Is not necesary to kill the characters.
It's more related to making them stopping the fight in some way.
Like a professor that has to move away because he got a newer job.
Or a friend that has to leave because he has to go and study in another nation.
That's also a way to do a similar thing to kill the characters, but without having them actually killed.
Villains can instead go to jail, give up their evil ways, be injured so they cant keep fighting, etc.
Also, the story doesn't need to be about killing, it can be a competition to win a contest, or win the love of a girl.
In most cases the story has to be about two groups of characters who has to be in competition about something they can't give up so they have to fight or compete until the end.
Also, don't forget a lot of the best stories deal with the MC having ideas about giving up or thinking he's not good enough for the task, or asking why he was chosen to suffer.

That should give you the fundamentals of writing a story, much better than 99.9% of anime fags.
After that try to like watch a bunch of videos on mythology and history to learn how to write something deep and with substance and not just le funny anime girl getting naked.
Learning the fundamentals of philosophy also would help with things like understanding the things that make story stop being a fictional story, and become more a tool to use the characters to discuss about politics and morality.
Most writers focus on writing the style, but only the masters write stories that have substance.

>>530642815Did you submit your game to the Jam? Plenty of feedback given there.
>>530645803makes me remember
Been having a depressing thought lately.
For years and years I've been very passionate about video games, and the only reason I can make my own now is because I was able to get over my addiction of video games. Now if I end up making a really good game, one that some people will want to spend hours upon hours playing, then in essence I am robbing them of their potential, and their time that they could be using to do something productive and get away from video game addiction. In the other hand, if nobody enjoys my game, then that's also gonna be depressing. It would be different if more people would get inspired to make their own game from playing a great game, but most consumers only feel "inspired" to spend even more time on the game.
>>530675241if you believe video games are bad for you, you'll have serious trouble making one, because of how negatively you framed them. it's like trying to quit eating pizza and then starting to make pizzas. you gotta make up your mind first. do you like video games or not?
>>530675042Whenever I try to rotate the apple all I see is the universe and glimpses into the future. Then it turns into a pair of boobs. Where am I on this scale?
>>530675574I like video games, but for me a perfect video game would in essence be a game that makes you want to return to real life and get your shit together instead of one that you'll want to return to over and over again. Same way I only played a game like Ico once but it was instrumental in finding my life path.
I know that sounds pretentious and gay.

This is a cautionary tale.
I use Godot on an old PC running Windows 7.
After installing .NET 8.0 for use with Godot 4.41 my memory usage went through the roof. I mean one frame per 30 seconds, 99% physical memory usage, multiple hard system crashes. After shutting down every other program I was able to get my project to compile as long as I left it alone for ten minutes.
After multiple attempts I was finally able to find this: https://github.com/dotnet/msbuild/issues/8404
>.NET 7 is not supported on Windows 7. The large memory usage is a known bug that was marked wont-fix: dotnet/runtime#79469.
After uninstalling .NET 8.0 and setting the project to use 6.0 I was able to run normally. The only downsize is it means I'm locked out of future Godot versions because it only supports 8.0.

best way to teach your kid something is to constantly tell it that it's hard and it's gonna take a lot of time. lmao. i get why people say this, it's to tell your brain "it's fine to feel overwhelmed". but what it actually does is telling you that you shouldn't do it because... it's hard and takes a long time.
this mindset does more harm than good. ideally you learn things playfully.
same as people constantly telling you to not expect money from what you are doing. that's like telling your brain "this is not gonna make money".

Is it illegal to model a real world object? Like, say I have a hammer. Is it illegal to model a 3D hammer that is pretty much a copy of the real one? Assuming you remove brand marks and stuff. >>530697668I love games, but building them is complex. Thats why I rather build web apps. Much simpler to make
>>530697651>also it looks like mobile shovelwareTo be fair, those are placeholder shaders. Of course it will look cheap. My real vision is to make it graphically and soul-ly look like Gran Turismo 3. I mean, people always wanted to nostalgia bait PS1 graphics... why is there no PS2 graphic era nostalgia bait?
>even tranime spammer cannot make a tranime gameI won't make an anime games on my first solo dev project m8. I know my limit
>>530697879Wtf I have players?
>>530697668Eating is a necessity. Videogames are categorically different in that they are simply a means of spending time (regardless of how enriching you consider it). By way of that fact it competes with any other elected way of spending time, whereas eating competes with nothing as it exists in its own category. It's possible to dislike almost every game made/that is being made and wish for one that you would be willing to spend your time on. I hardly play anything these days and the game I am making is one that I would want to play.
>>530697879I need an enabler gf in my life man...
>>530698059fun is a necessity unless you enjoy things like depression and burnout.

I even started to Bocchipost to annoy bocchiposters because I felt in the meme, but the actual anons annoyed were others kek.
Probably need your own engine for a Simcity-like right?
>>530698262That agrees with my post. Discretion and choice within eating is "would I prefer rice or potato for a starch? Or just fruit? Actually I only really like milk." whereas video games compete within the choice-world of "do I want to play a game? Or would I rather read, or watch this movie. Actually I'd rather just get drunk and listen to music."

do you remember what was spammed in this thread in 2015? no one does
>>530698448>I decided to add to the problemany community that gets its kicks out of acting like idiots will eventually become idiots
the problem with bocchi specifically is it's a self-defeatist, low-energy, cringe-type meme in the same way that pepe used to be. Nowadays pepe has become somehow weirdly based and now Tomoko/whatever the latest no-lifer self-insert character is have become the cringe.
>>530698587You only need your own engine if you're making something that intends to model a lot of shit all happening simultaneously and even then, I've heard from other devs you can make it all work in Unity or whatever, you just have to learn what the processing cost of everything is.
I would still make my own engine if I were making a Factorio-like game where it simulates vast swathes of land simultaneously with collisions or other physics properties. Simcities doesn't really have physics so as long as your textures and models are reasonable I don't see it becoming a problem.

the godot C# web export fix which has been worked on for a while by a nonmaintainer dude might have to be scrapped because maintrooners are pushing C# to just another extension instead of doing their job maintaining it as a main option along gdscript
so tl;dr the godot foundation lied about C# being a priority just to bait unity refugees and is now slowly flushing it down the toilet

>>530701872If i may, yes i think that's the trick man. Nostalgia is a major thing that motivates you to craft. Also, making modern twist of an old game technically means rejuvinating a lost genre.
>>530701987>and is now slowly flushing it down the toiletI'm perfectly fine with this. gdscript is fine and mono sucks big nuts.
>>530701987good thing I never even considered dropping unity. when they announced that runtime fee, I knew it was going to end with them backtracking and sweetening the deal to quell the outrage. while everybody was losing their shit over moving from unity, I was happily chipping away at my game.

>>530685467Most flight sims have lived in a grey area of the law since the genre started. The Activision lawsuit with GM about using Humvees ended up in their favor, which is to say that depicting military equipment as a part of authenticity is probably okay. However it's not well-trodden legal ground. EA and Bell settled out of court (BF4 calls its helicopters Venoms and Vipers, which is a Bell name), probably because they didn't want to help set legal precedent. Some games will actually seek out real licenses for their jets. Ace Combat for example licenses everything. That is however, the exception.
You can PROBABLY depict accurate military equipment. You are SAFER if you never call them by copyrighted or trademarked names, and instead only by their public domain military designations. E.g. don't call your missile a SIDEWINERยฎ, just call it AIM-9. You are SAFEST if you just make up something legally distinct, which is the route Activision has gone in COD because even though they won their case against GM, it still cost them a ton of money and they'd rather not have to deal with it again.
Something else funny, is that I think some companies are wizening up to the military designation thing. Raytheon now trademarks not just the Sidewinder name, but also AIM-9X. If you want to hear more about stuff like this, there's actually a very well made and researched video on the subject. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okMhLCaPuuM
>>530703947do what you want, I just think unreal is a really bad option for a solo dev unless you explicitly know what you want and already know how you want to do it. also blueprints suck to design complicated systems with so you're forced into c++ which I am sick of using. >>530702493>Godot over Unity for a 3D GameIf you like the Godot workflows and GDScript enough over Unity that you're willing to overlook the shortcomings it has in 3D. >>530705901We're doing a 2D isometric game in which godot has amazing tools. Unreal would be stupid for it, the person asking the question was doing a 3D game. Of course a zoomie like you would have terrible reading comprehension.
>>530705865Nothing to do with visual style. Godot's 3D import process, APIs, and especially its physics, are a lot more obtuse and annoying to work with compared to Unity. There's a good chance if you have to import anything more trivial than a static single mesh model that you're going to be looking up how to do write a custom asset importer. You can tell Godot started out as a 2D engine first. I'm not saying any of this is impossible, but it's going to be more work and more code compared to Unity.

>>530706567If you want to use it, use it. Unity is better suited to 3D. Godot is better suited to 2D. All other things equal, you use the best tool suited for the job. Personally I really want Godot to get better at 3D, because there's a lot I like about it. It's very well suited for throwing together games. They've made great and important strides recently, but it's not quite "Unity replacement" good yet in 3D. Especially not for my purposes since I make heavy use of physics and complex colliders.
>>530706210I don't like that you can't reference existing textures within your project, though without manually pointing them in a direction after import. That's big doodoo for me but I deal with it. Not going to write a custom importer to fix that.

The only reason people pretend Godot is based is because it's perceived as the underdog open source thing vs. Unity. It's still junk and you're basically using a worse Unity so you're essentially another Unity kiddie.
On the other hand Raylib is not based either. It's a discord-centric technology where you need to be involved in "the community" because the documentation is lacking and unprofessional.
The only professional tool with competent documentation would be... SDL3.
