Playin' FF5 PR. First time playing FF5. I was going after the spell Flame Thrower from Prototype, but none of my regular moves were hurting it. I had no clue how I was supposed to take this guy down, and so I just started trying shit. I eventually tried Goblin Punch. I had no idea what it did, but my jaw dropped when it did 1-2k damage. I didn't know that Goblin Punch did 8x damage if you are the same level as the enemy you are attacking. I turned a 5k HP enemy into a 4-hit chump. It was very cool.

I remember a while back someone did a comparison between DLC completion rates of different games and FFXV's was comparatively pretty low, and that was just the first episode. With each episode release the numbers started dwindling so following an internal review they would have concluded that a Season 2 pass wouldn't be sustainable and it would be for the best to cut it short and wrap things up with Episode Ardyn. A genuine shame as I really enjoyed the DLC, and and the missing Episodes would have been a better outcome than the team spending the next 5 years on Forspoken. If you want an in-depth opinion : it's very rough. The positive is, it is perfectly doable solo (I did the entire game with trusts and only had trouble with one boss near the very end), the game often makes its premium units available in campaigns (mainly the super supports + Shantotto II, the best dps of the entire game), but even the recent QoL gives you plenty of extremely good trusts that'll carry you for a huge chunk of the story.
On the other hand, you'll have to come to terms pretty quickly that most things people liked about XI, mainly its more community oriented challenges, don't exist in the game's current state. You'll stomp through areas with very little difficulty, and the actual battle system is very dull by itself (doubly more so since 90% of your fights are automated). You'll see quite a few areas that were originally made to be with groups of players that had every limitation removed and become far less interesting. So mostly, it's lot of running around watching everything die + occasionally waiting for timegates to open.

Still, if you're in the right mindset, I think it's a nonetheless interesting relic of its era. It's not really a story-oriented game like XIV is, it doesn't have a long running plot but it does some neat things with its more contained narratives. At the very least, you'd do yourself a disservice not listening to its excellent OST, and some of its areas are among the best the series offers.

Be mindful it's very long and you'll need a lot of time to finish all the main stories. Also, don't hurt yourself and install Windower, a lot of the add-ons are fantastic QoL.

I think the number is becoming more and more of a hindrance. Personally, I would really like to see FFXX...and it would be really, really great if CS1/CS2/CS3 were the ones behind all those games. But if they don't feel like the number is serving them anymore, then it might be smart to try and dump the number sooner rather than later. And it might also be smart to try and closely partner with as many talented studios as you can so that you can bring them into the FF umbrella instead of trying to make all the games yourself.

This franchise desperately needs its free to play console game. It's not a Genshin clone or a gacha game or Fortnite. It's a Final Fantasy game, that operates in the same arena. A modern day multiplayer game that can replace FFXIV as a money maker on console/PC and mobile. FFXIV is totally dated shit, and kids aren't going to play it. Like there wouldn't be 100 players running around in free roam with you. It would be more Souls-like where you see the echoes of other players that are connected to your server, you won't see them idling everywhere. Phantom airships may fly by, phantom players exploring/shopping/fighting will appear and disappear. When you join an activity like a race/minigame/dungeon, then you will get matched up with the other players online and you can see more of them and interact with them. But not during free exploration, when you're completing story missions solo or with a party. That should be a focused, Final Fantasy experience that you get to play co-operatively. And that would be where interacting with other players would really come in. Private friends you invite, or send out a public request and other random players of different Jobs would join up.

Baldur's Gate 3 style co op campaigns that take place across updates/expansions. Online components are on top for matchmaking and all activities. Say you discover a super dungeon with your crew of 3 random people in freeroam who you joined up, but this dungeon requires 6+ or something. Same thing with races and mini games or card games and such. A PVP arena element for party duels in a 3v3 or 4v4 mode. Those seperate modes would have the online hubs/menus where you interact before and after like your typical multiplayer game. Imagine you could sit down and play Queens Blood with some online matchmaking. Chocobo racing with online matchmaking.

Fun action gameplay, online co-op, mini games, Jobs and a custom character that you build.
