working on a heavily SMT inspired skirmish wargame ( other major influences are Mordheim and Lancer/Icon from Masiff Press)

FEATURING:
Trinity Press Turn action econom //Phase 1: Leaders act with a free ap, normal combat begins with move actions. Phase 2 demons can consume MAG to gain AP to spend on actions or hold in attack or defense mode for reactions, and during phase 2 each player activates one unit at a time going back and forth, with leaders acting again; normal movement happens here . Phase 3 and phase 4 the player with the most remaining AP activates all their demons.

10/11 stats// Str Dex Agi End Luq Int Per Mag Wis Cha and Reason(players only, this is a funky stat like azeroth's mastery but allows you to crit stack or enable hybrid builds better) Each stat contributes to at least 3 facets of a character. Every stat except luck (and sometimes reason) either applies to raw damage or a damage bonus.

16 elements// Fire, Flood(water/ice), Sky(wind/elec), Soil(earth/plant) (Elementia) Force, Rush, Metal, Havoc ( Physika) Nuclear, Psionic, Gravity, Digital ( Technika) Bright, Dark, Lunar, Occult (Anima) Notably there are tons of extra elemental magics in this game, with technical crits being a major feature and each element having access to more than just the typical shock/burn.

this is just some of the combat information which will start off the playtesting. World War D is going to be balanced for pick up and play, but over time I would like to make several shapes for full campaigns with a doom tracker that leads to various endings ( like betrayal on house on the hill) , digital tools so normies can button mash through the tabletop game ( necessary for managing so many character sheets, COMP//CON is the gold standard for table top games right now) and a talking 3-d printer with rider-belt style call outs that flash prints 3-d miniatures. Some summoners will be able to forcibly fuse with an enemy demon that is low on MAGA.

I want an extremely bloated compendium/bestiary/monster-manual. Ideally when the digital tools are set up you will be able to load up dozens of LCP files and randomly fuse Goomba or Orlanth. I want the bestiary to be broad enough so that if you aren't in the cathedral of shadows looking at your fusion results you should be surprised. I expect to release batches of 20 or 40 demons at a time, and I want at least 528 demons in the base game, one for each of the 44 major arcana, across the games 10 levels, plus level 0 and the epic levels beyond 10. Units have a 'Roman Level' which covers 0 through 11, and they also have a 'Total Level.' A character who is roman level two with three advancements would be level twenty three. ( 13th edition dnd let players earn part of a level up so they could get a small advancement of their choice at the end of each session) this gives you lots of opportunity for advancing your demon but roman level will dictate things like weighing the power level of an enemy group, or how much mag it costs to keep your dude out each turn.

16 elements is less than P1 or P2. P1 has 33 ( the mason number) elements, and p2 has 22 ( like the major arcana of the thoth tarot). I've tinkered with a few other versions of my element list-one had nerve as a physical element and another had two elemental cubes( splitting sky into wind and thunder, flood into water and ice, soil into earth and leaf,and fire gets to go with electric in this version)ultimately I think the set of 16 looks best on a character sheet.

as for 'wide but shallow' people accuse SMT4 of being that because the demon system is kind of underbaked . I want to move lots of the cool stuff we saw in unique demon skills and passives from persona v and smt v back into the core stat and skill systems- those are things you can tinker with in the velvet room. You are right about the game taking ages-this game design NEEDS a demon summoning program to manage your 10 character sheets.

i am designing this game to populate card shops for when MTG crashes. Mido is based on a real person, and that man's autism killed magic the gathering. Demon Fusion became polymerization, and polymerization was the main thing YGO did that MTG didn't when YGO first came out. That lead to them playing Elder Dragon Higherlander/ Commander / Deck Masters in the cartoon which got most of america's card gamers to switch to that meme format, leading to universe beyond and secret lairs and gay atraxa negen nigraggorn bullshit that is going to crater the game.

So , moon shot idea, but if we had a game played with flash printed miniatures that looked like 'monster in my pocket' ( where pokemon gets its name from ) they would be worth less than the smart bases they are standing on, or the digital dice that connect to the Tower, so you could easily trade with people without looking at god damn ebay.

in theory I dont think I would ever need to charge for the game. You sell printers and spool and digital dice, smart bases and accessories. I might charge people to be accredited judges or actuaries too.

of course if you do some very specific ritual to summon Odin beacuse you want to use your odin mini there should be high quality sculpt options, for the hobbyist side of wargaming.

You should be able to flash print a miniature for the unit you fused in the middle of the third round of combat.

If the core combat is good enough then feature creep is not a bad thing. Eventually I want the engine to support both majin tensei style gridded skirmishes for pvp and 3x2 rows for random encounters during solo or offtable play. I'd like you to be able to level and social link your demons and spend downtime within the demon summoning app and update the blockchain with the progress made in each PC(player compendium).

The first playtest is going to be designed for two players drafting among a fixed pool of 40 demons. Campaign elements and down time will come later.

stats themselves should be powerful enough that getting +5/+10/+20 of a stat ( these passives are from PQ) is worth a skill slot

Can they specialize in a single element (like a pure fire mage for example) and blast their way through the entire game?
Or do they have to diversify to be able to answer to all kind of threat (though it is much less of an issue here since those games are usually played in groups)?
Also from what I understand, there's 9 types of damage and hence that many type of damage formula and reduction?
Do you really expect players to keep track of them all when playing on the top of a table?
Most people can only bother to make a character sheet and roll dices at most and dump all the work on the GM.

Complexity/Tracking>
I don't expect the players to track a ton of things, I expect the demon summoning app to track things for them which will allow and enable the kind of pedantic complexity that I have on offer. Attack damage ( physical, magical and dynamic) and damage bonus ( exploitative, reactive, technical, critical, co-op and focus/charge) are not quite the same thing. Raw damage effects every time you hit, the other bonuses happen only if you trigger them in combat.

Yes players will be able to hyper specialize. However they should not be able to do everything by themselves and their newest daemons will be a higher level than the player for the majority of specializations. Players are going to need to rely on their Daemons, and if they are missing a necessary specialization they can try and use the daemon summoning app to fuse mid combat. This is a narrative skirmish wargame like mordheim or frostgrave. For a big co-op battle say a team of 4 against a NPC I would probably half the typical maga budget for each PC.

On one hand I'd like to go full Doom mode with the MC, but on the other hand I don't want to spend 50 years grinding this dude up so that he's not a liability since losing any human companion seems to be an insta-game over.
Gameplay has improved drastically after the second boss, with the demon types and fliers actually starting to matter beyond unga bunga phys or unga bunga magic. A little bummed it took about 20 chapters to make it here and the map layouts are still overly simplistic but what's done is done.
As for the story I'm still really confused as to exactly what's happening. Are we in a simulation of some sort or am I thinking too deeply into this?

Found a secret encounter while taking an opportunity to create a Fire Emblem style conveyor belt of grind at the bottom of a pain in the ass optional dungeon map and almost immediately found what I believe to be the solution to her predicament in a legendary sword that undoes seals. But now I have to do the whole dungeon again. fffffuck.
Also found a potentially useful glitch in the extremely unlikely event that anyone speedruns this game. I was given the legendary blade when my inventory was full and it seemed to cause some kind of issue with movement values when I tried equipping it giving me infinite movement space directly north and south but nowhere else. I toyed around with it a little and interestingly you can also bridge between allies to give yourself a few more north/south rows to work with. Glitch fixes itself when you discard something from your inventory, equip it properly and end the turn. If I had more time I'd experiment and see if it was just a quirk of the translation patch or something that also works in a vanilla rom.

I have an interesting question, if an SMT 1 remake were to be real would you want things to stay the same (like demons having a set moveset, no press turn, basically a HD version) or a revamped re imagination (Press-turn, demons can inherit moves , MC can use skills, recruit dark demons etc.)

Ideally it'd follow Nocturne's Remastered where you got the choice between the original mechanics or a modernization. Admittedly a bit bigger scale here than mere skill inheritance but the concept's the same, that the game can be played with either the original mechanics or a modernized setup (press turn or SJR mechanics leaning into demon co-op again) and as such its player choice. If one or the other than I'd hope it can go lean into having some modernizations (skill inheritance being the big one but perhaps changing how stats are and making MAG costs something the player can influence like in Raidou 1) without going overboard and switching from standard turn-based into press turn.

Digital devil saga 2 is one of my all time favourites in the franchise, it easily has my favourite version of press turn in the series to this day.
The only monkeys paw is, its not a demon fusion game, which may be a dealbreaker for some people. Its a party member game where the set number of characters transform into specific demon forms and you just learn moves from the mantra grids (they're basically just equip able items, every one has 3-4 skills on them)
Its two games but neither really works standalone, its pretty blatantly just one story split into two due to budget
I think they're pretty fantastic and if you enjoyed nocturne you should absolutely play them.
