Keep in mind that if you have consumption turned off, they'll all get penalties if there are service goods and complex food in the warehouse that they cant access. Also, if you're stockpiling them to unload them all at once, you're not "cheating" . You still would have gotten the same amount of reputation, it just would have been spread out over time. You can absolutely focus on glades and ignore resolve entirely, but it requires specific builds, usually tool production and a couple other things. But yes, you also can screw yourself over hard by opening too many if you cant combat the hostility

Yeah i know it, but it seem that its better to wait with complex food when you can get past the resolve threshold. Theres no resolve bonus to victory points if you dont get over said threshold does it? (As in, the citizen portraits dont glow blue). So its best to give them one basic food and save for the time when you can make over that bump?
At this part of the game glades feel like a bit of trap, because of the growing hostility and some maps having 30+ of them. As a explorer i just want to cut them all but i would probably fuck myself. Is there a hostility penalty on top of each open glade (solved or unsolved?) And what about opening glades during storm, because I see that I shouldnt supose to do it, is there some kind of multiplier malus?

small glades give less hostility than dangerous/forbidden glades

opening glades during a storm is usually fine, but there is one forest mystery that will give you a big resolve malus if you do it
Anonymous No.534912754 >>534918749
>>534902481
Game gets hard with prestige. You take whatever resolve you can get.

Whether you should pop glades or not is a situational thing. Do you need resources? Can you handle a nasty dangerous event? Are you able to clear orders and develop your settlement without clearing glade events?

If you're confident you can clear events (ie you have time and materials), then aggressively clearing glades can give you enormous advantages. A unique building (say, a termite nest) can completely change the economy/hostility management of a village.

>>534889053
Anyone else play it? I liked it, but the city building feels shallow at the moment. It does seem like the focus is more on the heroes/story. Fights feel much, much better.

If you hover over the red hostility bar it will show you a breakdown of the various additions and subtractions of hostility you have. D and F glades increase it by alot more than small glades. There are ways to counteract this which you have not unlocked yet, thoughbeit. You are right that it's probably best to stockpile, but I've seen atleast early on that when you have a lot of one type special food, they will pretty much always get pushed into blue. Well it depends on the species, too I guess. Some are hard to please early on, like beavers and humans, but they dont increase their threshold by that much overall. Meanwhile you can reach the threshold of harpies and lizards very early with some good finds or a food set up. It comes down to balance, really. You for example if you're close to the threshold for one group and you have some stuff they like, you should probably take the point sooner rather than later so you can have an extra bluprint to work with

This was by far the biggest settlement I've ever made. 100 villagers by the time I left I deliberately stayed longer than I should have to try and get the deed for sending 12 expeditions out on in one game. I didn't keep track of how many, so it ended up more like 15. Still didnt get the rainpunk foundry lol

I've gotten it before, but that was before they changed the achievement. It used to be finding both the rainpunk foundry and the homestead, but people said that it was impossible and pure chance, unlike most other deeds in the game. So they changed it to be just the rainpunk foundry, with getting both of them being a secret deed that unlocks a special decoration. It's basically impossible to get it, as it requires two random draws out of pools of like 18 and 12 respectively

what difficulty did you use and how'd you manage to avoid hitting the reputation cap? obviously don't turn in orders until you need to drop impatience enough, but otherwise. once it starts asking for complex food for the expeditions I always hit a wall or hit reputation cap

>>534955162
>>534955386
>better rewards
the majority of the world events feel out of touch with the entire game. the rewards are almost never worth it when its something that gets used up in one moment with no extended use, like your pic rel. almost all of those events could use rewards boosted by 4 or 5 times.
Anonymous No.534956967 >>534957212
>>534955634
I would refuse to turn in orders and disable service buildings so they couldn't reach the resolve threshold during the year, only turning them on when the storm came to avoid runaways. By the end of this, I was so close to having my impatience reach full that I literally paused and did the math to see if I could realistically wait for the current expedition to come back and survive. I would have had 30 seconds to spare, so I didn't risk it and just let the resolve end the game at year 11 or whenever it was. In order to get the 12 expeditions, you basically need to get an early porridge recipe building and a plantation. Eventually it will start asking for goods, too, but by that time you'll probably have enough to not have to worry about anything other than time. Also send them out at minimum resources so they come back faster

I somewhat disagree. Most of the rewards I think are fairly balanced. That one specifically was an easy one to deal with, so a reward of extra food and planks at the start of each settlement is pretty strong at giving you a headstart. I do like the more recent additions that give you new buildings or upgrades to work with temporarily, like the fire shrine from the wanderer or the tree shredder which I had last cycle.

The gambler, on the other hand, gives one of the harder challenges. 65% extra impatience growth is insane, especially without h'mans and early on before you have citadel upgrades. I agree. It either gets you like 100 service goods if you get an early building for it, or can help you clear an event without needing to buy stuff. If I ever get a trader and have nothing in particular I want to buy, I'll usually try to get 30 pottery or 30 oil, as they're a solid choice to keep incase of emergency

Fishman ritual site is one of the harder modifiers to handle. Not having orders doesn't just prevent you from getting half your bar filled up, but you also end up lacking the valuable resources they would have offered. Most importantly, parts. I try to hold off on this world modifier until later on when it's more easy to handle with citadel upgrades. You could supplement it with glade exploration, but personally I prefer trying to knock out two birds with one stone and getting the 18 points through resolve on this worldmod. It's difficult but doable. I will admit, however, that I only won because of the stormforged altar giving me good draws. Specifically the cornerstone that gives resolve boost per impatience point. I would not have survived without that

Right now it's just given an atmospheric pressure for the world and latitude for the Coriolis effect, figure out what the velocities should be. Really it should do some heat transfer with winds flowing hot or cold air around and rain falling based on the dew point but that's a lot more complicated.

So I was correct in my assessment of bats btw. They can be extremely powerful once you unlock the manorial court. Basically you can exile villagers and that simultaneously makes the bats gain resolve and gives an overall production boost to the village. There are cases where it's impossible to stop people from running away, anyways, so instead you could make that "official" and send them back to get the bonuses. You can effectively minimize the pops of 2 species and permanently favor bats, who will have insane productivity. It costs impatience to exile people, but I was able to easily exile 15 villagers in one game without being too stressed about impatience growth. Infact, I got the hidden from the queen cornerstone which removes the impatience gain, and ended up exilig 31 freakin villagers. Basically I kept 8 fregs and 8 beebs to work specialized jobs while the rest of the population was bats who were basically on max resolve just from existing. They had +15 just from the court man. That shit's crazy man

I dunno, I'm just asking. I love reading RPG rulebooks, with all the lore that goes in it, but I also love playing with scales, whenever I play an army or tactical game, I wonder how a duel would work in there (Warhammer RPG), and since World of Darkness is all about extremely small party and very dangerous fights, I imagine a bigger scale game of it would have extremely short and violent fights. Kinda like... I dunno, Command and Conquer or Tempest Rising, where units can die almost instantly to hard counters.
Meanwhile the garous would be kinda like Jedis in Star Wars Galactic Battleground: very expensive, very powerful, and either need overwhelming firepower, or very specific counters to take them down.

Without DLC it'll be missing a few neat additions the paid extra content has, but each major update still comes with free content tweaking. Like they just reworked/split a few hero classes for flavor and quality of life

Yeah one of the strengths is forming your own fantasy faction, to fight other fantasy factions. Make whatever traditional or weird fantasy race archetype ya like. You're not split by race since any race can really do anything now, it's your civilization's culture that matters. Earlier Age of Wonders games do it different and switch it up. 4 is just the latest and still getting updates
Some of the fluff of the previous games in the series is less frequent, more diluted, but in return it lets you make and combine anything. I still like killing evil orcs and goblins no matter what game I'm playing. Age of Wonders 1 feels the best with its storytelling justifying why I'm committing fantasy genocide, but in 4 nothings stopping me from making custom factions of enemies to fight if I don't like what the game pits me against

Anonymous No.535248570 >>535248961
Hey hey people.
Spiderfag here.
Today, I'm going to play a bit of the Scouring, before I get defeated by giant, hulky, muscular orcs.

I start a skirmish, with enemies being allowed to ally if they lose (which is irrelevant since this is a 1vs1), and a special script that spawn undead during the night. This is a terrible idea as we'll see later.
The game itself is very straightforward: you start with 8 peasants, you have gold, you have lumber, you have food.
Gold and lumber work "normally", but food work like in Supreme Commander, in the meaning that it's a flux that has to stay over 0. It's not a hard cap like in Warcraft 3.

Also, you can have several builders without additional cost.

I heard it's a single dev game, so yeah.
Anonymous No.535249930
Alright. Look at the bottom right. Do you see that icon with the potion?
This is how you heal your units: you build a potion shop, send your units there, and for 75 gold per potion, you can equip them. The cost stacks up really quickly. To give you an idea, killing a skeleton gives you 15 gold, and as you can see, a wolf gives 30 gold.
Anonymous No.535250303
Also, towers in this game are weak. They need to be garrisoned, and they only give your units something like some cover from ranged attacks, and very limited protection from basic units: the swordsmen can pull a ladder out of their ass and climb any building.

Normally, it wouldn't be an issue, but armies in the Scouring are, so far, very small and limited, so the humans only get swordsmen, archers and cannons so far.
And I made the mistake of never making any cannon because they consume 20 food each.
Anonymous No.535252561
At least the neutral AI is very stupid. Just move your wounded units out of the way and another will get the aggro.
Coupled with these decent archers, the troll falls.

The amusing part of the Scouring is how units attack buildings.
Only basic units and cannon can attack buildings, and they do so by climbing on them, killing the defenders, and then wrecking the building from the top.

Also a highlight from yesterday's games, my last game ended in a Domination victory playing as Japan in the vanilla Japan map (4 civs, Epic speed). Was aiming for a Science victory but ended up going for Domination and nuking the hell out of Poland who was in the lead before going after the other two, very fun

>on a village that is relatively safe, not much can directly kill anyone here, winning is basically garunteed as I have high resolve, a mist piercer, and tool production for caches
>get complacent as I will for sure win within 2 years
>mist piercer shows not alot of promise in the glades, except an intresting place that has 3 treasure stags all right next to eachother in 3 small glades
>these stags run into the glades nearby and force you to open them within a set time to get their rewards, which you can either capture or release for different things
>have never seen 3 right next to eachother, and especially one of each type
>plan on doing those 3, then promptly winning
>have good fuel production and can make a ton of purging fuel to combat blight rot

>but there's a forest mystery that I forgot about which spawns 2 flowers for every year that passes after a certain hostility level.
>this means my 3 blight fighters now had to deal with 24 flowers, nowhere near enough fighters. You need more than 6 to be safe like this.
>rush build a new post to get 3 more, the help but it's not enough
>hearth is corrupted and 3 villagers die before they get the blight under control
>pause and sit in my failure

>this is a MASSIVE cope and doesn't even fit with the chronology, as they would have died before the stags were even chased down into their glades
>the game itself doesn't keep track of deaths or runaways after each settlement is over, so there's nothing that would have reminded me of this afterwards, but I know in my heart that I failed here. The run is essentially half over. My original goal was no failed settlements (still okay) and no villager deaths (3 now).
>narratively speaking, having those 3 stags save the villagers is a more intresting choice, as it's not something that actually happens in game, and thus this situation never would arise out of normal gameplay. In the end, it's all just to feed my autism, though.
>I still want to play through an entire game where no one dies, but this shit takes forever man. I'm literally at 5 days worth of gameplay and I'm about 2/3rds of the way through the game. The last few seals take an insane amount of time. I'm not going to just restart now over this mistake. I guess my no deaths run will have to wait for the future, but desu, I dont know if I'm ever going to play this game again after this run if there wont be any more significant changes or dlc in the future
>what's more is that now I've exhausted my justification and if any more villagers do die, there will be nothing for me to do. They'll die and I'll cry. I cannot cheat anymore, I cannot reload when I make a mistake. I can't take this shit no more man.

Also I realize now that I potentially COULD have survived by building an as many blight posts so I could have one blight fighter for each flower, that way the would have probably burnt them all in time as they 3 or 6 wouldnt have had to go back and grab another fuel and walk to the next flower. But in my panic I wasnt thinking about building more, i was just worried if those 6 could do it in time, which they couldnt. I might have been able to survive if I had 15 fighters. Again, I had more than enough fuel, they just didnt burn them fast enough.

Also I am now on a village where the storm lasts longer every year, I have very highly increased hostility, and starting from hostility 5 people will die if they dont have access to service goods, which is one of the hardest forest mysteries to deal with. Also that reminds me of when I used to contribute to Unciv development. I did a lot of improvements and bugfixes on pathfinding but the majority of turn time is spent doing pathfinding. This also doesn't account for the fact that 1UPT means in some cases you need to move units in a certain order which is hard to translate to AI code. Not that non-1UPT games are immune to pathfinding based bottlenecks, I read through the C3X changelog just now and saw they redid harbor-to-harbor trade checking (basically pathfinding) and cut down turn time significantly.

>This also doesn't account for the fact that 1UPT means in some cases you need to move units in a certain order which is hard to translate to AI code
How fucking so? How come it's that hard, it's pretty much just chess-level AI?
Well, maybe more complicated, with range, HP, veterancy... But still, I expect a turn-based AI to be a lot smarter than a real time AI?
Anonymous No.535711925 >>535712402
>>535709789
It is a lot like chess but each new variable means decision making becomes exponentially more complex and there are so many more alternatives to evaluate. A lot of times movement priority is determined by some heuristic (settlers are top priority so move first, then their escorts, etc). Now imagine you have a unit on a hex and you have units in every neighboring hex and all units have 1 movement. If the central unit has a higher priority than the surrounding ones, it will try to move first but can't since all the surrounding squares have a unit in them. A human player would see that it's obvious to move one of the surrounding units to let the central one out, but how do you get the AI to understand it needs to move a lower priority unit first.

A less contrived example is one where you're moving a mounted unit to capture a worker but there's a unit exerting a zone of control in the way. If you have a slower unit that can't reach the enemy worker but can reach the enemy unit and kill it, obviously you'd use the slower unit to kill the defender so your mounted unit is better able to use its movement. Now figure out a way to handle this situation more generally while avoiding really bizarre behavior like AI getting overly distracted by lone units because they want to remove zone of control even when they don't want to go to that area of the map.

Anonymous No.535713886 >>535717840

It's significantly harder than chess level AI because a game like civ has many more possible play states and the rules around combat are more convoluted. In chess both players know what the other guy has and where and you take turns and each move can be an instakill. In civ you get to move all of your shit and you don't know how much shit the other guy has and depending on what you and the other guy bring each combat encounter can be anywhere from a suicide to one turn kill.
Anonymous No.535717840 >>535718926

Anonymous No.535718926 >>535726821
>>535717840
Well that's more of a strategic AI thing instead of tactical AI thing. The AI needs this kind of help because it would be extremely schizo if it didn't have full vision (or at least some kind of cheat knowing how powerful each nation is roughly) since it doesn't have the same intuition about it's own position a player has nor the ability to scout with intention. I meant it more in the sense about day to day tactical gameplay. It's somewhat pedestrian to code a basic value exchange evaluation where the AI decides to attack if it can inflict more damage in terms of for instance production cost than it loses in the attack but that leaves it extremely vulnerable to falling repeatedly into ambushes where it moves to attack in supposed favorable trades and then gets pummeled by ranged units or units from fog in a counter attack. It's extremely difficult to make an AI that can successfully do attacks in environment like that let alone one that doesn't cheat while doing so let alone making it so that's it's fun because technically strong AI isn't necessarily good opponent to play against. For instance the AI should avoid turttling and be proactive because it's more fun to outplay an AI than kill an AI that just defends till it dies.

I wrote about it here once, but
>every civ has a starting bonus (if you start as them)
>every civ has a different bonus/unique unit or building for every different era
>you only get the bonus for that era, e.g. if you pick japan in medieval era, there are different bonuses than if you picked them in modern era
>when you switch civs, you only get their gameplay bonuses, nothing aesthetic about your civ changes
>each civ can only be chosen once, so if you skip taking greece early because their medieval bonus is better, you might never get the chance to

the problem here is that you would need a ton of civs, because each player would need 1 for each era

it has to be carefully curated like
>Iberians-Visigots->Spain
to make any sense, you can throw in wild cards like Moors for the above mentioned example, unfortunately that requires time, effort and money, you cannot mindlessly sell nations
and then there are the outliers which don't have easy paths
>slavs/vlach/bulgarians/avars-huns->hungary

>pick your civ identity from a list, any future civ switches are tied to this identity (but maybe some civs overlapping like Rome and Celts could become Franks while Celts and Norse could become Normans, but only 1 civ can take an identity)
>no forced crises, instead have more organic transitions from things like barbarian uprisings, revolutions, rebellions, famine, plague, getting conquered by a neighbor that trigger a crisis (could do things like having later techs obsolete happiness bonuses or decadence raising the happiness threshold needed to make crises more likely)
>if you fail to handle the crisis, you are given an option to switch civs and pick a new bonus or remain as your current civ for a score bonus, and in some cases a new civ will be created even if the player doesn't switch civs (e.g., because of barbarians or revolution)
>crisis gives a story for how your new civ flourishes, such as the barbarian invaders intermingling with your culture in the lands they conquer which creates a hybrid culture which explains the civ switch
>depending on how you can handle the crisis, staying as your current civ can be a huge challenge or relatively easy giving more ways for a narrative to evolve

Every time I come back the game has changed enough to relearn it. I struggle with adding to many dumb ideas into one civ and have to retool it a few times.
I feel like I really struggle to keep my civ simple...
The plan was a criminal syndicate void born mega corp with permanent employment. I was hurting hard for commercial goods and alloys. This was from back when trade wasn't its own resource and wasn't negatively affected zombie's -25% output.
Dropped voidborn to allow more specialization into commercial goods and to have more room to put zombie pops. Now I've added corporate hedonism to see if the zombies will just be free amenities and unity but feel like I've lost my idea again.
Also I'm doing a megacorp with xenophobe so idk how dumb this is going to be...
