I have concluded that this game is dildos. The random tripping and constant rng weapon breaking are some of the most obnoxiously shit "mechanics" I've ever seen in vidya.
Regardless we press on towards Jerusalem. Took out the first boss and am currently solving puzzles to fix a pretty bad flood getting in the way of our progress.

It's late and I feel like posting the results to a bit of digging I was doing for a while.
Rokuro Saito said she wanted people to understand the metaphor behind this picture but what interested me was when she said the art was "inspired by symbols and allegories in Western paintings" because I really wanted to know what this meant. The flower and the "non-human being" appearing in a dream like state was inspired by Japanese folklore. So the only thing that could be inspired by western paintings had to be the pose and the positioning. So I finally found out what this is called, it's a pose called A-Framing that became very popular in the 1960s in the west and it started because of the movie poster for the Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only'.
The A-Frame was used before this obviously but sparingly. I can't find many old paintings that use it and one source I looked up said it was used in 19th century engravings but I've yet to find these images so I don't think she was going that obscure with it.
In comic books, the A-Frame is used to set up a mystery character as a tease for what the issue is about which could be part of the intention here but this is usually set up as like a showdown. Action movie posters also do this with the hero and the antagonist which is obviously not what we have here. But typically when the subject is laying down between the legs it's almost always for sex appeal. The subject towering about is supposed to show sexual dominance and the subject below being dominated. This is pretty much always the case in every movie poster I've seen with similar poses.

So after my research, I think the only thing I can come up with in regards to her comment about "Western paintings" is that she was looking up western movie posters with sexy A-Framing. The end of my search kind of feels like opening a "dead dove do not eat" paper bag. I don't know what else I expected. But if you want to read this article, go ahead:

I finally, finally, FINALLY beat DDS2.
Man. I still think it's a really good game, but it really is missing just that something that hooked me so hard with DDS1. I completed everything in 1, even Demifiend, but I feel no drive to do the same for 2.
I think the setting being less interesting, and the pacing feeling really fucked just hurt my motivation to play 2.1/3rd of the whole game feels like it's within the final dungeon.
Still, glad that I finally did finish it, and can move on to a new SMT game. Still gotta figure out what that is.

I hate to say it but does anyone feel that IV is heavily "overrated" right now? It has great worldbuilding and music I'll agree with that but it kinda drops the ball with everything else yet people jerk it off as the best megaten game. Even I can understand people saying III is the best but IV just feels like people just REALLY got into the whole Mikado atmosphere and then never got out to Tokyo. Gameplay is done significantly better in IVA and V and with how poorly balanced it is, it feels like ass going back to IV after playing the two. I'm also just massively disappointed in the story and it's quite similar to how V just fucks up the story but people seem to forget how scuffed the plot after the reactor is in IV.

I finished reading Devilman Lady. It was a retarded kusomanga, biggest recent disappointing read I had.
Do not be swayed by hot muscular demoness ripping demons in half. This manga is the worst MegaTen adjacent thing I read so far and it turns to shit after it's done with its middle part set in Hell.
I know the anime basically just decides to ditch most of the kuso aspects of the manga and instead turns into a yuri version of the og Devilman, which is preferable over whatever the fuck I just read.

This reading was spurred by noticing how Abdiel's fallen form's design is inspired by Devilman Lady even if as a character she riffs on Sirene (and does so badly, one of the lamest homages I can think of ). No idea why this homage in particular is a thing apart from aesthetic.
But there are other things that Atlus I think took from this shitty manga: one I remember clearly is the demonic gene, which is actually from before the story goes to shit.
Then at some point, the manga also references Kudan which while it *is* a kinda famous yokai I wonder if this is the story that set them on using it for Raidou.
Honestly there are more things that set off my alarms but I can't remember them now, at some point I just started speedreeding from the disappointment.

4 was my first game, and I went in blind, so getting to the bottom of Naruku and discovering that you were just on top of a shell over the ruins of Tokyo was one of the coolest reveals ever to me.

Hard agree on Go Nagai's work. Devilman is probably his best and it's still messy at times. It really ramps up in the mid-late stages of the story and it left me wondering if he just didn't know how to get from point C to point D cleanly, so it sort of just accelerated through the "war" part of the story. If you want to read Violence Jack you only really need prior knowledge of Devilman, which you already have. As for the other works referenced (as self homages more than anything) in Violence Jack... for Mazinger Z and Great, simply read the original mangas in chronological order. Then there's short manga like Guerrilla High and Cutie Honey that you can also read on top of it all. I tried reading Honey and it was too kuso for me even if loved the ugly monster women.

Getter is a different story from a different author (Ken Ishikawa) who was Nagai's friend (and frankly a better author) so it does not get referenced in VJ.

A little mixed on Soul Hackers so far. I think I may just be a somewhat spoiled by some of the later QoL I've gotten used to at this point, but Strange Journey (non-Redux) also felt better most of the time.
The pacing is go go go, which is fine with me, but the plot so far has been pretty reactive. From the basic premise of the game, I was hoping that the Spookies gang were going to be a more active group with their own goals. Maybe I'm not far enough yet. I'm at the manufacturing plant now.
The compendium is really solid and I think the Algonquin theming is different and neat for this series. Demon loyalty hasn't been something I've felt like I've had to pay much attention to, but that's also partially due to demons feeling really disposable. However, Nemissa kinda just blows everything not resistant to fire away since I've just got her fully specced for magic, so I've got a lot of room to fuck around with my team at least. I don't think the Zoma fusion system is really thrilling me so far, which is a shame because I like the base idea of it.
Not terribly difficult so far, though there were a couple moments where I just got fucked out of nowhere, reloaded, adjusted my team, and then cruised on through. Between Moowis and Mayone, dudes kind of just like jumping you out of nowhere in this game right after story events.
The dungeons have had decent gimmicks so far though. They're tame, with nothing super annoying, and that clears the bar for me.

Also I imagine most people here would be fine with you talking about P1/P2, I certainty talk about it relatively often without any pushback. If you want to play unmodded, I guess I'd recommend the original PSX version, but if you're open for mods the PSP version with the original soundtrack mod is my version of choice. Theres also a relatively recent UI mod that pretty accurately retains the spirit of the original if not the literal exact UI assets.

Even though kaneko works says that hero's statue is supposed to cry after beths death because of that reincarnation stuff, I noticed while playing that you can find the statue crying far before that point.
In general I notice the original SNES version of SMT2 is coded with toothpicks, glue and hope and is full of glitches and mistakes. Don't even need to bring up the extremely easy to trigger buff overflow glitch.

I really don't understand why they padded the P2 persona acquirement process with so much filler the way they did.
So unnecessary to remove the standard "negotiate > receive spell card" and add the whole element of needing to negotiate multiple times to get a ton of arcana cards to use as a purchasing currency for increasingly expensive personas.
Usually I'm pretty adamant on the idea that remakes shouldn't outright remove sloppy mechanics and should instead try and evolve them to keep the spirit of the original (for example I think removing tactics from all later revisions of P3 instead of elaborating on the mechanic is lazy and not in keeping with the spirit of the title)
I think this is one exception.
If P2 remakes just removed this feature entirely and reverted 100% to persona 1's spell card system it would be a 100% improvement, no drawbacks at all, no thematic loss anywhere.
Its like they had some weird psychological need to add limiting weights to the game or something. "Guys the story, characters, music, fleshed out setting and art design are too good, we gotta balance the scales in SOME form, make the gameplay just total dogshit, downgrade it from the predecessor for no reason. Make it look like we've never even made one of these games before. Alright, ship it!"

Something I saved elsewhere. NTA but I do kinda agree Yoko's pretty touchy feely with Tao. Despite that, I didn't see yuri romance. So I dunno if you can claim Yoko's same touchy feeliness is suddenly romantic with Vkun just because it's a guy instead. The Adam and Eve metaphor is what pushes it but that's also interpretive. Also do people who see it as romantic not have a problem with her pulling it out of her ass suddenly? There is no build up at all and she's not bitter about being "dumped" in law. They didn't just suddenly rewrite the soulmate aspect of the Nahobino in the original game and sideline it randomly with Yoko. The new route only pushed it further and expanded on the concept. It's central to the themes present in the game.

Whats wrong with EP's use of kandori? I feel like your quote of the star wars meme implies its out of nowhere or unexplained but they both explain how (rumour meme magic) and have a reason for bringing him back (fast tracking the new world orders technological development)
