So that I and others can be forced to do/think up other combos instead of the same one/two that does 70% of health, invalidating the reason to do any others besides very specific circumstances. Rev Blow honestly shouldn't even be in the game at all. It's really pointless, annoying, and only there because SNK wanted to have a Drive Impact equivalent. But as long as it's here, doing one should build up the Rev Meter by 35%. Doing a Rev Blow within 3 seconds of a previous one should be an instant-Overheat.

Anyway, it's a sequel to MotW with callbacks to early FF. But there's this theme of "outrunning the circle of time", getting out of vicious cycles of violence. So yeah the aesthetic is lighter/brighter.

You gotta look at it as a sequel to MotW. Mechanics-wise, it's an expansion of MotW.

Not just long combos, they gave everyone guard crush blockstrings that only a few characters could do reliably in MotW. So of course, they naturally added HD's to help defend against the mixing of long and short combos/blockstrings.

Yet as a modern game, they added scrub defense mechanics REV Guard and REV Blow to compensate when they had to nerf JD/GC and nerf invincible backdashes.

CoTW is genuinely a beautiful game but they really needed to play with the angles and lighting a bit more, make it look more dynamic to really take advantage of that comic-book style they were going for. COTW is clearly not a AAA title, but unlike KOF XV, all character were created from scratch. The animations are superior, the chi and aura effects are improved (surprisingly these look worse in KOF XV than in KOF XIV), and the stages and character models are visually better.

It's not that the game is kuso, CotW is actually pretty good, SNK always nails the gameplay. It's that CotW went the safe route by dumbing down the game in hopes of catching a large audience ala SF6 and thus lacks a strong niche that makes it stand out to other games around. Being a 25+ year sequel and SNK being obscure in the west doesn't help either.
Another note is that zoomzooms will swear left and right that graphics don't matter, but the most-selling games tend to have them, but also focus on them, that applies to fighting games too like MK1, Strive, T8 and SF6.
