KamuKoma (or reverse) is really weird. I enjoy it for that unique dynamic rather than as an extension of KomaHina and just lumped them together because there are so many different ways to interpret their relationship, Kamukura included or otherwise, even more so if you take DR3 into consideration. Yasuke's also weird because he shows up in DR3 for a split second which doesn't make sense in the timeline at all but let's disregard that; he definitely should have had more of a relationship with Hajime pre-op or Izuru post, platonic or otherwise, but there's sadly only a handful of illustrations that depict this. Yes, though I'd say the quality is on par with the English side. The real strength lies in fan comics and illustrations, honestly (see picrel), especially with how insane Komaeda tends to be drawn. I don't think fics in either language capture his madness as well as visual fanworks can. Oh, in terms of translation/localization quality for official DR media, Japanese blows English out of the water. The DR0 translation that's floating around in particular, though the games aren't the best either.

Localization isn't an inherent negative, DR just happened to suffer from incompetent localizers. One of the funnier examples is Imposter yelling "what's going on?" during the blackout (which is also a truth bullet, if I'm not mistaken) when the actual dialogue was "what are *you* doing?". I honestly view Localization as inherently negative by the virtue of changing the source material to fit western minds, it's almost always localized to strictly American audience rather than a general translation in the English language. VNs are known to have an ingame dictionary for the Japanese culture anyways, only for next gen VNs to ditch that entirely and not only write a bad translation, but worsen it by making unnecessary changes so the foreign mind can accept it. It's just... annoying. I wish I could learn proficient Japanese already, I've been stuck in the beginner stages for years.

I'm starting to understand. The fandom has always been like this, this is not a new thing. The only new things are the amount of fanfics produced and their quality in the writing aspect. Fics about them being good partners are not exactly rare, that's something that I've been seeing since the DR era. We've been in the midst of an awakening and revolution of DR for years now.

I think that is because of the change in how you consume these things. Most of these stories are written from the heart, and then published immediately, without having a big production team behind it, without an editor, and no proofreading at all. The fandom itself is divided in 2 groups: Professional faketoku and Amateur faketoku.

I can always tell the quality of a fanfiction based on whether the author knows how to make their original pairing, because if they do that I'm sure they'll have a better understanding of the characters and will write better, if they don't then they're incompetent. It's always a hit or miss.

Oh, I could go on about that pairing, that ship literally was made for the sake of the drama and abuse that they could achieve from a teenage romance. It's quite an interesting history for the ship I'd say.

I wish they had more time in DR2, I wonder how they could have developed both of their characters more in a third game had they had the time.

There are many DR2 characters I wish they could've had developed more, like Akane and Sakura, and to a lesser extent Kokichi and Gonta.

I can't say I disagree, it does seem like people have started to realize that the best and only possible DR2 ending was "Monokuma is a bitch and so are the masterminds, go away" and now any attempt at having any semblance of an actual ending or even just any hint of an ending is a big no-no.

I also hope that one day they will realize that the only way for the DR2 characters to be saved is if people start actually accepting the Monokuma ending instead of pretending like that never happened.

Yeah, exactly. That one weird line where the emphasis is unnatural. I remember Ibuki or maybe even Komaeda (it’s all a blur now) pointing it out in meta discussions. In Japanese, dropping the subject is so normal, so when someone includes it and emphasizes it, it’s important. But a translator not attuned to those nuances might butcher it into some random melodrama that wasn’t in the original. That’s how you end up with translation teams inventing intent where none existed.

I do not, unfortunately. A friend and I were working on more together but *waves hand* scheduling conflicts. On localization, I suppose it depends...there are some glaring examples of good and bad that come to mind: the amazing being Fire Emblem: Echoes and the awful being the entirety of the Kingdom Hearts series. A lot of games end up translated extremely literally (which doesn't work as Japanese tends to sound juvenile without added English fluff) or over-localized. The former is more common, and the case with SDR2. See:

I enjoy it a lot as well. However I find that the English translation lacks a lot of Kamukura's narrative nuances, particularly his perpetual lethargy/matter-of-fact speech. It ends up sounding very "This is this, this is this," despite the original tone being more contemplative and tired. I'm not sure how to explain this at all, even with the JP/EN text open right next to me. What I can say is that they should have at least put in effort to not translate line by line, which is what causes the dissonance due to the nature of JP/EN sentence structure differences.

From what I've seen, the majority of highly rated fanfictions lean lighthearted and feature a healthy relationship, hence why I've yet to come across any KomaHina fics that I enjoy.

For SDR2, I totally agree. The Kamukura boat scene suffers in English. The JP version feels introspective and weary, like he's carrying too much knowledge and too little meaning. In English, it becomes robotic. "This is this, that is that." No emotional layering, just info dump. You can tell it was translated line by line without adjusting for sentence flow or implied tone.

Japanese lets you be subtle. English demands more structure and intention in the delivery. Without adapting for that, you lose everything that makes Kamukura interesting.

Early 10s fanfics
I’d be happy to share some if you're curious. That era had some wild interpretations and strong emotional writing. Pre-DR3 fanfics really had to fill in the blanks, so the creativity was off the charts.

Hey, I already did... It's the same author I spoke about 5 times by now, her earlier stuff was kino but you (ahem) got filtered by the recent slop.
There's also a fanfiction called "Lion's den" which is just a 400k words novel in total of Komaeda Nagito psychological analysis (feat, him grooming Naegi Makoto) but I'm not sure if I would actually recommend it. It also was posted in the late 10s... Otherwise, I've ran out of fanfiction worth noting.

Your biggest problem really is not using the site well, it's like sorting by the trending page of any social media, the first most popular bunch will always be the most mainstream normie slop... You can sort by kudos while including any tags you'd like + specific relationship. In my experience, the ones with short tags and description are better than the bloated ones. You can skip a few pages to get to the rare gems.
