I'm not even opposed to a CE remaster. I think it would be entirely possible to make a quality remake that stays faithful to the style and gameplay of CE. You could even justify some tweaks for better cohesiveness with the wider series. But this remake has just taken the wrong approach at every step.

What this seems to be is a cheap way for MS to gauge the continued interest in the IP and what direction they should take things going forward.
If this flops, there is a non-zero chance that they pull a hard reset on the entire series and we get to be subject to a Halo where 343 had the freedom to build their own lore from the ground up. That nightmare timeline is a solid possibility at this point.

3 has some animation quirks, simple geometry, bad human faces, but its shaders and the light bloom effect do a lot of heavy lifting in making it seems a lot more modern than it really is. Same for ODST, both games punch above their weight thanks to good art design and shaders. Reach on the other hand desaturated itself to be more gritty while having more wear on textures, and it just kinda kickstarted the texturing issues that 4 would exacerbate to ludicrous degrees.
