Are AI teammates worth the hassle?
When they are "loose" and not under your control, it does add a certain je ne sais kino to a game. When they are directly under your command they are infuriating to deal with.
I used to enjoy trying to keep the loose ones alive in games when I was a kid, but they're always so janky.

I'm assuming you use the ship's position as the bullet's position before firing the bullet, then you want it to follow it's own trajectory after firing. Try adding an "is_fired" flag to the bullet script, set it to true after firing. Then you can say "if is_fired" and set the position accordingly in the code that's run every frame. So if it's not fired yet, it follows the ship, and if it is fired, it just travels on the Y-axis

Just set the bullet pos outside of the loop, the bullet should not know or care about what it was fired from, only its trajectory and whether or not it hits a collider.

There's a scam happening on the v3expo Discord server. A moderator is privately messaging users, promising a free year of Claude code and Comet Browser for game development. They get you to sign up for Comet Browser (earning them $3) and then ask you to log in with your Gmail account, claiming it's to sync your mobile data. This connects your Google account across devices, allowing them to steal your data. The Discord owner has blocked me when I tried to warn them.

if you don't want to fully niche down, at least pick a broad genre and from now on ask "what type of shooter to make" or "what type of strategy game to make" instead of "what game to make".

In addition to blowing pieces off like hands, arms, heads, you could also get different reactions from neck shots, nut shots etc.
For a shooting game, all you really need is good gunplay and good enemy reactions to being gunned.

it always shocks me how stuff that would have made millions 20 years ago now doesn't even make 100 bucks. it's like skill doesn't matter. technically you could say that everything is easy. the more it's figured out and the knowledge is available, the easier it becomes. it's only hard, when you don't know how to.
it's not about doing hard things, it's about knowing how to do something easy, before it is easy to others too. it's like, you have to be the only one it's easy for.
once you do it, others will analyze it, teach it and then it becomes easy for everybody.

I'm glad it's much easier to make and sell games now. I can make a *decent* looking game by myself and people don't immediately disregard it because it doesn't have AAA graphics and animations. People really don't appreciate this enough. Steam may take your 30% but before them you would have had to have a publisher which would have taken much much more of your pie than 30% and that's not including the price to make a physical copy and getting stores to even stock your stupid game and hoping someone would rent or buy it so you're effectively hoping your publisher put out reviews in physical magazines. Life is much easier now. More games, more market, more money.

How bad is 3d A* for a limited environment?
Lets assume I have a 3d space ship built with connected voxel-like modules, should I store connected neighbours inside this modules for faster navigation but larger memory consumption or just search them in every direction like in even A* 2d grid?

As far as I'm aware A* is one of the best algorithms to use for both 2D and 3D environments. Depending on what you're using those there might be a default implementation of it in Nav Meshes or such, which would save you the effort of implementing something yourself.

Do you want things to move from module to module? I'd say get something working first, and then worry about things like memory consumption afterwards. Optimizing early just delays having working code.

The problem today isn't how fast games are progressing on the top end but rather the lower end. So many people pouring into gamedev that the odds of talented people showing up and just stamping out the competition is inevitable. Now we are basically in a race against all other indie gamedevs to reach triple A skill level while the bar for gamers, at least for palatable indie tier, is whatever those near the top are at.

Many successfully indie games like Undertale and Dungeons of Fear and Hunger are coded like crap. Looks fine in my opinion but there's several things wrong with them:
1. scale is incorrect for the sword, relative to the heart. it's smaller than the heart
2. bland, not alot of detail also small pixel size which prohibits adding detail
3. background not interesting, it's just static
4. general presentation is not interesting.
take a look at famous game GUIs, you'll see they do alot of crazy effects and have alot of feedback.
Also those games incorporate their personality into the gui, your game doesn't have one yet since it looks like it's in early stages.

In any case, the icons look functionality fine, they just aren't as nice as the rest of the pixel art because they're entirely flat. You could make them look better by giving them more depth and detail. Alternately, decide on a theme that fits and make them follow that theme, for instance the buttons kind of look like stone so why not lean into that and make the texture even more stone-like and the icons etched in stone?

Also maybe play around with the colors if you're still going to have color. For instance there's a lot of yellow in the initial icons, using a variety of colors might be better. Likewise for the heart icon red or pink is a more common heart color, and for the star yellow is a more common star color than blue, and for the pyramid maybe give it an iris color like blue so it looks more like an eye in the middle? And for the swords something iron or steel like might look better than brown and yellow.

That's just what came to mind, but overall it all looks functional. I'd worry more about getting everything you want working first, and then you can optimize the look and feel of things at the end.
