This development is pretty much forced by the direction they took with the meta. "Allies within 2 spaces" just doesn't cut it when the enemies are equipped with some absurd range courtesy of Celica or Sigurd or whatever and you also cannot dare to stay within that range, lest you get oneshot on EP. So on PP you need to have the ability to venture deep into enemy range and then jump all the way outside again. Any skill that only provides benefits on the condition that the unit has allies within 2 spaces (or worse: right next to it) might as well not exist, it's a dead slot. Skill range needs to match enemy range and the latter is potentially infinite.

Odd that Sharena mentions that Hodr's gun looks similar to the breidablik, but it isn't really relevant yet. perhaps it will come up in the final chapters, but that wouldn't make sense as the game constantly mentions that Askr made it and that Kiran is outside of Alfador's design.

Depends on what you want out of it. Do you want to read the story and collect your favorite units? Then yeah, go for it, nothing will prevent you from doing that. Hell, you may even have an easier time of it than veterans in some regards, given that you get to start off with 8 years of story rewards.
Do you want to get top rewards in the PVP game modes? That will be quite a bit harder for some (Aether raids), but still reasonably attainable for others (arena)
The thing is that powercreep is so advanced right now that units older than a year old are gonna be ass no matter what, so only starting now really isn't that big of a deal in terms of unit strength.
Your biggest deficiency by far will be lack of dragonflowers, which are a resource needed to increase stats on units, and is vitally important to keeping older units up to scratch. Even so, so long as you are using mostly new units anyways, it won't do too much damage.

FEH is still active enough to reliably match you with opponents in under 1 minute for summoner duels. But trying to keep up with the meta is a fool's errand and summoner duels in particular is ruled by sweaty paypigs with an iron fist. We're talking about demented whales who'll spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars a month to get all the latest powercreep at +10 and basically the whole monetization structure of the game is built around them. Like all gachas, FEH is an inherently unfair game because the underlying business model won't allow it any other way. In the distant past there was a short moment in time when FEH was actually kinda generous and lenient towards poorfags and minnows. But with the benefit of hindsight we now know IS just bumbled into that golden age on accident.

they can't use any real movement skills, so lyn, celica, or sigurd ring are pretty much necessary. if you're slow, eirika ring is mandatory or you'll get NFU'd, so you need allies shuttling you to the front lines instead
in terms of combat, ranged armors are squishier than melees so acting as a save will likely just get you killed these days, unlike they used to be able to do it, so i wouldn't recommend that
wily/slick/assault/counter fighter are all a major difference in viability. A and C there's not really anything special so go with whatever build you want there. echo skills are pretty fucked

I know CYL is around the corner, but we'll already kinda know what they're all about, right? FEH doesn't like to deviate much from established roles (every Micaiah has dual effectiveness and penalties to inflict, every Corrin is a dragon, that kinda thing)
Byleth will likely just wear the Sothis garb, have some sort of The Ruptured Sky that deals extra damage to Beasts and Dragons while also giving him DR, deer dude will extend stat boosts by +3 so that it goes up to +9 or +10, Baldr's gonna have DR out the ass
Sharena is a bit of an exception but even then, there's either her Bridal version or even her brother's CYL version to take inspiration from (so extra turns and/or Great Talent respectively)

It was during a hectic moment in my life where I just moved and then I'd gotten ill. I was too sick to do dailies so I dropped it and powercreep has already worn me down before then. Between being busy with other stuff and actually playing other games for a change, I never thought to pick it up again until I saw that there's a new banner with someone I like so I returned for a short while. IIRC thresholds like that can vary a little bit, but at the very least they probably would have realized it would be better to remove 1 hp just so she can have a functioning PRF, even if they didn't put that 1 stat somewhere else. they would have had better ways to fix it if they had realized and it would have made her look more appealing to any whale looking to fully invest, but they didn't.
